Let me just take a moment to talk about one of my favourite moments in this drama so far. Because I loved it so much I watched it 3 times.

I love how Eugene’s nationality plays a huge factor in their lives - not only for the sake of separation angst, but also in terms of literal protection. 

In earlier episodes Eugene told Ae Sin, because he’s an American soldier, in certain situations there is no place safer for her than beside him; when Mori assumed Eugene had chosen to be a Joseon man - Eugene emphasised the fact that he was American 

and it comes back to his conversation with Dong Mae, when Dong Mae asked if he was willing to give up everything for Ae Sin and he responded that he would never risk losing everything - as his identity as an American soldier is his best option in terms of protecting Ae Sin.

And so, when being chased down by Japanese swordsmen, Eugene decides to “attack” the American legation in Japan, causing them to send out their own gunmen and then saying wait don’t shoot me, I’m an American 

and its fantastic, because the Japanese can’t touch him whilst he’s at the legation - and they can’t stop him when he’s surrounded by his own country’s men, his fellow soldiers who are ready to shoot.
