music : skin tight by rayvn lenae ft. steve lacy :)
Steveâs not entirely sure why exactly it began. All he remembers seeing you for the first time; not the first time you met, but the first time he actually saw you, saw you for what you were. He remembers thinking that you were beautiful, and he remembers wondering how he never noticed before, after all these years of knowing you. It made him slightly uncomfortable, how gorgeous you were. He just couldnât look at you in the way he used toâin that brotherly, companion, best friends forever sort of way.Â
It was at a party. Graduation party, to be exact. Somebody whose name Steve had never heard was hosting it, but it was in the town, so he was okay with going. You tagged along with him because who else would you tag along with; you went almost everywhere together, and that wasnât changing just because high school had ended. He drove the two of you. He doesnât recall having any weird thoughts during the drive, and even when you entered the party, which was already raging by the time you arrived. Fashionably late, right?
What happened, in the span of an hour or so, that changed Steveâs perception of you so completely? He couldnât pinpoint it, no matter how hard he tried. It wasnât as if heâd had an extraordinary amount to drink; he knew how to handle his liquor, and the alcohol at this particular function wasnât of especially good quality, anyhow. Â
You were talking to a girl. He didnât know the girlâs name, but he had seen you with her once or twice. What the girl looked like is irrelevant; he wasnât really studying her, anyway. It was you that he looked at, from across the roomâyou, and the way you laughed, the way your eyes sparkled in the dim lights overhead, the way you were standing, all sure of yourself, leaning against the wall as you watched the girl speak. And you hadnât even had anything to drink. You were the designated driver.
How could you look so confident sober? Steve sure did not possess that quality. Not at all.Â
Steve felt an overwhelming desire to walk over there, drag you to the bathroom, and fuck the daylights out of you. And that really scared him, so he swallowed the rest of his drink and wandered off to go chat up someone else. But they werenât you. And it scared him even more that he was comparing someone he planned to sleep with by the end of the night to you, his best friend since the fourth grade, and that this person... they werenât measuring up.Â
Nobody could measure up to you. Nobody. Â
What Steve doesnât know is that you have seen him for the entirety of your friendship. Youâve seen him, not just as best friend and partner to always rely on, but as hot, playboy Steve. Dreamy Steve, with those eyes and those pillowy lips, with those strong arms and big hands that you sometimes feel guilty about staring at for a little too long. Thank god he's far too oblivious to notice. Steve has never seen you that way, and he never will. You canât tell whether or not you should be sad about it.Â
You donât know how long youâve wanted him. Youâve always thought he was attractive, but wanting someone? Thatâs different. 4 years, maybe? That would be the full ride of your high school years, which seems right. Even through his thing with Nancy, you wanted him. It hurt more than youâd like to admit to pretend like things were just fine, to comfort him when they fought and eventually broke up, and through all the stuff afterward. Because Steve never truly got over her, not in the way he said he did. And that mightâve hurt more than all the other stuff combined.Â
So, when Steve started coming on to you, it was very hard for you to refuse him.Â
The first time it happened, you were at a beach party one of your friends was hosting, out of town. You dragged Steve with you because you didnât want to drive somewhere far alone, and he obliged, but only if you agreed to staying in a hotel for the night, because he did not want to be the designated driver. You were more than happy to say yes, and off you went.Â
Steve had been acting weird lately. He was always busy, always had an excuse as to why he couldnât hang out. But when you did hang out, he was just as warm as ever, and maybe even more soâtouching you when it wasnât really necessary, holding your hand to guide you someplace and just not letting go. It wasnât strange enough to make you say anything, but it was definitely enough for your mind to wander to various improbable conclusions.Â
Improbable, until 2am that night, when you were struggling to turn the key into the door to your hotel room, and Steve was behind you, giggling like a little boy. His hands were around your waist and he was holding you close, so close you could feel his heart beating rapidly against your back, and his hot breath was fanning over the shell of your ear; all of this, more than the fact that you were a bit drunk, was enough to make your fingers tremble as you again tried to unlock the door.Â
Suddenly, he stopped laughing, and went quiet for a few moments before he spoke again.Â
"Y/N,â he had said, voice just above a whisper. âStop for a sec.âÂ
You stopped, because you werenât really getting anywhere with the key anyway.Â
He placed one hand on either side of your waist and spun you slowly to face him. His pupils were blown and his face was flush with that pink most pale people get when theyâre inebriated; Steve especially, as youâd realized throughout your time with him. And he was grinning at you in this enigmatic way. You couldnât tell what he wanted. You could definitely speculate, but any answer you could come up with would be heavily biased by way of your own desires.Â
Steve stared blankly at you for a moment before his hands released you, and instead found themselves cradling your face.Â
âYouâre so beautiful,â he muttered, like it wasnât really for you and kinda just for the universe. But you heard it, of course you did, and all you could do was blink twice and try to figure out what to say.Â
âThanks, Stevie. Youâre beautiful too,â you finally said, smiling softly up at him. Steve paused and you registered the distance between the two of youârather, the lack thereof, because you were so close that if you twitched or jerked the wrong way you would end up kissing. And somehow, even though you had spent years telling yourself how gross and wrong it would be to even think about kissing Steve, you wanted to. You really, really wanted to.Â
Steve was gnawing on his bottom lip, his glossy gaze flickering from your eyes to your mouth and back again, and you suddenly got the message that maybe he too really, really wanted to. And so you took the leap and you kissed him. It felt like he was trying to swallow you whole, like a starved python, wrapping himself around you and pressing himself so close you thought your bodies would merge together. You wouldnât have minded.Â
You slipped him the key and he managed to get the door open in about two seconds, which would have wounded your ego were you not too entranced by the way he was still trying to kiss you as you fell into the room. It was violent; teeth clashing lips biting tongues swirling, hands roaming, squeezing, legs tangled. Boundaries crossed and shattered under the weight of pure desire.Â
And it felt good. For the time being.Â
Steve may not be the smartest guy in the world, let alone in Hawkins, but he knows when heâs doing something heâs not supposed to. Thatâs like, toddler level intelligence. And that night, and every night with you afterwards, he felt it. That guilt, that shame, because this was something he wanted with every fiber of his being, but it was something he knew he should not be doing. It had the potential to ruin a friendship he had cherished for so many years. It had the potential to make him lose something he wasnât sure how to live without. You.Â
But god, if he didnât think about you, every second of the day. The way you just melted into his hands, like putty, how easy it was to coax those sweet sounds out of your mouth, as if just his touch was enough for you. He could tell you trusted him, so completely. You trusted him to make you feel good. You trusted him to keep you safe, to never hurt you, because he would never, ever hurt you.Â
You thought about him too. In conversation you would look him right in the eyes, but be thinking about his hands on your torso, his lips on your neck, his eyes that bore into yours and made you feel like the only person he would ever want in the world.Â
But you werenât together. You were just fucking.Â
This was something you had to make yourself remember from time to time. By the end of July, time to time became every time you saw Steve. You had no clue what he thought about the whole situationâyou never really had a conversation about it, and you were too scared to bring it up. It might disrupt the very delicate nature of whatever the two of you had going on, and you werenât ready for it to end just yet.Â
Steve wasnât ready either. He liked what you had now, because you were able to act like best friends and treat one another just the same way you had been before, but later, when nobody was around, you kissed and you held him and it felt just like it had the first time. At some point, he started dreaming not just about your body, but just you.Â
He started thinking about you, and your friendship. The years you had spent together. How he felt when you werenât around, when he couldnât call on you. And Steve realized, to his horror, he was in love with you. Maybe it shouldâve made him happy, but instead it just filled him with fear. He had gotten the two of you wrapped up by something that was threatening to squeeze the life out of him, but he didnât want to let go.Â
âI feel like this is not gonna end well.âÂ
Steve sighs to himself and rubs his hands over his face. The store is empty except for himself and Robin, who has just finally worn him down on whatever the hell has been going on between himself and Y/N. On one hand it feels good to get it off his chest, but on the other heâs not sure if heâs ready to submit himself to the endless barrage of questions he knows will be coming soon.Â
âYeah. I donât think it will either,â he confesses, holding his head in his hands as he leans his elbows onto the cashier counter. âBut I just canât stop.âÂ
Robin scoffs. âI mean, I guess it makes sense. The sexual tension between you guys has been a lot worse these past months.âÂ
"Worse? So there was... tension, in the first place?âÂ
Steve feels like an idiot when he finally looks up to see Robin staring at him incredulously. Usually, theyâre stupid together, but at this moment he feels like a kid whose mother is trying to explain some complex science. âYes, idiot. Theyâre practically in love with you. You should just tell them how you feel. You guys are making me sick.âÂ
His chest is hurting a bitâevery time heâs thought about them this week, heâs felt like his ribs are closing in on his heart. Maybe he should get that checked out. âThey arenât in love with me. Weâre just... you know.âÂ
âFucking?âÂ
Steve winces at the vulgarity of the term. âYeah. That.âÂ
âThat doesnât mean theyâre not in love with you. Maybe theyâre not saying anything âcause theyâre afraid you donât feel the same way.âÂ
The little bell above the front door rings and in comes some guy and his gaggle of middle school friends. Steve sighs and stands up straight as they begin thumbing through the horror section.Â
âThat would certainly be ironic.âÂ
A week later, youâre on the phone with your older sister, whoâs away at college. Youâve been talking about Steve for 15 minutes without actually having said his nameâyour sister of course knows who he is, because she was forced to witness your shenanigans together before she left. Itâs not that you donât trust her, but youâd rather not have to deal with the questions you know sheâll ask if she knows that this person youâre talking about sleeping with is Steve Harrington.Â
âHey, donât kill me if Iâm wrong... but are you talking about Steve? Like Steve, your best friend since elementary school?â Â
Well, so much for that. Fuck.Â
You hesitate for a moment, but thatâs all she needs as a confirmation. âOh shit. Youâre sleeping with Steve. Jesus, Y/N.âÂ
âYeah,â you breath, squeezing your eyes shut. âI know. Bad idea.âÂ
Sheâs quiet for a moment before you hear her take a deep breath. âYouâve been head over heels for this guy for so long. Why would you do that to yourself?âÂ
The way sheâs phrasing it makes you feel really stupid and pathetic, but you know sheâs right. Why would you do that to yourself? Youâre just making yourself suffer, and for what? Because he fucks good? It is really good, and youâve never had anyone make you feel that way before, but you could probably find someone else. You couldâve found someone else. Yet, you submitted yourself to Steve just like that and now youâre in a mess of shit.Â
âI donât know. I guess I just... he initiated, you know? And it felt really good for him to want me the way Iâve wanted him for who knows how fucking long. So I just fell for it. It was dumb, I know. I feel like an idiot already, you donât have to tell me.âÂ
Your sister hums to herself, as she does often when sheâs thinking.Â
âIt was dumb. But Iâm sort of glad you went for it, because if you didnât, you would just be stuck pining after him forever, you know? At least now, you have something to go off of. I say you tell him how you feel. And if he doesnât feel the same, fuck him. Not literally, of course. Youâre already doing that.âÂ
The way she said it, it all seemed so simple. Frankly, it all could be that simple. But she just didnât get it. How could she? You couldnât lose Steve, you just couldnât. He had been by your side so long that imagining life without him made your heart shrivel up and fall to pieces like a dying rose.Â
âYeah. Youâre right. Iâll tell him.âÂ
âNot very convincing. But you do you, alright? If you need to talk again, Iâm always available. Between 3 and 7pm on weekdays. Not at all on the weekends. But, you know. You have mom.âÂ
âHa ha. Very funny.âÂ
Another week passes and neither of you reach out to the other. Youâre beginning to feel like this is it, this is the end of whatever youâve been doing, possibly the end of your friendship, too. Itâs making you so anxious that you can barely sleep at night; all you do is imagine all your memories with him, and wonder if one day when youâre old and grey youâll forget all about them because you never got to make anymore. You try not to cry about it.Â
Steve cries about it. At least, he did, just once, but he was sort of high and he was with Robin and just couldnât stop talking about this one time the two of you skipped school to get ice cream and go see a movie. It was a horror movie, and you held his hand because even though he said he wasnât afraid, he was afraid, because Steve was still recovering from his second encounter with the Upside Down and the special effects were looking a little too real.Â
âThey were there for me, man. Theyâve always been there for me. I canât fuckinâ lose that, you know?âÂ
Robin inhaled the smoke deeply and blew it out in a ring. Sheâd been practicing that trick.Â
âYou wonât lose them. Theyâll always be there, even if they donât feel the same way. You canât just... erase years of friendship. You canât erase what you guys have.âÂ
Oh yes, you can. Robin knew that, but she didnât say it, because Steve was already crying and sheâs never seen him cry before. It was a little awkward but she managed to keep herself from laughing.Â
You canât ignore Steve forever. Spending more than a day without at least seeing him once feels wrong, let alone purposefully avoiding him for seven of them. And then thereâs the issue of why he hasnât called or stopped by or anything. Maybe heâs decided enough is enough. Regardless, you need to tell him how you feel. If it ends badly, oh well. You can always catch the bus out of town. Disappear without a trace, that kind of thing. Youâve kinda always wanted to try it.Â
On Friday the 13th of August, Steve is standing in the Family Video Store sweating his ass off. The air conditioning broke yesterday; conveniently, this is the second hottest day of the summer, so heâs pretty much miserable at the moment. Heâs leaning against the counter waiting for a dad and his daughter to pick between Raiders of the Lost Ark and Wrath of Khan. Personally, he would go for Fast Times, but the customer is always right, anyhow.Â
The little bell above the front door jingles and he expects it to be Robin coming back from the donut shop with two jelly donuts and an iced coffee, so he doesnât bother looking. However, when they get close enough, Steve catches a whiff of a very familiar laundry detergent and his heart freezes in his chest.Â
âLong time no see, Stevie,â you greet, flashing him as genuine a smile as you can. Your stomach is rumbling and you hope he canât hear it.Â
When Steve looks up at you, his eyes almost bulge out of their sockets, and your heart drops a little in your chest. Heâs really, really not looking happy to see you. You donât know what you were expecting; you had rationalized his lack of contact with the idea of him being busy, but in truth you shouldâve known better. The only time heâs busy is when the town is under attack by paranormal monsters, and as far as you know thatâs not the case.Â
âY/N, hey. What... um, whatâre you doinâ here?â What a fucking stupid thing to say. What are you doing here? Obviously, theyâre here to see you, dickweed. Steve does his best to regain his composure and gives you a smile heâs sure looks as awkward as it feels.Â
âCan we... uh. Can we talk? Outside, maybe? Itâs too fucking hot in here.â Not like itâd be any better outside, but youâd rather not be in the store for this. If it goes badly, like you expect it to, at least youâll have free range to run away.Â
Steve swallows hard. âYeah. For sure. Just give me a sec.âÂ
You stand aside and watch as he slides out from behind the cashier counter, approaching the only two customers in the store. He talks to them for a minute or so, clearly weighing two movie options for the man and what looks to be his teenage daughter. The way he smiles at them, you almost forget what youâre here to do, but itâs a little hard to focus when heâs just so... him. Dreamy Steve with the beautiful heart. Your Steve. If you can remember that, maybe you can stop being so anxious.Â
Steve rings the two up and they exit the store; the minute they do so, the weight of silence is heavy on your shoulders and you slump a little under the pressure. Your attempt at holding a smile has long been forgotten, and now youâre just gnawing on your lip, trying to distract yourself from your frayed nerves.
Heâs staring right at you, and you can see his Adamâs Apple bob as he swallows hard. You donât think youâre gonna make it outside. You decide that you have to do it, right now, or else youâll never bring yourself to do it again.Â
âI canât do this anymore,â you blurt, not really bothering to think carefully about what you want to say. You created a whole script in your head prior, but youâve gone blank and decide to let your heart take the wheel.Â
Instead of saying, do what? like you predicted he would, Steve only inhales sharply and says; âMe either.âÂ
Heâs looking down at the counter now, and you approach him slowly, so that youâre standing right in front of him.Â
âItâs not that I donât... like doing it, with you. I love it. Itâs really good. Itâs fun. But, fuck, I...â you donât know how to continue, because heâs brought his eyes up to yours and theyâre so brown and glossy and big you think you might just fall into them.Â
âItâs too weird?â Steve asks, and you feel your heart being chipped away at just a little bit. Thatâs why he thinks youâre ending it, because itâs too weird? You know that he couldnât possibly know how you feel, but for some reason it makes you angry, and you feel tears prickling at the corners of your eyes.Â
âJesus fuck, Steve. No, itâs not because itâs too weird. Itâs because I canât stand it. I canât stand that all of the sudden, youâre into me, you think Iâm hot, and you wanna kiss me, and fuck me, and do all these things, because Iâve wanted that for so long. So. Long.â You would think the bewildered expression on Steveâs face would hinder you, but it just fuels your ire, and you take a deep breath through your tears.Â
âAnd I think the worst part isnât that you never wanted me the way I always wanted you. The worst part is that even though you might think you do now, you still donât. So, the reason I canât do this anymore is because it hurts. It really fucking hurts.âÂ
Youâre out of breath now, and youâre sure your face is red. You thank god Robinâs not here because if she suddenly popped out of the break room you probably wouldâve passed out on the spot. In fact, you might just do it now. Steveâs shocked expression falls and is replaced by one that makes your heart feel too big in your chest. He looks sad. He rarely looks sad. Your anger is simmering into a quiet aching.Â
âHow... how do you want me? What do you want from me?â Steveâs voice is just above a whisper. You can tell he doesnât mean it in that way, but you take it that way anyhow. You choke quietly on your own tears and furiously wipe your eyes on your sleeve.Â
âFuck, Steve, I donât want anything from you. I just love you. I have, for so long. And I wish maybe you could love me back in that way, but I know you canât. So Iâm ending this, whatever it was.â Iâm ending us. Our friendship. Everything we had, reduced to one tough conversation and a summer fling that felt like it lasted a lifetime.Â
You donât say that, but you can see Steve hears it anyway. His eyebrows upturn and he looks a beached whale, so far from home but just in its reach. You want to turn and run, but not because youâre scared, but because you donât have anything else to say. What else is there to say? Youâve finally fished your deepest secret from the depths of your heartâs ocean, and now you feel empty.Â
You inhale and turn around.Â
âY/N, please, donâtâshit, I.. give me a minute.âÂ
You donât continue walking, but you donât face him again.Â
âJust let me say something, and then you can go if you really want to.âÂ
A few seconds pass and you hug yourself, hoping that if you squeeze tight enough youâll fold into yourself and escape this horrible, horrible feeling. Escape this moment.Â
âCan you... you know. Turn around? Please?âÂ
This better be fucking good.Â
You abide by his request and spin to face him slowly. His face is red; is he blushing, angry, nervous? You canât tell. His eyebrows are furrowed, so maybe heâs angry, but you feel as if heâs just very focused on what heâs about to say. Rarely does Steve do anything with his eyebrows when heâs mad. Thatâs the worst thing about itâthereâs never an expression on his face.Â
âDo you remember the first time we.. you know. In that shitty hotel?â
You nod slowly, hoping he has an actual point to this and heâs not just stalling for time.Â
âWhen we woke up the next morning, and you were all cuddled up next to me, I got this really bad feeling in my stomach. Like I was not supposed to be doing this, like I had gone off path or something and I was in the wrong neighborhood. But I didnât wanna wake you up, so I didnât freak out or anything. I tried to go back to sleep, but not before I looked at you, just to make sure it was actually you, and I wasnât losing my mind.âÂ
You sniffle and sigh. âHow the fuck is this supposed to make me feel better?âÂ
Steve winces. âIâm getting to it, I promise. Just bear with me.âÂ
He moves toward the exit from behind the counter to right in front of you. You try to ignore the proximity, and focus on the wall behind him. Itâs a little hard, since you can tell heâs looking you right in the eyes, but you manage.Â
âWhen I looked at you, this really weird thing happened. All the bad stuff I was feeling, all the nerves and the fear and all that, went away. And there was just you and me and the sun coming into through the window, and the sound of you breathing. It was... good. It felt really good. It felt like I was in the right place. And that feeling... well, it hasnât gone away. Itâs actually gotten worse.âÂ
Steve pauses. Like heâs waiting for you to say something. You wonât, because you donât know what the hell he wants you to say, let alone what heâs saying.
âSteve,â you say, finally meeting his gaze. âWhy are you telling me this?âÂ
âBecause,â he breaths. You're so close you can hear the sound of him swallowing. Itâs loud and you bet his mouth is really dry right now. âI donât know how else to tell you how I feel.âÂ
Your heart stops. â...how you feel?â
âYeah. How I feel. About you, about us, about everything. I donât know how else to... to phrase it.âÂ
âTry. Iâll wait,â you say, and a little smile creeps its way onto your face. Hope, instead of fear and anger and sadness, bubbles up into your chest, eradicating all the bad feelings like bug repellent. You watch him as he registers your request, and his eyes never leave yours.Â
He takes your hands. You can feel that theyâre clammy and hope he doesnât feel how shaky yours are. âI donât regret what we did. I donât want to stop. But I donât want... just that. I want you. I want you in every way. In any way youâll have me.âÂ
A silence sets over the store. Steve finally breaks eye contact and you can feel his rapid pulse on your finger, which rests on his wrist.Â
âDoes that make sense?â he asks, his voice wavering ever so slightly.Â
âYeah,â you smile, and let go of his hand to rest your own on his cheek, to make him look at you again. âI understand.âÂ
Steve smiles back, and then it breaks out into a face-splitting grin, and a little sigh of relief escapes him. He looks so cute, like a child on Christmas morning, staring right at their favorite gift.Â
âYou understand,â he repeats. And then he finally breaks the ice and envelops you in his arms, holding you so tight that youâre sure youâre going to melt into him. You always do.Â
âIâm sorry.â Steveâs voice is muffled by your skin because heâs shoved his face into your neck. You feel his mouth moving against you.Â
âI know. Iâm sorry too.â Youâre not even sure what youâre apologizing for, but it feels right to say it in the moment.Â
You hold each other like for a while. Youâre still crying, but not because youâre really sad or even because youâre really happyâthough, the latter still applies. It just keeps coming out. So when Steve finally pulls away from you, he cradles your face in his hands and his thumbs wipe your tears, slightly calloused but still sort of soft. They move slow and you stare into his eyes the whole time, and your cheeks hurt because of how hard youâre smiling.Â
âCan I kiss you?â Steve asks, timidly, like youâre going to say no.Â
âYeah. You can.âÂ
And somehow, even though youâve kissed many times before, it feels different this time. Itâs not violent, itâs not raw, itâs not even that passionate, but itâs real. It makes your stomach fill with warmth and your skin tingle in the places where it meets his. In this kiss, Steve is trying to pour all the words he canât say, and you hear them. You hear them in the way he chases you when you pull away, in the dreamy look in his eyes as he studies your face.Â
âSo... this means we can keep sleeping together, right?âÂ
Your smile falls and you hit him on the shoulder, but he just laughs and kisses you again, this time more of a peck.Â
âKidding. Sorry. Not funny.â Obviously, he thinks itâs funny. And you think itâs a little funny too, but you canât let him know that.Â
âTake me out to dinner first. Then we can discuss the... other stuff.â Your heart flutters at the way his grin grows at your words.Â
summary : eddie munson has a huge crush on y/n l/n. which really sucks, because sheâs his friend, and sheâs way out of his league... but god, sheâs so gorgeous.Â
notes : slight spoilers for s4 :) so incredibly slight. thatâs all <3 this is for all my eddie lovers in light of some... recent developments.
ALSO! requests are open :) check out my pinned post for more info on that. enjoy!
Eddie Munson has a crush.Â
Which is weird, because he hasnât had a crush on anybody for what must be at least two years. Not for any specific reason. Heâs just never allowed himself to feel those things for someone else, because 1) he always gets rejected, anyhow 2) there are more important things in his life. Like Hellfire Club. And actually graduating. In that order, of course.Â
But as much as Eddie wants to focus only his campaign, on recruiting new members, on at least passing the same math class heâs been in for who knows how long, he finds himself thinking about her a lot more often than he wishes he would. He tried to deny, deny, deny, for as long as he could, until it got ridiculous and he realized how stupid he sounded attempting to rationalize this odd set of emotions to be anything other than what they so plainly were.Â
Eddie Munson has a crush.Â
And sheâs so beautiful. Sheâs got a gorgeous smile, sheâs got a pretty laugh. Her voice is so perfect that sometimes when he reads things in his head he imagines that itâs her reading it instead, which has actually become a successful studying tactic in recent weeks. So maybe this crush has been a little helpful in areas of his life that he needs help in, but the hassle of it all is much more evident.Â
His favorite thing about her is that she doesnât care for traditional labels, like loser or jock or stupid shit that movies made up to divide the high school population. She eats lunch with him and his boys, she cheers at the football games on Fridays, she participates in art shows and debate competitions on the weekends. And where somebody else would be outcast for trying to be so many things at once, it works for her, because itâs her, and anybody who even tried to shun her would be, for lack of better words, an idiot.Â
Hereâs the thing. Eddie Munson has a huge crush on Y/N L/N, and he stands no chance.Â
And when he says no chance, he means absolutely zero. Zero as in zilch, as in itâs a pipe dream that he could ever be with her, as in the probability of her saying yes even if she had just hit her head in a serious car accident would be 100 to 1.Â
This is the main reason Eddie has been attempting to convince himself that he doesnât actually have a crush on her, because if he allows the idea to take root in his mind he knows he wonât be able to let go of it. He wonât even talk about it. Saying the actual words would make it real. Too real.Â
Except, his lips tend to get a little loose when heâs not fully in control of his facilities. As in, when heâs high, which is at least once a week; unfortunately, heâs never alone when he smokes, which makes the chance that itâll slip out much higher. For this reason, he always makes excuses not to get high with her. He lies about being busy, and if he actually agrees he doesnât smoke enough to lose his ability to reign in his thoughts. He always regrets it when he does the latter, because even if heâs not super high, being even the slightest bit inebriated around her is a recipe for disaster. Y/N always looks prettiest when Eddie is high. Not that she doesnât look pretty no matter what.Â
But today is a special day. Itâs the last day of school before Spring Break, which usually would suck because the whole day Eddie would just be looking forward to the final hour. But Y/Nâs parents are dragging her on a trip for the entirety of the break, so Eddie promised to make tonight extra special for herâas in, theyâll smoke, drink, listen to music, and all around have as lovely a time as is possible for him when heâs alone with her. They werenât actually supposed to be alone, but everyone else canceled last minute. Very convenient. Sometimes Eddie wonders if all his friends know about this crush of his without him having to actually say anything.Â
Spoiler alert: there is actually not that much fun that is possible for Eddie when heâs alone with Y/N, because half the time heâs wishing he could be kissing her, and the other half heâs afraid heâll say something dumb and fuck things up. But heâs not about to let her leave without seeing her for as much time as possible, so Eddie decides heâll just have to grow some balls and act normal and be her friend even if he really really wants to be more.Â
Eddie doesnât realize heâs been sitting in one place zoning out until he hears three loud knocks on the trailer door, accompanied by a voice thatâs all too familiar, though he canât make out the words. He blinks a few times and glances at the clockâheâs been here for 20 minutes. Maybe he should cut down on the, you know, drugs. Itâs probably not having a great impact on his attention span.Â
âEds, hurry up. Itâs cold!âÂ
Fuck. Sheâs here.Â
Eddie bolts up from his uncleâs Lazy Boy and heads straight for the door; not, of course, before checking his hair in the mirror by the TV. Looking good, Munson. Letâs hope Y/N thinks the same. (Who is he kidding?)Â
When Eddie opens the door and sees her standing there, he kinda sorta wishes that he canceled too. He doesnât think heâs ever seen her look so good. Sure, heâs seen her in that really cute cheerleader outfit, which he calls stupid to her face but literally dreams about at night, but itâs nothing compared to this.Â
âWhat? You didnât think I was giving this back, did you?â she greets, grinning playfully as she pushes past him and into the trailer. God, he feels like heâs about to burst, because sheâs wearing his sweater. He let her borrow it a week or so ago because she spilled something on her own, but never got the chance to see her in it because he was headed to Hellfire Club, and heâs not late to that, not ever.Â
Eddie swallows and curses himself for standing there like an idiot before he closes the door. âThatâs my favorite sweater.â It actually isnât, but now it is.Â
She laughs and swings the plastic bag full of snacks and whatever else onto the table. âToo bad. Itâs mine now.âÂ
No complaints there. Heâd literally pay her to wear it everyday.Â
Eddie does pretty well for the first hour or so. All Y/N wants to do is talk and eat chips and drink the shitty alcohol she managed to score off her older brother, and thatâs safe for him, so Eddie has no issues with that. She talks a lot, which he loves. Sheâs talking about this movie she really liked as a kid when it happens for the first time.Â
âFuck, whatâs the name? I canât remember the name. This is gonna annoy me all night,â she sighs, squeezing her eyes shut as if thatâll help her come up with it. Her legs are crossed and sheâs sitting on the couch, a can of whatever it is sheâs been sipping in hand. Eddie has one of his own but he hasnât been able to drink much of it. Heâs too nervous, which seems contradictory seeing as being a little inebriated would make him less nervous, but he canât bother to try explaining the intricacies of his mind.Â
Eddie laughs a little at her, which prompts Y/N to open her eyes and give him a slight glare. âWhatâs so funny, Munson? Iâm trying to remember!âÂ
âMy bad, my bad. Please, carry on remembering.âÂ
She huffs. "Fuck, this is so irritating. Why canât I just remember?âÂ
Y/N heaves another sigh, placing her drink on the side table as she stretches her arms upwards. Before Eddie can really react, she free falls her upper body right toward him, landing squarely with her head on his thigh, and her arms on either side of her face; one hand brushing against Eddieâs side, and one hanging off the couch.Â
Eddie wants to die.Â
She looks pretty, looking up at him with those big eyes, smiling even more brightly than she usually doesâor maybe it just looks that way, who knows. Either way, Eddie hopes he doesnât look as starstruck as he feels, because if he does heâs sure sheâs gonna burst out laughing.Â
âWoah, Eds, youâve got really nice eyes. How come I never noticed?â Y/N reaches a hand up to grab at his face, and her fingertips leave scorching marks on his cheeks.Â
âUm,â he stutters, hoping sheâs a little too off-her-rocker to notice. âThanks.âÂ
She giggles. âYouâre such a dork.â And then her hands fall and she sits up and itâs all over.Â
Eddie decides heâll drink a little more from that point on.Â
Itâs about an hour before anything of that nature happens again. By that point, Eddieâs finished his can of piss and he feels it coursing through his veins, making him a little more loose, a little more him, because heâs so anxious right now that Tipsy Him is kinda just Normal Him. The two of them are sitting outside now. Y/Nâs lying on her side on the picnic table by his trailer and heâs seated on the bench, listening to her retell a story about being kicked out of a grocery store.Â
When she finishes, she goes quiet, and Eddie wonders if maybe he should tell a story now. What about that one where he almost fell out of a rollercoaster in Minnesota? Or that time he was chased by 5 middle schoolers through the woods? Orâ
âWanna smoke?âÂ
Never mind. That sounds like a better idea. âHell yeah.âÂ
They go back inside; to Eddieâs room, to be exact, which he cleaned up a little before her arrival. Just enough that it doesnât look like he did it just for her, because even if Y/Nâs never been to his house, everyone knows Eddie doesnât exactly keep his abode spick and span. Itâs a stereotype, but itâs pretty much true.Â
âGive me a sec. I pre-rolled some, just gotta find em...â he trails off, digging through his comics and other nerdy shit as he tries to remember where he put his tin.Â
âOh my god, your guitar! Sheâs beautiful,â Y/N breaths, shuffling past him and toward his one true love. He smiles to himself as he continues to look, trying to ignore the urge to turn around and watch as she no doubt admires his baby. Finally, Eddie discovers that heâs hidden his tin underneath his pajamas from the previous night, which means itâs on the floor. He probably couldâve cleaned that up, but oh well.Â
Soon, the two of them are sitting on the floor, shoulder to shoulder as they lean against his bed and share a joint. Eddie doesnât think heâs been so content in a while.Â
âHey, why donât you have a girlfriend?âÂ
He almost chokes on the smoke that leaves his lips; just at the right time, he thinks, because if sheâd said it while the joint was still in his mouth he would probably be keeled over trying to cough it up out of his throat. Y/N giggles at his reaction and lays her hand on his shoulder, making him turn to look at her.Â
âI mean it! Youâre so handsome, Eds. And youâre probably the only guy Iâve never heard make a gross joke about girls.âÂ
Eddie blinks back at her for a moment, unsure of how to react to thatâmaybe he should correct her, because while heâs never made a gross joke about a girl in front of her, heâs definitely done it otherwise. And then it hits himâ
âIâm handsome?âÂ
Y/N stares with this incredulous look in her eyes, like sheâs somewhere far away and is struggling to get back to reality, where sheâs just called Eddie Munson handsome and is sitting next to him smoking a joint.Â
âYes, dork. You didnât know?âÂ
Eddie is completely and utterly terrified that heâs about to say the wrong thing. Even worse, heâs blank on words right nowâhis mind is essentially a wiped blackboard, and all thatâs left are vague scribblings of time long past, shadows of sentences that he canât make out. And heâs staring at her with bug eyes and she looks so cute waiting on his response, because she doesnât look at all phased by the long stretch of silence that has followed her reply.Â
Finally, he thinks of something, and maybe itâs because he just wants to fill the quiet or because the high is starting to hit, but he doesnât really ponder too hard about the consequences of his actions before he saysâ
âI really wanna kiss you right now.âÂ
Itâs Y/Nâs turn to go mute, and go mute she does. Her expression is frozen in a smile, glossy eyes, eyebrows raised. Eddie feels as if he is going to explode. Chunks of his brain are going to splatter against the posters on his wall. Theyâre going to find his blown off fingers underneath the bed, next to his porno magazines. His eyeballs will fly out the window and the neighborâs dog will eat them.Â
âKiss me, then.âÂ
BOOM. Blood splatters all over his carpet and his bedding and Y/N screams, cradling what remains of his mutilated body in her armsâ
Oh.Â
âWhat did you say?â Eddieâs voice comes out as a mix between a croak and a whisper as he gawks at her face. She smiles and inches a little closer. The space between them is so small that he can smell the fruity alcohol on her tongue, smell the potency of the weed on her breath. Itâs like a fucking aphrodisiac.Â
âYou wanna kiss me, right? Then do it.âÂ
It takes him a few more seconds to register her request; a few seconds too long, because before Eddie knows it sheâs closed the distance. Her lips are suddenly slotted against his and there arenât any fireworks, sparks, tingles, nothing; it just feels so incredibly right, like this is the only thing in the world Eddie is meant to be doing at this moment, at any moment, for all time.Â
She tastes like a bitter candy, a result of the different substances she had consumed that evening. It tastes really fucking good. Eddie hopes he tastes just as good as her, just as intoxicating, because maybe then sheâll need him in this moment just as much as he needs her.Â
Y/N hums to herself, something Eddie isnât sure what the meaning of is, but understands when she pulls away just a moment after. She keeps her forehead touching his, and their noses are still poking one another as well, which Eddie appreciates because he wants to remain as close to her as humanely possible so the spell doesnât break.Â
âThat was really nice. Youâre a good kisser,â she whispers, smiling so hard heâs sure her cheeks are aching. She looks him in the eyes and her pupils are blown up so big that they look like black holes, sucking him in. Heâs happy to go along with them.Â
âIâve wanted that for so long,â Eddie confesses, almost regretting it when she giggles softly.Â
âMe too.â Eddie feels like he should die right now, because heâs already in Heaven.Â
âCan we do it again?â His heart is pounding so hard he's afraid she can hear it.
âWait.âÂ
Sheâs quiet for a second, before she pulls away even further and takes his hands in hers. He misses the contact of her face so close to his, but in her eyes Eddie can tell thereâs something she wants to say. Rather, something she wants to hear. He has an inkling he knows just what that is, but an inkling isnât enoughâheâs not sure anything would be enough to make him admit his feelings, because the idea of being rejected by her and losing her in his life forever is something he just canât fathom. He needs her. Even if it means he can only have a part of her, he just needs something.Â
âEds,â Y/N starts, her tone more serious than it had been before. Yet, her pretty smile hasnât fallen, and her pupils are still staring right into his. He feels like his pupils are pretty big too, even though he canât see them, and he wonders if he can see more of her like thisâas if his pupils being larger would let him absorb more of her into his memory.Â
âDo you remember that one time i got mad at you? Like, really mad. That time we didnât talk for a week. Remember that?âÂ
Eddie nods. âOf course I do. Worst week of my life.âÂ
Y/Nâs smile gets a little wider but she tries to bit it backâit doesnât work. âI said I was mad because you ditched our movie night for Hellfire. But that wasnât the actual reason. The real reason was something really dumb thatâs gonna make me sound so fuckinâ stupid, but Iâm gonna tell you anyway. Ready?âÂ
âYou never sound stupid.â Alright. Enough with the buttering up, idiot. You don't have to say every compliment that comes to mind.Â
But she just smiles a little harder and ignores it.Â
âi wasnât mad at all. I was actually just sad, because I really wanted to spend time with you, and then I was upset because I realized I shouldnât be that sad about that, and then I was too scared to talk to you... because I realized, I really like you, Eddie. I really, really like you. I wanna spend every second that I can with you. I even considered joining Hellfire just to have extra time.â Â
Eddieâs mouth has gone dry.Â
âYou donât have to say anything. But I would really like you too, or else I might cry,â she adds, and he can hear in her voice that she is definitely not bluffing. The last thing he wants to see is her crying, especially if heâs the cause, so he starts to rack his mind for a way to properly articulate all the emotions and complex feelings and thoughts he has surrounding her.Â
Every time you look at me it feels like somebody has a hand wrapped around my chest and theyâre squeezing really fucking hard, trying to make my heart pop out of my throat or something. Every time Iâm doing something and youâre not with me Iâm thinking about you. I want to be the person you go to when youâre sad, the person who makes you happy when youâre sad, the person who never makes you sad, because I want to love you so much that you canât stand it anymore and you love me back just the same, because I can take it. There will never be a moment where I canât stand it. I want to make you the happiest girl on Earth, maybe in the whole galaxy. Standing next to you I feel like a person. I feel real. You make me feel real. I canât ever let you go.Â
But instead of saying all that, Eddie just smiles awkwardly at her and squeezes her hands.Â
âI think I might be in love with you.âÂ
His smile falls a little because sheâs made good on her promise; a few tears are running down her cheeks, but her lips are pulled into such a big grin that he would be remiss to think she was anything but extraordinarily happy. Like so happy that her face might split in two. And Eddie feels the same way, except heâs managing to keep it buried underneath the butterflies that swarm violently in his abdomen.Â
âGood. I think Iâm in love with you too.âÂ
Never did he think heâd ever hear her say those words. But here he is, slightly drunk and pretty high, which is a state of mind he promised himself to refrain from being in when heâs with her, and he wonders if maybe sheâs just saying all this because sheâs not sober. But before he can ask, she leans into him, and presses another kiss onto his lipsânot as violent or passionate as before, but just as sweet, and a little more loving.Â
âIâm really glad everyone else canceled. If we hadnât smoked alone, I wouldnât have had the balls to do any of that.âÂ
âIâm really glad you told me how you felt first. If you hadnât, weâd be sitting here in silence for at least another hour.â Eddie laughs when she hits his arm just hard enough for him to know sheâs just playing around, and finds that he canât stop laughing, even when she leans into him and they fall to the floor, his arms wrapped around her body as she lies on top of him.Â
âIâm so happy right now,â he whispers, not really saying it to her. âIâm so fucking happy.âÂ
Eddie Munson has a crush.
And sheâs so beautiful. Sheâs got a gorgeous smile, sheâs got a pretty laugh. Her skin is so soft that sometimes he just traces shapes on it to help himself fall asleep when heâs lying next to her. She supports him in everything he doesâat least, everything that makes some sort of sense, otherwise sheâll aptly call him out on his stupidity. And he loves her for it. He loves her for everything that she is, everything that sheâs not, everything she tries to be.Â
Eddie Munson has more than a crush. Eddie Munson is in love.Â
And thank god she loves him back. Otherwise, he thinks he might die.Â
notes : hey guys! i havenât written for tumblr in a while.. but i just finished stranger things new season and i feel especially motivated. :) S4 SPOILERS!!!
Some things never change.Â
Like Twinkies. Super reliable. Always there when youâre mindlessly eating to distract yourself from the other shit going on in your life. Always there when you want a little something sweet but youâre not in the mood for ice cream, or cookies, or whatever else they sell at that weird market near Steveâs house. Last time he went in there somebody had their dog on the counter, and the cashier was feeding it a Slim Jim. He hasnât been since.Â
Or coffee. Coffee usually tastes the same, no matter who makes it. Steve actually doesnât like coffee that much, but heâll take it when he has to. Black coffee only, and he just chugs it so it can kick in quickly and he doesnât have to wallow in the flavor for too long. Even if itâs not a great flavor, itâs a consistent flavor, and thatâs what really matters.Â
People change all the time, though. Theyâre supposed to. Like Steve. Heâs changed a lot, he thinks, and for the better. Heâs pretty proud of it, actually. Maybe it took a lot of douchebag-ery to get here, but heâs here now, spending his free time with a 15 year old.Â
But you, you havenât really changed. At least, not from what Steve can see. Youâre still very much into your musicâthe headphones you have on every time he sees you are proof of that. Youâre still quiet and you still struggle to order things for yourself in cafes or restaurants. Youâve still got that same look on your face when youâre focused; whatâs funny is that to a stranger, it probably doesnât seem like youâre focused at all. Steve always thought you looked far away when you were lasered in on something. Your eyes gloss over and your lips go slightly agape, your eyebrows are arched downwards and your back is always sort of hunched. You have horrible posture.Â
When Dustin forced Steve to go get you, he was very much against it. It was going to be torturous, especially because he knew Dustin had an issue with boundaries and was definitely going to talk to you about him, and because Robin never stopped asking him questions about the dozen girls heâd gone on dates with these past few months. Hopefully she could keep her mouth shut in front of you, but he sincerely doubted it.Â
But there was no saying no. You were apart of the original Demogorgon crew, and so it was sort of your right to be involved whenever something to do with the Upside Down went downâit seemed like it was a new thing every fucking year. And so Steve forced himself to go to your house and knock on your door and basically pull you out of your house, ignoring the extremely confused and very annoyed expression on your face.Â
Youâve always been an anxious person. When you were his problem, he knew how to avoid situations that would make that spike, and how to diffuse a situation that was already doing that. He shouldnât have said it like that; his problem, because you werenât his problem, you werenât a problem at all, and Steve feels guilty for thinking that when youâre essentially hyperventilating right in front of him.Â
âFuck, okay, just try to breath, breath,â Dustin is on it immediately, but heâs not really making it better; heâs pacing back and forth just staring at your face, while youâre leaning against the wall, clutching your chest with wide eyes.Â
Steve isnât even sure how this happened. One second, Max was handing out those stupid letters, and then Steve was arguing with the kid because she wanted him to drive her somewhere, which is even stupider. The conversation was promptly cut off when Dustin noticed you were breathing weird, and then boom. Here they were.Â
Finally, the kid halts his incessant movement, and spins on his heels to face in Steveâs direction, which is also the direction of his equally inept partners. The two other kids are too flabbergasted by the situation to even attempt help, which makes sense, but is still slightly infuriating. Steve guesses he canât really criticize them if heâs doing the same thing, though.Â
âDoes anybody know CPR?â Dustin blurts, his eyes lighting up like heâs just come up with a genius solution to this problem.Â
âHow the fuck would that help?â you wheeze, and all eyes dart to you, including Steveâs. You took the words right out of his mouth.Â
You lock eyes with him, and Steve feels like a real moron, because what is he doing just standing there? You look away just as quickly, and whimper as you sink to the ground, your head falling between your knees as your breaths become more labored.Â
âI donât know, maybe it would help her... breath better!âÂ
âWhat? Butââ Steve cuts Dustin off with a sharp look and he hopes the little egomaniac will just get the memo and get the fuck out.Â
âDustin, come on.â Despite being in the most imminent danger, Max is always and remains to be the only sane child in their group. The fed-up tone of her voice as she ushers Lucas up the stairs is enough to motivate Dustin to actually do what heâs told. Heâll have to thank Max for that later. God knows itâs tough to get Dustin to do anything, let alone something he doesnât want to do.Â
Soon the creaking stairs go silent and itâs just Steve and you, and Steve is standing above you like a moron again. You raise your head and he sees that youâre crying, which makes his stomach flip in a way that he does not miss. Every time you cried, which was actually not that often, it made him feel like his heart was being squeezed by medieval torture device; like the one that grabs your limbs and stretches them so hard you split in two.Â
âHey,â he says, though it comes out more like a whisper as he kneels down to be at eye-level with you. âJust look at me, okay? Focus on my face.âÂ
Your bottom lip quivers and Steve feels his hands tremble just a little, so he reaches for yours and pries them from caging in your legs.Â
âYou know how this goes. Look right into my eyes, okay?â
Itâs him that breathes a little harder when you follow his words. You used to really like looking into his eyes, though you would never explain why. He always thought your eyes were pretty.Â
Steve swallows. âUh, good. What do you see?âÂ
Weird questionâat least, it wouldâve been, had the two of you not rehearsed this at least three times before. Steve again feels a pang of guilt about calling you his problem. You were never anything close to that. He always loved helping you, being that person you could call on when you werenât doing so hot. And he called on you too, cause you were surprisingly good at making him feel better when he felt like shit. The only person he had to do that now was his reflection. All that stupid bastard did was repeat things Steve said. Not a great conversational partner.Â
You sucked in a labored breath and squeezed his hand a little harder. Your fingers were shaking bad and he squeezed back, hoping it would help out with that.Â
âChocolate.âÂ
Steve couldnât help the smile that came to his face, and it grew a little when he saw you smile back, even through your tears. âChocolate? Thatâs a new one.â
You laughed shakily and let go of his hand to rub at your eye. âWould you rather me say poop? Those are the only things I can think of that are brown.âÂ
âWhat about a tree? Trees are brown.âÂ
âThatâs the trunk. The actual tree part is mostly green.âÂ
You smile a little harder at him as you say it, and your chest is heaving slower than it was just a few seconds prior, so Steve knows heâs doing something right. He wants to hug you, since thatâs usually what he would do after something like this, but that tension is still there. It repels him like an electromagnetic field; as Steve thinks that, he almost winces. Heâs definitely spending too much time with the kid.Â
Steve clears his throat and lets go of your hands, rolling backwards on his heels to sit cross-legged in front of you. Your hands slink to their original position, interlocked in front of your legs. You stare at him behind your lashes, which sparkle with both shed and unshed tears.Â
âWanna talk about it?â Steve finally says, breaking the slightly uncomfortable silence. The remnants of your little smile fall and you look away, your head bowing somewhat as a heavy sigh leaves your mouth.Â
âItâs just... um. A lot.âÂ
Steve knows just what you mean, but he stays silent, hoping youâll keep talking.Â
âMax is so young. And sheâs been through so much. And she's just resigning herself to her death. Itâs just.. so fucked up.â Your voice breaks and you shut your eyes tight, probably trying to will those unshed tears to remain in their hiding places. It doesn't work, and they trickle down your shiny cheeks like rain on a window pane.Â
Steve is almost able to let himself believe thatâs the only thing bothering you. Almost. But he knows it takes a little more than worry and maybe a little dread to get you to a place where you quite literally canât breath, and he can feel that there is something else, prodding at your brain with the blunt edge of a knife. Not bad enough to kill you, but very much there, impossible to ignore. Â
When he doesnât say anything, you manage to look up at him. Your eyes change and you look a little sadder than you did just a second ago.Â
âWhat do you want me to say, Steve?âÂ
You donât say it in a way that makes him feel like youâre angry; itâs more like youâre truly asking him, what do you want me to say? The way you say it makes Steveâs heart jump again, makes him smooth his palms on his jeans. To make things worse, he doesnât even know the fucking answer.Â
âWhat do you mean?â What a fucking horrible response. Steve can see in your eyes that you think so too.Â
âI mean, what do you want me to say? Do you want the truth?âÂ
This time, Steve just keeps his mouth shut. He can see youâre getting worked up again.Â
âBecause, the truth is, Iâm scared that weâre all gonna die. Iâm scared that we canât make it through another one of these things, whatever the hell weâre gonna call these paranormal episodes. There is so much I havenât done, so much I havenât said. Fuck, Iâm not ready to see you die, and I know if push comes to shove youâd sacrifice yourself for just about anybody. I canât see you die, I just canât.âÂ
Youâre hyperventilating again, and Steve is trying to focus on what the hell he should do now. He wasnât really prepared for that sort of confession, even though itâs really not a confession, considering he would assume anybody he spends time with would not enjoy seeing him dead. But you havenât spent time together in months. The last time he had a real conversation with you, alone, you told him you never wanted to see him again.Â
The panic in your voice as you basically tell him youâre freaking out because youâre afraid heâll die is saying otherwise.Â
Steve feels his heart being twisted and stretched by the medieval contraption as he again reaches for you, but your hands are so tightly wound together  that he canât wrench them apart. Instead, he finds himself holding your face in his hands, his thumbs moving to wipe the tears that are again coursing down your cheeks.Â
âHey, listen to me. Youâre not gonna die. Iâm not gonna die. Max isnât gonna die. Iâm right here and Iâm not going anywhere.â His eyes search yours for any sign of this affirmation working, but he finds none.Â
âY/N, Iâm serious. Look me in the eyes. I am not. Going. To. Die. At least, not yet. I havenât even seen Ferris Bueller. It looks pretty good. I gotta stick around for at least that.â Steve smiles and heâs surprised when it only makes you cry a little harder. Heâs fucking up majorly right now. Maybe he should just close his mouth. Yeah, that sounds good. Just stop talking.Â
âSteve,â you manage, and you lean into his palms and you close your eyes, and he thinks to himself that youâve always been a remarkably beautiful crier.Â
âYeah?â His throat goes dry.Â
âI wish things were different.â You sound heartbroken as you say it, like youâre playing on frayed vocal chords. Your words echo in Steveâs head and he just gapes at you like an idiot. When you first started dating, he was a total idiot when it came to anything to do with you, and it almost hurts that heâs back to doing the same thing. That comfort he used to have with you has been replaced. Like nothing ever happened between you.Â
Youâve got him now. His heart feels like itâs about to reach its limit, and like he will actually be split in two, or maybe have a heart attack; one or the other. Steve almost asks What do you mean? again, like a complete and utter asshole, but instead he just stares back at you and scoots a little closer.Â
âY/N,â he whispers, but youâre not looking at him anymore. Again he tries to wipe the tears that fallâthis time, you raise your hands and push his off of you. Ouch.Â
âNo, Steve. Just stop. Stop.â The seams on his heart threaten to burst. You cover your face and it looks like youâre trying to hide yourself from him.Â
What does he do? Does he leave you alone? He really doesnât want to, but he wants to do whatâs good for you, which may be just going away. Steve wants to say something but the words just wonât come out. Finally, after sitting there in silence for a good 30 seconds, he swallows hard and moves so close to you that the tips of his knees are touching your shins.Â
âIâm sorry,â he says, very softly, like heâs afraid saying it too loud makes it real. This is a conversation he has not really ever had the desire to have, but he guesses it had to happen at some point. He couldnât ignore you forever. Well, he could, but he didnât really want that.Â
You donât move your hands, so Steve works up the courage to move them for you, and heâs surprised to meet little resistance. He doesnât let go of you, even though your glassy eyes spin in their sockets like marbles, still refusing to look at him.Â
âI wish things were different too.âÂ
A moment or so passes before you scoff, and sniffle as you rub your nose. âThen youâre a goddamn asshole.âÂ
Steve sighs, and smiles again, but this time itâs a much sadder one. âI know. Iâm sorry about that too.âÂ
You finally dart your eyes up to meet his. You look angry. Youâre rarely mad, which was something Steve would marvel at, seeing as he tended to have somewhat of a tendency to race toward anger when he was overcome with any sort of emotion. He was getting better at that, but it was still apart of him.Â
âYou really are an asshole,â you repeat, but you don't sound like you mean it anymore.Â
âI know. And youâre not. You deserve a non-asshole. Who doesnât make you cry so much.âÂ
That makes you smile. Heâs glad, cause he thinks staring at your distraught face for a second longer would actually make him explode. âProbably.âÂ
Thereâs not really much else to say, but Steve doesnât want this moment to end, so heâs thinking of more things he could blurt out that would make you smile some more. Youâre pretty easy to make laugh; you thought most of his jokes were funny, even when they were really, really, stupid. Thatâs actually what made him think you had a crush on him in the first placeâthat, and Dustin literally telling him that he heard you say you had a crush on him. For what itâs worth, that little asshole is a good matchmaker.Â
But before Steve can say something dumb, you open your mouth.Â
âWhen you broke up with me, were you actually telling the truth? Or... did you just make that up. Like an asshole would.âÂ
Steve takes a deep breath. âIt was true. Was. Nancy and I are friends now. I donât really have feelings for her like that anymore.âÂ
You raise an eyebrow. âBut... you did.â
He clears his throat. â...yeah. Itâs not like I had no feelings for you, in that way. I just... I knew it was unfair to hold you back with me when you could easily find someone that only wanted you. So I let you go.âÂ
A moment passes, and you smile again. âYou know, a real asshole wouldâve just kept me around knowing you didnât really like me that much. So youâre a sometimes asshole. Not a full time one.âÂ
âHey, thatâs not fair. I do really like you that much. Or whatever that means.âÂ
You pause, and the air goes still. Steve can tell that your breaths are a little labored, but the noise is nothing compared to the pounding of his heart as he realizes what heâs said. Itâs not really a secret, considering what had been said prior, but itâs still a scary thingâbasically confessing to somebody and just waiting in silence for their response. Steve has never liked that part of this whole dating thing.Â
âYou do? Or you did. Consistency is key.âÂ
Steve forces himself to keep his eyes on yours. âI, um. I do, as in... you know. I still really like you. Is that bad? I thought thatâs what you meant by wishing things were different. Was it not? If it wasnât, just ignore what I said, no worries, I get it, you knowââ
Heâs cut off by a laugh; a real one, not just a little giggle. Youâre a pretty crier, but when you laugh, god, itâs like the sky opens up and angels start singing Stairway to Heaven. Steve is pretty sure youâre not laughing at him, but if you are heâs honestly okay with it. Heâs just happy youâre doing something that isnât crying.Â
âHanging out with Dustinâs made you a dork, huh?âÂ
âYeah. The kidâs contagious.âÂ
You sniffle again, and you extend your legs so that theyâre on either side of his crossed ones. This way, you can get much closer to him; close enough that he can feel you breathing when you exhale from your nose. Steve hasnât been so close to anybody in a really long time; since he ended things, actually. Heâs been on at least a dozen dates, due to Robinâs pestering, but heâs never really enjoyed any of them.Â
âIt kinda sucks that it took you this long to realize you actually just liked me. You know that, right?âÂ
This time, Steve scoffs. âYeah. Iâm really sorry. Really sorry.âÂ
âI know. I forgive you. Partly.â You let go of his hand and raise it to his cheek, moving a strand of hair behind his ear. Steve always liked when you did that; at first, he found it slightly emasculating, but after a while he realized that it felt sort of good to be the one receiving affection, and not the one giving it. Being loved is super manly.Â
âIâll take what I can get,â he says, and it comes out much softer than he intended. The sound of his voice is strange to him; he sounds almost bewildered, like heâs asking a question instead of stating something. Truth is, he didnât expect you to want anything to do with him, not at all.Â
You smile a little harder, and lean in for what Steve is praying is a kiss, but you aim for his cheek instead. When you pull away, he canât help but look a little disappointed, which you catch immediately.Â
âDonât give me that, Harrington. I said I partly forgive you. So, no kiss. You can get that later, if you donât sacrifice yourself for Dustin or something like that.âÂ
Steve leans forward and gives your cheek a kiss of its own.Â
âI think I can abide by that rule. The kid doesnât deserve my sacrificing anyway.â
Some things never change.Â
Youâve always been too nice for your own good, always forgiving people who maybe donât deserve it; in Steveâs case, heâs pretty sure he wouldnât forgive himself, but heâs not gonna say anything to risk this miracle heâs been blessed with. Your skin has always been really, really soft, inexplicably so, even though you always brush off compliments Steve gives you on the topic. Youâre a hopeless romantic, always chasing love and affection and all the things that you should be given, because youâre awesome, and Steve doesnât think thereâs anybody in the world that really deserves you, let alone him.Â
But maybe itâs not always about if someone deserves someone else. Maybe itâs about if someone is willing to grow, to change, not just for the other person but for themselves, too. Maybe itâs about finding someone that makes you want to change. You are that person. And if Steve has a say in it, heâs never letting you go, never again.Â
Heâll be careful. He knows if he messes up again, youâre outta there. You may be forgiving, but youâre not stupid.Â
