Research sessie Ilse van Rijn dinsdag 29 april

Op dinsdag 29 april van 14.00-17.00 uur zal Ilse van Rijn, Van Eyck lecturer, de eerste research-sessie in een reeks leiden, die als rode draad Roland Barthes’ boek How To Live Together neemt. De sessies zullen zowel zijn werkwijze en de verschillende vormen van collectiviteit die Barthes voorstelt, bevragen. Aansluitend geeft Ilse om 17.30 uur een lezing. Locatie: Auditorium

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS NEARCH PROJECT ART & ARCHAEOLOGY  'THE MATERIALITY OF THE INVISIBLE' Deadline: 1 May 2014

The Van Eyck invites visual artists with a strong interest in archaeology as a method for their own artistic practice to apply for a fellowship for a period of 6 months in the framework of "NEARCH - New scenarios for a community-involved archaeology".

We are proud to say that the Van Eyck is a partner of NEARCH, a prestigious European project-based network of archaeological institutes and university departments. NEARCH is funded by the EU through 2018.  We are convinced that with all differences visual artists and archaeologists share many similar attitudes, modes of thought and outlooks – amongst them the importance of looking, researching, finding, creating, interpreting, presenting.

THE MATERIALITY OF THE INVISIBLE is one of the themes the partners of NEARCH aim to explore. This theme offers a hitherto unknown opportunity to research in practice the interaction between artists and archaeologists, to work together in close confines, to profoundly exchange information and to thoroughly questioning both professions in an age of change and fluctuating cultural attitudes. In 2017 an exhibition and symposium is planned to unveil the outcome of this process to an international audience of professionals and non-professionals alike.

The starting point for this fellowship is the idea that all that is visible expresses what is invisible – be it a photograph, a house, a fragment, a day in my life, an artwork, a car in the street.  And, similarly, all that is material stresses its immateriality - be it a ruin, a beam of light, a polished surface, a movie, a church. This is the tension of THE MATERIALITY OF THE INVISIBLE and of the working processes of artists and archaeologists.

What we are offering:

4 positions at the Van Eyck for a period of 6 months with the possibility of an extension depending on your project. The starting date will be fixed in mutual agreement 

A monthly stipend, a studio and a working budget

A travel budget to visit excavations and to collaborate closely with one of NEARCH’s partners

The support of Jan van Eyck’s advisors, the use of its Labs and its multidisciplinary community

Participation in the general meetings with NEARCH’s partners

Presentation of your work at the 2017 exhibition

Sanne Vaassen in Beating around the bush #2 Bonnefantenmuseum Maastricht, opening 24 april

Van Eyck deelnemer Sanne Vaassen toont werk in de tentoonstelling Beating around the bush, het tentoonstellingsprogramma waarmee het Bonnefantenmuseum in 2014 op onderzoekende wijze zijn collectie presenteert. In vier episodes zullen zowel de vaste waarden als de 'stille reserve' van de collectie in een dialoog worden gebracht met nieuwe en voorgestelde aankopen. Daarnaast zullen interventies in de vorm van kleine solopresentaties functioneren als spiegels waarin nieuwe inhoudelijke inzichten en perspectieven zich kunnen aandienen. Iedere episode heeft een andere thematische invalshoek waarbij de afzonderlijke kunstenaarspraktijken en de museumverzameling als geheel met omtrekkende bewegingen wordt verkend.

In Beating around the bush Episode #2 gaat de aandacht uit naar de wijze waarop verschillende noties van materialiteit, zintuiglijkheid en inhoudelijke betekenis zich in de beeldende kunst tot elkaar kunnen verhouden. Terwijl in Episode #1 de figuratieve beeldtaal overheerste, voert in deze episode abstractie de boventoon. Deze tentoonstelling laat zien hoe kunstenaars zich oriënteren op fundamentele esthetische aspecten van vorm, kleur, materiaal, volume, licht en geluid, en hoe de daaruit voortvloeiende kunstwerken zich kunnen manifesteren als voertuigen van verbeelding, mentale verdieping en zelfs kritiek.

Van Eyck participant Sanne Vaassen shows work in the exhibition Beating around the bush, the exhibition programme started in  2014, in which the Bonnefantenmuseum will be presenting its collection in an investigative way. In four episodes, both the fixed values and the 'quiet reserve' of the collection will be brought into dialogue with new and proposed acquisitions. In addition, interventions in the form of small solo presentations will function as mirrors to reflect new content-related insights and perspectives. Each episode has a different thematic angle, through which the individual artists' practices will be explored, as well as the museum collection as a whole and associated movements. 

In Beating around the bush Episode #2, the focus is on the way in which different notions of materiality, sensory perception and meaning can relate to one another in visual art. Whereas figurative art dominated Episode #1, the emphasis in this episode is on abstraction. This exhibition shows how artists can explore fundamental aesthetic aspects of form, colour, material, light and sound, and how the resulting artworks can manifest themselves as vehicles of imagination, mental depth and even criticism.

Lezingenserie Moving Images of Speculation #5: Artistic (Non)Labour and its Discontents 14 april 11-17 uur, Rotterdam

Op maandag 14 april wordt een lezingenserie georganiseerd door Marina Vishmidt, Anthony Iles en Van Eyck deelnemers Rachel O’Reilly en Jelena Vesić in het Piet Zwart Instituut, Rotterdam, binnen het kader van het Moving Images of Speculation In-Lab. Dit In-Lab is in 2013 opgestart aan de Van Eyck en is een artistiek onderzoek waarin een inventaris wordt gemaakt van het postfilmisch bewustzijn tegen de achtergrond van de financiële crisis.

Lecture Joseph Vogl Debts from the Future. On the Spectre of Capital 28 March at 5 p.m.

Van Eyck is pleased to organize a special lecture and public discussion with German philosopher Joseph Vogl, on his recent work The Spectre of Capital – a ghost story set in the economic system of tomorrow.

Following the immense success of his book in Germany and the recent launch of its Dutch translation, Vogl will speak for the first time in Maastricht, unfolding his expertise as a literary scholar as a means to formulate a sharp market critique.

In line with his widely distributed publication Über das Zaudern (On Tarrying), this is a rare opportunity for members of the public interested or working in the fields of art, literature, and economics.

Joseph Vogl is a German philosopher, Professor of German Literature, Cultural and Media Studies at the Humboldt-University of Berlin and a permanent visiting professor at Princeton University. Recent publications include: Über das Zaudern (2007), Soll und Haben. Fernsehgespräche (2009 co-author, Alexander Kluge), and Das Gespenst des Kapitals (2010), translated into Dutch as Het spook van het kapitaal by Uitgeverij Boom in December 2013.

Debts from the Future. On the Spectre of Capital is an event developed and produced by Sonja Lau, independent curator and participant at the Van Eyck, taking place in the context of the Van Eyck Moving Images of Speculations In-Lab.

Eerste Van Eyck Open Studios succesvol 

Zowel de preview- als de publieksdagen van de Van Eyck Open Studios, van 19 - 22 februari, zijn succesvol verlopen. Naast het werk in de studio’s waren de Labs open, werd het programma van de Van Eyck in al zijn aspecten gepresenteerd en werden poëzievoordrachten, een sjamanistische wandeling, een performance, een parade en verschillende workshops georganiseerd. In een aangename, ontspannen sfeer, was het hele gebouw opengesteld voor publiek. Niet alleen de kunstprofessionals, ook de lokale kunstliefhebbers en belangstellenden kwamen een kijkje nemen. In totaal kwamen meer dan 1500 mensen naar de Open Studios. De Open Studios was het moment voor de deelnemers om het werkproces dat zij hebben doorlopen te tonen. Voor de meeste deelnemende kunstenaars, ontwerpers en curatoren zit hun werkperiode aan de academie er nu op. Half maart verwelkomt de Van Eyck de nieuwe lichting deelnemers.

U hoeft niet te wachten tot de volgende Open Studios om de Van Eyck te bezoeken: naast lunch, koffie of drankje in ons café-restaurant, zijn ook de lezingen en presentaties die door het jaar heen worden georganiseerd toegankelijk voor publiek. Vanaf april beginnen we weer met de donderdagavond presentaties, waarin enkele deelnemers of een (gast)adviseur hun werk en artistieke visie zullen toelichten, met aansluitend een gezamenlijk etentje. Hou de website of Facebook in de gaten voor het wekelijks programma. Tot snel op de Van Eyck!

First Van Eyck Open Studios a success

Both the preview and the public days of the Van Eyck Open Studios, 19 - 22 February, were successfully concluded. Next to the work in the studios, the Labs were open and the programme of the Van Eyck in all its aspects was presented. Moreover; poetry readings, a shamanic walk, a performance, a parade and various workshops were organized. In a relaxed atmosphere, the complete building was opened up to the public. Not only art professionals, also local art lovers and other interested people came by. In total more than 1500 visitors visited the Open Studios. The Open Studios was the moment for the participants to show their work process of the last year. For most of the participating artists, designers and curators their work period at the academy has ended now. the Van Eyck welcomes the new participants mid-March.

You do not have to wait until the next Open Studios to visit the Van Eyck: besides lunch, coffee or drink in our café-restaurant, you are most welcome to join the lectures and presentations, organized throughout the year. From April onwards we’ll start anew with our Thursday night presentations, in which several participants or a (guest) advisor present their work and artistic vision, followed by a dinner. Performing Gender in Maastricht

Van 24 februari t/m 3 maart is een internationaal gezelschap van choreografen en beeldend kunstenaars in Maastricht aan het werk, in het kader van het internationale project Performing Gender. Performing Gender is een Europees dansproject dat middels de dans én beeldende kunst de stereotype beelden rondom seksuele voorkeur, identiteit en gender wil bevragen.

In Maastricht starten Jordi Cortés (choreograaf, Spanje), Nina Kurtela (multidisciplinair kunstenaar, Kroatië), Alessandro Sciarroni (beeldend kunstenaar en choreograaf, Italië), Connor Schumacher (choreograaf, Nederland) en Oscar Santillan (beeldend kunstenaar uit Ecuador en werkend in Nederland) een onderzoek naar de diversiteit aan beelden in relatie tot het thema. Met als uiteindelijk resultaat een serie nieuw gecreëerde danssolo’s en performances die tijdens de 17e editie van Festival de Nederlandse Dansdagen in oktober 2014 in première gaan.

De Nederlandse Dansdagen, mede initiator en vormgever van dit internationale project, werkt in deze onderzoeksweek nauw samen met de Van Eyck en het Bonnefantenmuseum. Op 27 februari delen de kunstenaars in het Bonnefantenmuseum een eerste live gedanste schets van hun werk met een select aantal genodigden.

Performing Gender in Maastricht

Performing Gender is a European dance project on gender and sexual orientation differences and wants to build a European laboratory in which dominant codes and mainstream images in relation to gender and sexual preferences are questioned and reflected upon, bringing this into the wider community through the universal language of the arts, to develop new images and to collect new insights together. The starting point of this journey is the body of the artist, seen as the ideal cultural medium to research and to portray new identities. 

 Performing Gender is in Maastricht from 24 February – 3 March for its fourth and last workshop, and is organised by the Dutch Dance Festival in close collaboration with the Bonnefantenmuseum and the Van Eyck. 

The five artists involved in this Maastricht Workshop are Connor Schumacher (Netherlands), Alessandro Sciarroni (Italy), Jordi Cortés (Spain), Nina Kurtela (Croatia), and Oscar Santillan (Ecuador, working in the Netherlands at the Van Eyck). The activities are scheduled from 24th February to 3rd March; a 'first draft' of the artists' work will be performed for a limited audience in the Bonnefantenmuseum on 27th February.

MONDE POSSIBLE

Today the Van Eyck Open Studios are beginning. For this occasion Yeb Wiersma asked Thebol Malonga, a sign painter from Brazzaville who she accidentally met in Café Bel Ami in Liège to paint the words Monde Possible* on the biggest window of the Jan van Eyck building; that of the library. This time Thebol didn't paint his words on the outside looking in, but the other way round, looking out to (fictional) worlds elsewhere. - *When she asked Thebol Malonga for his portfolio he told her he didn't have one in print, the city itself was his showcase. He took her for a walk along all the shop windows he decorated. The first one they came across upon was a hair dresser's salon

called: 'Monde Possible'. So it goes.

Van Eyck Open Studios

De Van Eyck opent na een jaar van werken aan het nieuwe programma haar deuren. De deelnemers tonen werk in hun studio's, de projecten van de Van Eyck Mirror en de Hubert van Eyck Academie worden gepresenteerd, het werk van het poet-in-residence programma en de Van Eyck Collection wordt onder uw aandacht gebracht. 

Woensdag 19, donderdag 20 en vrijdag 21 februari is de academie open voor genodigden. Van Eyck Open Studios

The Van Eyck, Multiform institute for Fine Art, Design and Reflection, is keeping open house. For a year now the institute has been running its new programme. The participants are very keen to show their latest work in their studios, which are beautifully supplemented by the projects of Van Eyck Mirror and the Hubert van Eyck Academy, the poet-in-residence programme and the Van Eyck Collection. The full programme – comprising presentations, tours, lectures and performances – will soon be announced. 

The academy first welcomes a select group of invited guests on Wednesday 19, Thursday 20 and Friday 21 February. On Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. on Saturday 22 February from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. the Van Eyck will be glad to receive the public for its Open Studios. Would you like to visit the Van Eyck during the preview days at 19, 20 or 21 February for professional reasons, then please send an email to [email protected]
