James slips an arm around her waist, drags her onto the same step as him. Lily feels her breath catch in her throat and thinks about kissing him, wants to close the space between them so badly it aches. Heâd touched her hip to steady her when she fell into him outside the store but this is different, deliberate, and Lily finds that she really, really likes it.
He asks about Petunia and she has to think about it for a second, which sheâs pretty sure makes her an awful fucking sister. âPetunia is seven years older than me,â she says slowly, then nods. âShe just got married last year. Itâs weird. I donât really like her husband.â She slaps a hand over her mouth and laughs, widening her eyes. âOh my God, please forget I said that. Iâm a horrible person. Do you have siblings?â she asks, switching gears as well as she can.
James seems somewhat amused by her, which makes her skin tingle; she isnât sure if itâs a good or a bad thing, but he keeps smiling at her and it makes her feel like sheâs floating, so as long as he doesnât stop smiling, sheâll take it as a good sign. Lily takes a sip of her water and then furrows her brow, looking over the menu. âHonestly, I would die for mozzarella sticks all day every day, but if thatâs not your thing, then thatâs cool. Iâd gladly take a milkshake and a veggie burger instead.â She looks up at him and smiles, nudging her foot against his under the table. âDo you want to do the game thing? Or can I be really selfish and keep  you all to myself for the night?â
James couldn't imagine having a sibling that much older â it would be so weird, like having more of a live-in uncle or aunt than a sibling. But then again, he's not quite sure what growing up with siblings would have been like. "I'm sure you're not a terrible sister," he says. "I mean, what, you're allowed to think someone is kind of an ass or whatever."
She asks if he has any siblings himself and he can't even filter himself before he finds himself saying, "Three brothers." He sees the expression change on her face and he back peddles. "Kind of. I live with my best friends â they're better than any brothers I could have ever asked for and I didn't even have to share my bedroom with them." He smiles, feeling sheepish.
"Mozzarella sticks sounds great," he says with a smile. "Although, I'm not gonna lie â I could probably pack away a whole plate myself, so we'll order two and we can divvy up the leftovers later?" He does note that she says veggie burger. So she's a vegetarian. But not vegan because they're getting mozzarella. He wonders why.Â
She knocks her ankle against his and he's glad he's already smiling or else he might've looked like a big idiot for smiling at that out of nowhere. "To be honest," he says shyly, "I have latent game restaurant trauma for several bad Chuckie Cheese birthday parties, so if we could stay away from the game room, I would be eternally grateful."Â

Lily canât help but hop onto the escalator, turning to face him when sheâs standing a step above him. âIâm good,â she says with a wide smile. âBetter now that Iâm closer to your height.â She laughs and twists their hands so she can intertwine their fingers, squeezing as they ride up to the fourth floor where the restaurant is. She hopes the lack of traffic in the mall doesnât mean that everyone is at Dave and Busterâs â she wants him all to herself, for a little it, and doesnât want to have to share with even the awful crowds of middle schoolers who like to hit the arcade on the weekends.
"Do you come here often? I havenât been in ages," she says, waiting for him to step off the escalator before she starts walking toward the restaurant. "I think the last time was with my sister, actually, before she went to England for her semester abroad. That was three or four years ago." Lily finds herself leaning into him as they walk, the movement unconscious. She hopes he doesnât mind.
They ask the hostess for a booth in the dining room, because Lily knows it will be quieter, and she flips through her menu even as she asks the waiter for a glass of water to start. Once heâs gone, she looks at her date (her date!) over the edge of her menu and smiles. âAlright. Are you an appetizer man, or do you prefer to save yourself for the main course?â
Lily practically skips up to the step above him, the extra six inches bringing her to eye level. He laughs, raising an eyebrow and thinks about kissing her. He grins, a bit wicked, and slips an arm around her waist, moves her so that they're on the same step. "Uh-huh," he says, feeling sly and flirty. "About that."
She does this thing, James is noticing, where she'll ask questions but keep on talking after them. It's kind of cute, the way her mouth and brain seem to keep running on. "Uh, not a lot," he says. Dave and Buster's is kind of a horrible reminder of bad Chuckie Cheese birthday parties that James would rather forget (he wasn't very popular in elementary school or middle school â he was gangly and had thick glasses and unruly hair). "You have a sister?" he asks. "How much older is she?"
Lily asks for a booth in the dining room, which makes James's stomach flip. He assumes the fact that she wants to be as alone with him as possible, that it's a good sign. She asks for a glass of water. He does the same, feeling a bit uneasy (nervous). He practically chokes at her question and its innuendo. "Um." He wishes this was a game show. He would call Remus and ask what to do next. "What do you like?" he asks, feeling pretty proud of himself for navigating his way out of that.Â

The lights in the mall have all dimmed or been turned off by the time the Hot Topic TVs go off. Lily glances up from her phone and canât help but smile when she sees James walk out, trailed by Sirius carrying a skateboard. The latter drops his board to the floor and skates off toward the escalators, telling James heâll see him at home. Lily arches an eyebrow, but figures she can ask about that later. (After all, she and Ted work together and donât have any issues at all.)
James smiles as he walks up to her, lining up the tips of his toes with hers. Lily tilts her head back to meet his gaze and returns the smile. âWhy, thank you, monsieur,â she says, taking his offered hand and pulling herself up. It sort of dumps her into him, for a second, and she feels little shocks of electricity go through her body at every point where theyâre touching. Lily doesnât let go of his hand even as she takes a step back to put some distance between them. She feels like sheâs shaking and hopes it isnât obvious, because sheâs nervous enough without him catching onto just how nervous she is.
"Hi," she says, swinging their hands a little. She canât stop smiling, but she tries anyway. "How are you?" she asks, and then, "Shall we?" without pausing to hear his answer. Lily walks with him toward the food court, relaxing a bit more with every step. Her stomach is in knots but sheâs also really, really content to be here with him like this, so she figures thatâs probably a good sign.
He smiles at her when she practically falls into him. His other hand curves around her hip, steadying them. James laughs. "Sorry," he murmurs as she pulls away. Lily doesn't let go of his hand, through. She swings their hands and he feels â happy, he'd say giddy but that's not right.Â
They start walking to the food court â it's not a long walk, so they're really walking to the escalators to the fourth floor than to the food court. "I'm good," he says, smiling at her. Now that they're walking together, he realizes just how little she is. "Really good." He can't help but feel nervous, he doesn't want to mess this up. (He also might be freaking out a little bit about how she's seventeen and what if she doesn't like him.)
They cross the food court, arriving at the escalators. "How are you?"

Lily wanders around the mall for the last half hour or so that itâs open, dropping into Nordstrom to say hello to Andy and tell her she officially has a date. She tries valiantly not to squeal or do anything stupid, because Lily is more dignified than that. She lets her friend go after just a few minutes, knowing how much of a pain in the ass it is to close on a Friday night, and then wanders back through the mall again.
For a Friday, itâs not that busy. That isnât to say that there arenât swarms of people all over the place, though, and the food court is a mess when she walks past. Lily stops off in the bathroom to freshen up her makeup and brush her hair, feeling stupidly nervous when itâs finally time for her to start trekking back to Hot Topic.
She sits against the railing opposite the entrance and plays a game on her phone, distracted enough that she somehow manages to get to 2048 without even really trying. She screenshots it and sends it to Ted with a tongue-face emoji, then opens a different app and plays around in it while she waits for James to emerge.
They have to leave the TVs on when they leave, which James always thinks is a huge waste of money and electricity and on nights he knows he's opening, he turns them off because fuck that. (He's not going to lose his job over those TVs â if he loses his job it'll be because Sirius did something stupid and Al blamed him for it.) He resists bouncing out the doors as they lock up because he has a date (with Lily!!). He waves goodbye to Sirius, who gives him an eyebrow waggle. Sirius drops his board on the ground and illegally skates down the hallway to the stairs, showing he'll see James at home later.
He smiles and walks up to Lily, presses his the tips of his toes against hers. "Hey down there," he says, unable to keep from beaming. He offers her his hand. "Need some help?"
(His stomach is doing backflips and he feels like he's fourteen again. Which is strange, but stranger still that this feels okay.)

Lilyâs eyes widen and she nods. âOh. We get a handful of those at Newbury, but not often. We donât carry a lot of Supernatural merch anymore.â She laughs then and ducks her head.
To her surprise, James doesnât drop her hand or tell her he canât go out with her or ask her to leave. She looks up at him, tentative, and finds herself squeezing his hand without thinking too much about it. âOkay,â she says softly. âIâll invite someone else on my murdering sprees.â Heâs so cute. He ducks his head just the slightest bit and smiles at her, shy and a little awkward. Lily wants to kiss him.Â
A large group of people pour into the store then and Lily turns at the same time James does, her customer service inclinations taking over even though sheâs not even at her own store. She sighs and drops his hand, looking at him with a soft, slow smile. âIâll come back at nine and wait for you to close up?â She bites her lip, unsure. Lily doesnât want to pressure him into anything.
I'll invite someone else on my murdering sprees, she says with a smile. He drags his thumb over her knuckle and laughs. "Thanks," James says, grinning. "I don't want to lose my scholarship, so no arrests is probably good." A ton of people stampede the store and James and Lily's hands drop. She says that she'll come back. He believes her.
"Okay," he says with a smile. James watches as Sirius practically bounces from person to person, sees people start to make their way to the till. "I should rescue him," James says finally. "But I'll see you tonight?" he asks with a smile.

Lily shrugs in turn, stepping a little closer. âI donât need love looking like diamonds,â she sings quietly, trailing off into a laugh. As stupid as it sounds, sheâs sort of lost track of every other sound around them. Thereâs just them and their hands and the shrinking space between them and itâs nice, even if her heart feels like itâs going to beat right out of her ribcage and escape through her throat.
"Not a Lannister shipper?" she asks lightly. "How ever will I sleep at night?" The look she gives him is positively evil and she knows it, smirking around the words even as she turns her hand, pressing their palms together and sliding her fingers between his. Lily frowns then, biting at her lip. âUm â seventeen?â His eyes widen a little and she sighs. âI turn eighteen in January and Iâm this close to a full ride to Brown,â she says, pinching the fingers of her free hand together. âIâm not a baby. Please donât freak out.â
James wishes he was talked to about the Lannisters all day. He shakes his head, laughing. "Not quite," he says, "Try Winchester brothers. Not nearly as fun or easy to derail the conversation from." (He is very afraid of the "wincest shippers".)
She presses their palms together and presses her fingers between his. He smiles a little, but falters when she frowns. She hasn't let go of his hand.Â
But then there it is. She's seventeen. Which isn't really that bad. He was seventeen, it's two years' difference. And she's turning eighteen soon. "Oh," is all he says. Because while that's all well and good she's not legal and, well. James really does not feel like getting arrested, thank you.Â
Please don't freak out. He's not freaking out. He's not. "Okay," he says, thinking for a minute. "I'm nineteen, so I will save the freaking out for if I get arrested?" He's careful, making sure she doesn't look like she's freaking out before he smiles, shy. "So don't get me arrested?"
