Why it isnât Starlordâs fault
Okay, I need to make a post about this because it's so fucking frustrating. And it's honestly ridiculous that like I have to make this post.
First of all, you guys need to have a little bit more sympathy. Peter Quill had to watch his mother die when he was a child, he was scared and traumatized. And then is left alone by his family, so he runs outside where he is IMMEDIATELY KIDNAPPED by people who look like they want to hurt him. This is Yondu's crew were talking about. And we know Yondu made jokes about it from gotg2. Then in gotg2 he finds his real dad, then finds out his dad killed his mom (and that his dad never really loved his mom etc), so he has to kill his dad 1) for revenge and 2) because if he doesn't, Ego will kill him and all his friends. After that he has to watch his father figure die in his arms as he realizes that he's had a dad all along. And has to deal with the guilt from that, insert sad speech from Yondu's funeral. At this point he's lost a lot and has been through a lot of emotional stuff. We know that he has emotional outbursts from both Gotg movies, so it's not that surprising that he freaked out in IW. Now, about IW, he just lost the love of his life after being through all that, so ya he's gonna freak out, BECAUSE HE'S A HUMAN BEING WITH EMOTIONS. Literally everybody in that position would do the same thing don't @ me. And if he didn't react, y'all would still be hating on him like: wHy DiDnT hE rEaCt DiDnT hE lOvE gAmOrA 1!??1?!? It's exactly what people are doing about Steve's so called "non reaction" to Bucky.
Ok so that aside, there is legitimate reasoning to not blame Quill even if you have an inability to feel empathetic for him. And it lies in the final act of the film and has everything to do with Dr. Strange.
When they end up on Titan and are developing a plan to beat Thanos, Dr. Strange sees what? like billions of possible outcomes of their fight. And out of ALL of them, they only win 1. This is at the beginning of being on Titan, that Dr. Strange knows exactly what is going to happen/needs to happen in order for them to beat Thanos in the end. Right before Strange dissolves away, he says to Tony âit was the only wayâ, meaning that there, again, is only one timeline where they ultimately win, but that Dr. Strange was successful in making that happen. Everything that happened on Titan and in Wakanda after Strange saw the ultimate futures, was what was SUPPOSED to happen in order for them to win in the end. Dr. Strange knew after seeing the future, that the only way they would ultimately win, would be by him giving Thanos the time stone and them temporarily losing. Thatâs why he gave it up in exchange for Tonyâs life, it wasnât just for Tony, because right before, when they met, Strange said how if it came down to it, he wouldnât hesitate to let either of them die, in order to protect the time stone. Strange didnât get THAT attached to Tony, in that amount of time, there was other motivation in saving his life: Tony is the one who will save them all.Â
Going back to Quill, it didnât matter what he did in that moment because they were never going to get the gauntlet off. Strange knew that, the gauntlet plan was a distraction for tony, peter, and the guardians. Theyâre superheroes, theyâre not going to just give up, so Strange didnât tell anybody. Not that they would trust him anyway. Had he told them they would have been like âbullshitâ and got sucked into the âthereâs gotta be another wayâ which would fuck everything up. Again, the ONE timeline where they win is the one where Strange doesnât tell them.
The ONE timeline required them giving up the time stone, so in whatever alternate timeline where they somehow got the gauntlet off, they still lost somewhere down the line. So, Quillâs âfuck-upâ was actually extremely important and critical for everything to go according to plan. And if getting the gauntlet off was what would help them, donât you think Dr. Strange would have teleported his ass somewhere else?? Strange didnât stop Quill because it NEEDED TO HAPPEN IN ORDER FOR THEM TO ULTIMATELY WIN. Even if there was a version where Quill didnât react physically like he did in this one, it didnât matter because it wasnât the timeline in which they won.Â
You can go through the whole movie and create a tally of all the times the characters fucked up and could have prevented the snap, here are a few:
- Wanda and Cap refusing to kill vision at the beginning. Had they killed him then, it would have been much more difficult for Thanos to get the mind stone
-Dr. Strange refusing to leave the fight with Ebony Maw when Tony told him to. Had he left then, Tony, Peter, and Strange would have never ended up on Titan and they would have been able to protect the time stone for longer.
-Gamora trying to beat Thanos to Knowhere and not going right. Had she not tried beating Thanos they would have never ended up in that situation and he wouldnât have taken Gamora. Had she gone right, the circumstances would have been different as well.Â
-Thor going for the head instead of the chest (this one is similar to the Quill situation since it takes place after Strange sees the ultimate futures, so I donât really count this one).Â
*Important to note: the âone timelineâ thing only applies to the events that occur after Strange sees the future, because they are based on what has happened so far, and an inability to fix past fuck ups made by the characters. But, Iâm assuming that the timelines in which Strange used the stone to go back in time and fix those mistakes, didnât help in ultimately beating Thanos...
You can blame the Avengers or the Guardians all you want, I just find it ironic that the one character who is actually to blame, isnât being blamed at all. Infinity War. Is. Thanosâ. Fault. THANOS. The literal villain of the fuckiiiinnnggg movie is to blame.Â
