Basic elastic band harp with 7 strings, the tonal difference is created by the angle of the harp itself. This is the most basic way of creating different tones, but these little box harps produce a surprisingly loud and pleasant noise.

A good source of inspiration and ideas for weird instruments, and how i could possibly scale up to something more grand.
Video about the work of engineer and sculptor, Alexander Weygers, and his biggest fan.
Came across this old inventor/sculptor from the early 1900′s, labelled by some as a modern day Da Vinci. An expert in sculptural practice and engineering, his work really is amazing and it’s baffling that he is so unknown. As a closet ufologist, it was really interesting to see that he had came up with a design for something that looked like a flying saucer in thew 1920′s, long before the ‘flying saucer craze’ that occurred in America from the 50′s onwards.
assembled all the bits together, it actually looks a bit better than i though it would, though it doesn’t sound like i wanted it to, i think this is due to the glue and caulk joining the boxes muting the reverberation, I also wasn’t able to build a system for tuning the strings due to time constraints. After the crits i am going to remove the strings holder and re-engineer it somewhat to improve the sound and functionality
Top photo is the painted weighted base, and rectangular frame which the strings will be attached to, below that is the string holders, with grooves carved out to keep the strings in place. The bottom photo is the actual body of the instrument, made of 4 polystyrene cool boxes joined together with glue and caulk. Initially i was going to load strings onto an opening at the top but the noise wasn’t big enough, hopefully this opening will allow the strings to reverberate over a greater distance.
This was initially going to be the rig for the top, onto which i would attach the strings, however after some testing i realised that it wasn’t really louder than just the single box, so instead i’m going to convert this to a weighted base, and run the strings along an opening going the whole length of the structure, hopefully resulting in a larger sound.
Joined the 4 polystyrene boxes together, now just need to build a foot for the base to weigh it down, and a rig on the top to hold the strings (which will be tuneable). Isn’t quite as loud as I was hoping but hopefully in the space it will echo as well. 2nd picture is the inside from above
