4/32 In Search of Duende by Frederico García Lorca When I am lost or really am just quarreling with the journey, I return here and let myself wrestle, to do battle, to overcome. Battered, bruised, wild with feeling. On the edge of the knife. “On the rim of the well.” (at Otherlands Coffee Bar)

Writing requires a leap of faith, and when it’s going well, there’s a superstitious fear that the computer will eat my latest draft or that I won’t be able to finish as strongly as I’ve begun. When it’s going badly, there’s a temptation to abandon the project. When I lose faith in my talent, I trust in my slow-and-steady work ethic. Playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis has a simple, unforgettable rule: keep your butt in the chair. Nobody stays there for eight hours, but we do have to get there.
