Visiting Speaker report
Professional Practice/Industry Guidance
Your Name/Class Group: Jasmin Grant/HND2C
Date 23/09/20
Guest Speaker Details: Simon Murphy
To be completed, photographed or typed up and uploaded to Professional Practice submissions on My City
Identify an element of the guest speaker’s talk that resonated with you in some way.
After watching a video of his work, it showed he mainly shot portraits of strangers which is what we are currently working on. It was interesting to hear him talk about how he has self doubts about his work at times.
What question will/did you ask the visitor?
I asked him if he prefered to work alone or if he collaborated with others.
How do you think this will impact your own practice as a photographer?
I have a bit more confidence with the idea of shooting strangers. It was nice to have a bit more insight into how a photograph approcaches his subjects. His talk definitely helped with thinking about how i am going to shoot the ‘People make Glasgow’ brief.
Take notes during the talk – use both sides of this handout to answer these questions.
Say What You See
For this task we were asked to look around Kelvingrove and find an object or painting to observe and take notes about what we see.
This painting is of a young boy and a girl. The girl is sitting on the floor placing an apple into the basket that the boy is holding. They are surrounded by apple trees and grass. There are three white ducks amongst the trees. You can also faintly see the blue sky in the background.
The painting looks like it was painted with either oil or acylic paint. I can see this from the way the brush strokes are on the canvas.
Exhibition Review
Name: Jasmin Grant
Name of exhibition: Oscar Marzaroli
Location of exhibition: Street level photoworks
How does the flyer/poster advertise the exhibition?
The flyer folds out to display Oscar Marzaroli’s images as a contact sheet, on the other side is a detailed biography about Oscar along with more images of his work.
What is the suitability of the gallery space? How is the exhibition laid out?
The exhibition was laid out across two rooms. His work shot in Govanhill was seperated into it’s own room from the the other work he had shot.
How has the work been mounted? Is this appropriate for the work ?
The work was framed in either black or grey frames. They were printed in a varied amount of sizes, some images were grouped together depending on the subject, some images left to stand on their own.
Who made the work?
Oscar Marzaoli made the work. He shot over 50,000 images. His last roll of film that he shot has still not been developed.
Who did they make it for, who is the audience?
I got the impression the work was not commissioned which it was not. The work was mainly shot for himself but is definitely appreciated by those who grew up in Glasgow.
How does it make you feel?
I found the photos in this exhibition left me wanting to see more of his work. I felt like his images were cinematic in a way. I almost forgot that the images were not faked. These were real, raw images of people during that time. We live in a very different time and it was very interesting to see how Glasgow has changed over the years. It was also exciting to see how photography has changed over the years. He was able to take photos of young children out on the streets in their natural habitat, today you would now need permission from their parents to capture these photos. The images would be completely different.
If the work has a title does it make you think about the image/s differently?
The titles for all the photographs were just descriptive of what was in the photograph so they didn’t add much to the actual photographs. The exhibition itself was just called, ‘Oscar Marzaroli’ which is straightforward.
How would I describe it to someone later?
I would describe these images as black and white photographs which capture Glasgow during the 1950s-1980s in a raw, real and unique way. Definitely worth a look.
Does the photograph make you want to ask the questions, what are the questions?
The photographs definitely make me ask questions. I wanted to know how the photographer managed to capture these photos. The people in the photos look comfortable, some of them look unaware that a photo is being taken. This makes me want to know more about the photographer and his personality.
Is photography valuable? How do you know?
His work is valuable as no one really had access to it before.
Is the work for sale and who would buy it?
Yes, copies of the work were for sale in the gallery. I think anyone would purchase his work, especially Scottish people, particularly those in Glasgow.
What information is available about the artist?
The flyer and poster is full of information about his life, the staff were also informed of his background. Their website is also full of information about him.
Who organised the exhibition and who selected the work?
The exhibition was held at Street Level Photoworks in Glasgow. There were around 50,000 images to choose from for this exhibition, Oscar’s daughter donated these negatives for Street level to choose from as well as a university.

Practice shots / editing
As i can only edit on the my ipad at the moment, i have limited capabilities. The photoshop for the ipad doesn’t have a channel mixer so i am still trying to find ways to improe the infared editing. Looking at the photos on my laptop they look different to how they were on the ipad soi may have to send them back and forth when editing to check i am getting the right look that i want. I want to reshoot more mirror images and change the angle so i can only see white wall behind me, either that or photoshop out the door.
