Prince hair and prince kit HELLO!
an misogynist abuser beats moutet on grass and he gets "biggest what-if in tennis" shouts from his incel fans AND journalists meanwhile GS champions on the WTA get called overrated frauds in a weak era on the regular

What shocks me besides the misogyny people have been throwing at Iga since Maja’s run is also how eager they seem to discard her. Imagine the best player of the decade representing your country and doing it with so much pride and care and all you have for her is contempt and disrespect. Like we’re talking about someone who went around behind the scenes at this year’s Australian Open and told everybody who would listen how joyful and proud she was that Poland finally won the United Cup. And instead of being happy that there’s now two amazing and wonderful players being so successful it’s like half the country is out to downgrade Iga and crown Maja as their new favourite thing. Idk it’s just so sad to see them being pitted against each other like this and have people use Maja’s success as a reason to shit on Iga, especially considering their shared history.
iga is being held to a uniquely punishing standard. we’re talking about a six-time grand slam champion and world no. 1 for 125 weeks getting dragged while her own childhood friend’s extraordinary underdog run is being used as a stick to beat her with.
what makes it especially uncomfortable to watch is that polish media has spent years struggling with how to frame a woman who doesn’t fit its preferred mould of femininity. iga has been criticised for being too serious, too guarded, too awkward, too intense, too emotional, and sometimes not emotional enough. after a while, people start treating her reserve as a personality defect rather than what it actually is: a completely rational response to being repeatedly burned by the same media ecosystem.
the joy around maja is real and deserved. her run was beautiful. but maja’s success should be a celebration of maja. instead, parts of the conversation have immediately become about what she supposedly has that iga doesn’t.
iga has given everything to polish tennis. she put poland on the tennis map in a way no player before her managed. for years she carried expectations, scrutiny, and national pride on her shoulders. and yet the moment someone more accessible, more naturally open with the media, and frankly easier for people to project onto comes along, a portion of her own country seems ready to trade her in.
there is truly nothing worse than a player’s own country’s media. the rest of the world tends to judge you by what you’ve achieved. media at home often judges you by how closely you’ve matched the version of you they imagined.
