The Judgement

The 3 crimes of Georg Bendemann:

1. Disgraced the memory of his mother. 2. Betrayed his friend. 3. Tied his father up in bed, so that he could not move. “But tell me now, can he move or can’t he?”

The Judgement is a betrayal of biblical proportions and marks the second work in the Kafka trilogy by The Second Cousins (META 2014, Malthouse Helium Season). Oscillating between banal domesticity and nightmarish horrors, this new work examines how we simultaneously realize and imprison ourselves through the lens of the omniscient, omnipresent Father.

The Collected Works of Victor Bergman

‘I never want to see you again.

Once upon a time in Romania, Aaron Orzech and his girlfriend met a strange and powerful man named Victor Bergman. The next day, he married them in the village of Voroneț. By the third day, he was gone, but for days and weeks and months afterwards he haunted Aaron’s life.

Performed by Brian Lipson and Aaron Orzech, The Collected works of Victor Bergman is the debut work by The Family. It begins with Aaron’s real life encounter and tumbles into a nightmare world of paranoid fantasy. Integrating stories, photographs, and interviews, the work explores the intrusion of a stranger into a person’s psyche.

The Family is a new theatre company created by Aaron Orzech and Romanie Harper. This show is conceived by Aaron Orzech, Romanie Harper, Zoey Dawson, James Paul, Katie Sfetkidis and Brian Lipson.

It is a keyhole look into Hell – were Hell a forgotten art deco hotel

Based at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, electroacoustic ensemble the West Australian Laptop Orchestra (WALO) brings innovative new works to the forefront of the live music scene. For their 2014 program, Music Director (and proud CutCommon contributor) Sam Gillies has commissioned works from a diverse range of young Australian composers, one being James Paul. The young Melbourne composer’s ‘Thirteen Minutes on Floor 23′ fuses sound design and electronic performance into a “hellish, organic sound world of death, decay and well-dressed cats,” according to Sam. James chats with us about the work and explains what makes good electronic music.

V: Five Rooms (Part I) PRCZ-3

PRCZ-3 is the first room, there are five in total.

In this room there is watching, and waiting. 

In this room there is nothing to see.

Works comprising the V series are not open in a traditional sense; instead there is an invitation to participate through limited observation. Each work presents its audience with one of the following roles: 

an outsider, a view from beyond the work; a subject, viewing themselves within the work; or a component of the work, viewing the work from within. 

The viewer, in this instance, is invited to observe from outside the gallery.

If you’re unfamiliar with his work, the best place to start is Peter Greenaway’s documentary Four American Composers: Robert Ashley (1983). His most well-known video work is Perfect Lives (1978-83), a television opera in seven parts. He interviewed composers such as Terry Riley, Philip Glass, Alvin Lucier, Pauline Oliveros, David Behrman, and Gordon Mumma in his epic video series, Music With Roots in the Aether, where interviews are followed by performances. He will be missed.

Audiokinetic Jukebox: Program 2 at White Night Festival 2014

RMIT University's Audiokinetic Experiments lab presents Darrin Verhagen's Audiokinetic Jukebox: Program 2, an installation at NGV Australia for White Night Festival 2014.

The Audiokinetic Jukebox is a single participant, immersive artwork integrating sound, movement, vibration and light into a multisensory aesthetic experience, developed by Darrin Verhagen at RMIT’s Audiokinetic Experiments (AkE) Lab.

The project repurposes a motion simulator which tilts a chair on an x-y axis. At its base is a transducer which delivers additional levels of fine vibration. The audience member sits in the chair, in headphones, eyes closed, with abstract visuals (driven by the music) projected directly into their faces. The end result is powerfully immersive, dynamic and stimulating.

The curated works in Program Two range from hypnotic drone through to cinematic sound design, from Noise to K-pop. Darrin Verhagen’s two pieces of Power Electronics transform the abstract assault of an extreme genre into the visceral exhilaration of vehicular travel. Robin Fox’s sinusoidal ambience and intense colourfields explore the theories that light can stimulate the pineal gland into producing DMT. Adam Hunt homages Nine Inch Nails with industrial pop which oscillates between gentle threat and gleeful violence. And James Paul blasts pop music, crafts science fiction and replaces the senses with raw stimuli.

Award-winning director Daniel Schlusser brings us his most ambitious production to date – an original work inspired by the life of Mikhail Bulgakov, his sensuous, satirical masterpiece of love and madness, The Master and Margarita, and the darkly theatrical politics of contemporary Russia.

Satan has arrived downtown. People are disappearing; men are turning into flying pigs. A young woman is ready to sell her soul to save her lover. The wicked are spared, and the good are going mad. In the hands of Melbourne’s own Daniel Schlusser Ensemble, Bulgakov’s anarchic vision collides with the trial of art activists Pussy Riot, and sees religion, atheism and the politics of post-capitalism combust in a frenzy of dramatic defiance.
