Corsica is rightly famous for its sandy beaches and for the purity of its coastal waters, but there are also some wonderful rivers where you can enjoy a swim. In the Massif de Bavella, there are natural swimming pools and basins where it is a real pleasure to take a dip when the temperatures are at their peak.

One magnificent example of such a place is La Purcaraccia, a stream that runs through the commune of Quenza. From the Col de Bavella, you head out on the D268 towards Solenzara, and just after the Col de Larone you will find a roadside car park.

A path bends around through the maquis scrubland of the Purcaraccia valley and leads you to the stream after about a 40min stroll. Cross this stream and then climb up towards a giant rock, pitted with small holes known as « Tafoni «. Just beyond this point, you will reach the first of the pools and the path will now rise sharply towards the summit, where you begin to discover yet more pools and the first of the slides. In total, the trail is about 2km long and rises 260 m.

The Plus: In the midst of the giant granite boulders that are baked by the sun, you will find numerous pools nestled in the rock. These pools are the perfect places to relax and, if you are brave enough, to enjoy a swim. The waters may be cold (14°C), but they are crystal clear and well worth braving. At the summit you will be treated to beautiful views of the grandiose Bavella Needles.
