A tumblr special! Episode 2 of espresso quest, before it airs on Facebook!
Espresso quest, episode 2: Gravity/ Espresso and wine bar. Tucked away just where you can't see it if you're walking into Inglewood not knowing exactly where it is, Gravity is a sleek, modern, and, if the first few words on the list didn't convey it, very hip(ster(ish)). I first heard about it from my teacher, who suggested it after I let slip I was a coffee snob- and what a coffee snob's paradise it is. The walls are a uniform dark blue, the floors a marble, and all other surfaces either wood or art (of the buyable variety.(when I was there today, they were black and white photographs, of the _very_ good variety. They really suited the place)). The lighting was supplied by low lying, likely primarily decorative metal lamps, with large, zealously filamented bulbs; as well as higher, nondescript studioish lights. Lining the concrete ceiling are steel cable jacked, air conditioning ducts, and (I'm assuming) extremely cleverly hidden speakers. Anywho, the espresso itself: the crema was light, frothy(strangely enough), and highly acidic, much like the rest of the drink. The top was very dark, acidic, and nigh free of an aftertaste, leaving the throat in a strange "why don't I taste like death?" Kind of position. I have to wonder if that strange [mu] state was because of the coffee, or my years of coffee snobdom. After a bit, if you focus hard on it, you can get a tinge of espresso just above the epiglottis, if that makes any sense. In an uncommon way, the bottom of the cup is by far the most satisfying, having the most intense flavor, yet lacking the intense bitter that most espresso tends to have. It's warm in the way a sound is warm. In fact, it seems colder, thermally, than most espresso I've had. The beans were Phil & Sebastian, (a rather famous Calgarian business) merkuria from Ethiopia. After a second cup, I have come to the following conclusion: Crema: light to decent 8 Beginning: light to decent 7 End: strong 8 to a light 9 I got a bit frazzled by the second cup, so the score will very likely change the next time I go here. I highly recommend the place, albeit, seeing as they proselytizing serve Phil and Sebastian's, you might as well go there if you aren't crazy about atmosphere, &/or don't like or live near Inglewood.
