My second lockdown project. This sets to music some beautiful words that describe a highveld roadtrip. I hope this scenery relieves some of the lockdown monotany for you as it has done for me.

This is a first lockdown project; for your entertainment.
I miss choir during this lockdown period. This is one of our songs, composed by our conductor Pieter Bezuidenhout, set to a poem by Antjie Krog. It contains some prescient lines like:
"Stay with me... when the underbelly of earth is torn open."

This is an afrikaans translation of Bob Dylan’s “Not dark yet”, with some help from Koos Du Plessis. My farther keeps himself busy during his commute by translating Bob songs. This is his best translation yet, so I decided to record it. Listen on your favorite platform gate.fm/jQ0Q3ZO2q
Ek was oud in London en in Parys soos 'n kind. Elke senu in my lyf is so verdoof en leeg. Dit waarvan ek wou wegvlug, het ek lankal vergeet. Ek hoor nie eers meer 'n fluister aan die Heer nie. Dis nog nie nag nie, maar dis nie meer lank nie.
This was a soundtrack for a silent movie called Loonacy. This project was particularly challenging, because there could be no periods of silence and the music had to play a diegetic role.
There are two main characters, each with their own leitmotif. These two melodies are on the same pentatonic scale. I tried to make the melodies agnostic to the underlying key, and squeezed out three or four different such contexts with the exact same notes in the melody. There melodies were also designed to be a duet when played together.
This short song features a granular synth based on the idling of a broken engine, and uses an ignition sound to produce a ‘jig’ effect.
It was meant for a 4x4 add in 2016. It ended up a bit too heavy to be used.
These songs are from a score I made for the 2016 silwerskerm film: 'n Liefdeslobotomie. I particularly enjoyed making the synth at the beginning of Lalie. It progressively filters out tone from noise, as a metaphor for the lead’s mind becoming clear as he falls in love.
This song pays homage to the mother of all mulberry trees, which was cut down owing to the fact that it made too much of a mess.
This is part of the score I made with Ferdinand Schenck (@kleios) for a silwer skerm fees movie called "Koebaaiklub" in 2012. I was trying to channel the Wall-e soundtrack and played with tempo changes. There are many sharp fours and dissonant notes. The second song is a fun afrikaans song parody.
This is a fun song I made to play with the constraints of only being able to play one note at a time. It was used in Adam Heyns’ entry for the MyBBB competition and it ended up in the top thirty.
Vir ewig in ewewig
I helped produce this song. I'm responsible for the beats and electronics. It has some really interesting chord progressions. Song by Willemien Heyns and Ronald N Davey. Recorded, Mixed and mastered by Douw Steyn.
Check out her Facebook group http://www.facebook.com/Willemien.en?fref=ts I hope to do some more collaborations with her in the future. I'll keep you posted.
I made the jingle for this. Look it's Malcolm Gladwell.

Bare Short Film
Here are some songs I did for students at the Pretoria University of Technology a couple of years ago. It's a dark movie with dark subject matter. The music should reflect this. I had fun playing around with modes. Particularly Lydian. The music was not used in the end, but I want to put it here because it is has a different feel than what I normally do.
Louwrens Ferreira and I made a score for a supercool movie called "Like My Profile". It will be showing in cinemas from 22-24 September 2012 in Numetro cinemas throughout South Africa.
The idea with the music was to set the tone for an internet thriller. The sound ended up being very digital, where the original idea was to have a conversation between the digital and real world. However, I think this works because the music becomes the "voice" of the digital world.
The film is a thriller. I thought that it would be an interesting idea to try dubstep for the more intense scenes. It's slow and it's predictable. This sets up a clear expectation, which you can satisfy (as in the title track) or defy (I tried a 5/4time dubstep at some point). What is also interesting from a timing perspective, is that accept for the 1 and 3 beats you can pretty much do anything, without losing continuity. It can bring an interesting flow to the edit. This helps to signify a break in time or reality of the character, without being unpalatable.
This is the trailer:
This is the first song I've posted in a while. I have been sitting on this and a couple more songs for quite some time. I here vow that I will finish and post a song every week for the next couple of weeks; how's that for a deadline. This creative spurt was launched when I decided to make some music for myself, so it might not be that palatable. But I would still like to hear any comments or suggestions. If any one would like to mix, remix or make a video for any of the songs, please contact me.
Here I tried to explore the "post dubstep" genre. Ja, I know it sounds lame, but it's a thing. It's a more chilled out kind of dubstep, like the "eyes on fire" remix. Thanks for Carel Kleynhans for the music and the idea. (Your welcome to the project files if you want to try something) The original was sang by Stellenbosch University Choir.
I think that has all the basses covered, enjoy...
Ek het my kar bestuur in hierdie video. Dit is baie mooi.
I'm trying out SoundCloud to host my music. This is a sample track that was intended for a dance play. The basic idea was to make a steam punk song. So I mixed machine sounds, classical music (Berlioz symphony fantastique), and some modern dance elements. Music by Jamie Wannenburg and Louwrens Ferreira featuring Pieter Bezuidenhoud on the hopsichord.
