Sometimes dedication pages make you cry the most
The Brief Case (a story)
Forget it. Forget everything you’re about to hear.
This is the declassification of Keystone Project 145QXJ—the infiltration and extraction of one Mr. Salahuddin Grady. If you all can refer to the dossiers in front of you, you will see that Mr. Salahuddin Grady entered the unit at approximately 4:02pm on Wednesday, June 11th. He left a package in the corner of the room, and exited the unit at exactly 4:08pm on Wednesday, June 11th.
In that 6 minute window, we here at this agency lost access to our servers. It is of utmost importance that no one outside of this room learns of this fact. The very fabric of our nation, and frankly, our planet’s security rests upon the ignorance of everyone outside of this room to the fact that we lost access to our most sensitive data for six entire minutes.
Now, why you’re here, ladies and gentlemen, is for one simple reason — we have to know what Mr. Salahuddin Grady’s mission exactly was. It seems he accomplished it, but what exactly it was, is still being determined, and it will be determined by the people in this room.
Sweeping our entire system, we looked at every backup we had, and it appears that every single file has been retained, nothing deleted or lost, nothing at all added to or modified... except this one file, if you will direct your attention to this screen.
This gif file was exactly 2.24 megabytes in size on Tuesday, June 10th, and, after Mr. Salahuddin Grady had his six minute window, this file, and only this file, changed in size by 0.2 megabytes, bringing its size up to 2.44 megabytes.
People, our job over the course of these next several minutes, hours, weeks or months will be, to look at these two gif files, and find any discernible difference between them.
“Um... Director?”
Yes?
“It’s pronounced ‘gif’.”

What You Did There (a story)
She stood at the foot of the statue wondering what the hell it was.
It looked like a guy. Like, it had facial features, and he’s holding a gun, and the little marble slab at the bottom of it explained that this was Jerome Pendleton, the grand architect of the revolution that founded their little town of Breckston, but really — what the hell was it?
Chloe sure didn’t know. She felt the inscription but it was gibberish to her hands. Then, just because she thought it was hilarious, she looked left and right to check if the coast was clear. It was hilarious because she didn’t care to know, before she’d hop up on the statue, spray paint in hand.
She started feeling up the statue. That sounds gross but it wasn’t, she was just trying to get an understanding of what it was she was looking at. She felt the human form, but it was all out of proportion from what she knew. The shoulders at the top were bulky, the head was so much bigger than the torso, and outstretched in one of the arms was what felt like a third arm, only instead of a hand and fingers on the end, it had a hole. This must be some sort of mythological ocean creature with this extra tentacle attached.
Chloe hated it. With her little legs wrapped around Mr. Pendleton’s neck, she hung upside down and popped the cap off the whatever-color spray paint, and started to make a masterpiece of her own.
She sprayed wildly, sometimes forming words, sometimes just coloring in lines she thought were there, sometimes just holding it to create a little puddle of paint in just the maybe-wrong place.
After five minutes of what Chloe called “reckoning,” she climbed on down and looked upon her labor. It was all black to her, but it was still oh so beautiful.
She gathered her things and walked away, smiling to herself.
All she could think of was the folks who would come by this statue in the morning, and see the work she’d done—stray marks and scattered scribbles...on the statue of our town’s founder? No message or rhyme or reason, no protest or discernible image to make sense of.
It was the sweetest thought of all, to Chloe, to think of these people staring up at that statue, and, just like her, wondering what the hell it was.
What if there is no end?
Stories end... but only for a moment, only for a second to pause and reflect, but then they continue.
Life doesn’t end. There’s the time in which you’re setting everything up...the planting, investment, actions that will later pay off... then there’s a moment where those actions cease to be possible for you (a “death” to your agency), and what comes next is a forever fruit grown from the seeds of who you were... sweet or bitter
The “story”, the interesting bit, is just setup. God help us set ourselves up for a good forever.
You can't go back and change the beginning but you can start where you are and change the ending.
— C.S. Lewis
“But [Tumblr’s] value, of course, is more than just what it isn’t, and what it points away from. Despite all the drama and discourse lurking in its corners, it’s easy to make your own Tumblr life as simple and as happy as you want it to be. There are no algorithmic threats lurking around every corner, no onslaught of promoted posts from politicians or influencers. More than anything else, Tumblr in 2020 is a self-sustaining ecosystem. It’s a semi-sealed and increasingly fertile terrarium, a nigh-impossible perpetual-motion machine of a platform going productively psychotic in its isolation.”
— @areyougonnabe, “The Ever-Mutating Life of Tumblr Dot Com”
Let’s be honest, going productively psychotic in isolation is this year’s mood.
Tumblr is a hellsite but goddammit its our hellsite

At the #TwinsOfFaith Conference in Dallas, Shaykh Daood Butt one of the most impactful points he made was about the story where the Prophet (s) carried the things of an elderly woman who spent the whole walk bad-mouthing this man Muhammad, and when he finished, he went to leave, until she asked his name and he said it was Muhammad. He served her WHILE she was speaking ill of him. For all those who speak ill of Islam, of Muslims, those who speak out of ignorance, do we we engage with them? Do we serve them? Do we serve them with no agenda, with no purpose other than to fulfill our religion's call to serve humanity? Let us look the example of our Prophet (s) and let our actions speak more than words.
"There are no words, to explain..." An amazing concert from such a soft-spoken and humble man, but all I have to say is he is an absolute rock star. So grateful to have seen him live. #Yusuf #CatStevens (Peace Train...Late Again Tour, 2014)

"Don't ask if we've got it, just ask if it's in!" I accept that if I ever make a movie, I will never see any residuals from the country of Guyana. #boot #leg
Few days ago, I got to check out the Guyana National Library. Found some film books! (at Guyana National library)
Finally finished it. Very rewarding book examining one of the weirdest, most ubiquitous American things: television, and more specifically sitcoms. What we laugh at, what we spend hours watching, quietly begins to modify how we view the world--real life starts to seem like it shoulda been on TV, and we talk about our friends on Friends like they were really our friends. Well written, and very insightful. But wait, I can't read! *insert laugh track*
"Terrible Phone Camera Pictures From ICNA Convention 2014"
Alhamdulillah I had a lot of fun, and I benefited immensely from the message of our teachers and the direct access to these scholars. May Allah bless everyone involved for their efforts and may He magnify and increase all the good that came from this weekend. And may all of us who attended understand that this is now a fresh start, and the real work is before us, not behind us. As Altaf Hussain stated, “Conventions aren’t vaccinations,” the cure is in what you do afterward with consistency. Bismillah.
