Crape Myrtles are an Asian shrub, but are a familiar sight in our warm, humid Summers. Their blossoms add welcome color to outdoor surroundings while the buzzing of cicadas rises and falls all around.

A few days of milder weather has allowed for actually enjoying the outdoors. Yesterday I noticed this guy fishing in an unusual spot, taking advantage of the low water level in the river. Behind him are old railroad bridge pilings and the more modern Manchester Bridge.

Kawase Hasui

The art of Japanese woodblock prints continued into the 20th century. In this beautiful landscape, Hasui allows us to sense the energy of the waves splashing up against dark, volcanic-looking rocks that form a dominant, irregular curve through the image. Overhead are bright mackerel clouds, a sign of fair weather. In the background, a fishing boat is surrounded by the hazy open water, in contrast with the deeper tones of the dynamic waves and jagged rocks in the foreground. In this scene, energy and stillness exist together.

As I made my way around the pond, I heard a distinct Plop! I stopped to study the water's surface and noticed a tiny head poking out cautiously before it ducked back under.

I did feel a bit guilty for unintentionally disturbing the turtle's repose near the water's edge. But turtle behavior is somewhat amusing as well. It's their reflexive (and audible) jump into the water — no apologies — followed by their quiet, periscope-like surveillance to determine what the heck is going on.
