Final project for 4d MSU class Music: http://www.bensound.com
Project 5
So initially, I wanted to create a box with a video screen to show two sides of a situation. Kind of like a “not everything is what it seems” thing. I then thought of making it bigger with two projectors.
As time went on, I ended up coming up with a different idea. Being in this class, I have learned that art is all around us. At first, I was an art person that saw art in drawing a person, or taking a picture of a landscape. It was difficult for me to do any abstract art. This class has opened my eyes to all kinds of art now.
I thought of using water and light as my idea for coming up with art. I used my iphone camera to capture moments of water and light mixing in different ways. I ended up slowing the video down with the slo-mo camera. When I slowed time down, there was a different side to light an water. We could see different shapes in the way light reflected with water. It was mesmerizing and beautiful.
For my installation art project, I want to do a continuation of my performance project. Walking around the campus I realized, living in the city there is some nature (birds chirping, smell of trees, rain, etc). But a lot of that noise gets muffled with the sounds and smells of the city (Car engine noises, train horn, people talking, etc).
I want to create a tranquil, “natury” area within the city using three of our five senses (smell, hearing, touch) This is an extension of my performance project because I had everyone close their eyes and have them imagine being somewhere else with me blowing air with a binder. It was relaxing.
I am going to use the space of Studio 199. This project will incorporate the performance project because I want to create that tranquil area and have the viewers close their eyes. Closing their eyes will make their other senses a little stronger.
Sound will be the different sounds of nature as a person walks through the installation. Maybe sounds of birds, a creek, or river. Using surround speakers will create a sense of walking through nature. Placing the speakers pointing down right on the path of where people walk so they can hear those sounds.
Touch will be feeling the ground below. Our feet feel the ground everyday the studio room ground is concrete. I would like to transform the ground by using sod or mulch on the ground for people to feel a different environment. It may bring a sense of being in a different place. Using a humidifier can also create that “fresh air” feel. Or being near a river.
Smell will incorporate different things. I think the sod and the mulch also serve a purpose of bringing in a nature-like smell. I also have seen online that mixtures of different essential oils can make a “forest” smell. A humidifier will also help keep and bring the smell.
I would like for my viewers to have their eyes closed during the walk-through of the installation site to also try to create the image in their mind. I would like to guide them through the installation that they they will not be too worried of where they walk and so they can feel more calm and able to immerse themselves in what is around them. This is why I will also not blindfold them. I would like for them to feel free to open their eyes if they want; this way they do not feel too stressed.
This project has a lot of elements but I am looking forward to making sure I can realize every aspect of this project. It is a big project to complete, but I believe it is “doable” I need to use my time correctly especially during set-up or else I could find my self not completing the project to the level I want to have it.

These are some screenshots of how I got my sample sounds. and mixed them for the video
This clip is one of the songs I recorded on my phone. It is what I used to make samples for the video project.
These are just some pictures of the process.
These are just some of the screen shots I used during my design of the project. I took more that 130 screenshots in different area of the spectrum. These are the images that were manipulated to the final shots. Some parts were essentially animated with about 20 screen shots just blended together.
Project #3
I would like to focus on abstract work with audio. Adobe audition has a spectral frequency analyzer that visually shows the sound in their respective frequencies along with their harmonic frequencies. It sometimes paints cool images. just like the one in this post. I would like to animate this picture to make it seem like we are walking through this spectrum hearing the different frequencies.
Adobe audition has a cool feature where you can highlight a certain location of the spectrum and only hear those frequencies. As we are visually seeing the other frequencies, we will also be hearing those bits in time.
It will be a challenge to animate the picture above but I am going to try to find the way to make it work. I like the top part of the picture because I feel like if you were to walk through the dark spots, it is like walking through a weird forest withe orange looking trees.
The way I am thinking of animating is maybe datamoshing, or possibly just using screenshots of different sections and animating those one at a time. Another option will be using maybe blender or another 3D modeling program to make an illusion of walking through the sound. Its going to be a little difficult to get the vision I have, but I am going to try my best to get there.
Performance project
Here’s an audio file of the song I came up with for the project. I initially wanted to play it, but I realize its hard for me to speak and play at the same time. It’s easy for me to sing and play but somehow it’s harder to talk haha. The title I put on this song is called frente al mar. I called it that because when I play it, I feel like I am at the beach. I feel like I can hear the waves and feel the breeze.
I will also add some pictures of my work.
I am also deciding to add some props to assist. I will not pull them out until the eyes are closed. I will be using the props to further supplement the idea.
Performance Project planning
Performance can encompass a wide variety of topics. Our bodies are the most important tool to performing. It is hard for me to pick something when we have limitless options. I did get some ideas and I am going to incorporate Marina Abramovic’s idea. I want to write a song (instrumental) that will give the listener feelings(positive I hope). Something relaxing. That would be my hands performing, I would also like to use marina’s idea of having people imagine things I say. I won’t blind fold, rather, I will ask people to close their eyes and listen to the music. With my voice I want to try to paint a picture in their mind. Try to get them to visualize something calming. Maybe a beach or an area they imagine they can relax in. The music will support me in getting them there to that location.
Self critique - I think this idea can work. I would like to make them picture what I want them to picture such as a beach, But we all think differently. I don’t want to tell them they are in a beach. I want to indirectly imply it. It may be difficult but I think if I write down what I want to say and memorize it, It could help. The music I write cannot be too suggestive either which can make it difficult. I have a wide range of instruments available But I want to limit it to a guitar to see how I can bring that image out. The whole purpose of my project is to make people feel good and relaxed.
Looking at the different artist’s artwork, I noticed great works that had different messages and told different kinds of stories. Although there were many great and interesting pieces, there was one piece from one particular artist that stood out to me the most. Paul Ramirez Jonas’s picture book (Ink on Paper Folding Book) — or what I like to call it, “A book of Life” — really stood out to me. It almost seems as if this picture is going through time capturing people’s different moments in their life. That’s technically what a photograph does, It captures a moment in time for us. The way Paul organized this book was interesting; for one, if it was closed up, it would look like a regular book. When opened, it seems to tell a story. There are different pictures of different people in different ages. The book extends out and shows many pictures. I like how it starts out with different pictures of children, as you progress through the pages, the pictures of people grow in age. When the book reaches the end, it has pictures of elderly people. After looking at all these pictures over and over, I begin to wonder, I don’t even know who these people are. I also felt like in the way these pictures were organized I felt like it told a story. Individually and as a whole. When I look at the pictures, I see some people smiling, others a little more serious, and some with a little smirk. I feel like I begin to attach myself to each and every person in those pictures. I feel like I want to know who they are and where they came from. I feel like I could lear from their experiences. I think I felt it a little more with the elderly people just because they have lived through so much and seen many changes throughout their lives. Its definitely one of my favorite pieces.
Interenvtion Art - 4D Studio Art Class
I really like the idea of “earthwork” or changing the environment around you to make people change their routine. to see things in a different light. We tend to get accustomed to the routine. Our life ends up being mundane. But if something around you suddenly changes, it can make people feel a different emotion maybe make them enjoy what they have around them. My idea is geared towards this. Walking down campus, I noticed the new pave stones that were placed. It made me wonder. Many people walk through this place on a daily basis. People walk to pass through or to get to class. But what if all of a sudden a maze appears. The pave stones are arranged in a way that creates a imaginary maze. Its not necessarily a series of walls but rather the bricks are painted or even a different color and placed in a way the create the illusion of a maze. Most of us look down when we walk; to look at a phone, tie your shoes, or if we drop something. That would be enough to draw attention to whats on the ground. Ive taken several pictures of the pave stones and want to see how I can create that maze.
Creating a maze is not too tough since its just making lines that make people move somewhere. What makes it hard is figuring out how to make it a temporary piece. Moving pave stones that are there might not be the best thing to do. I also thought about chalk but it may take quite a while. I was given the idea about using tape. Possibly a bright colored tape. It would help draw attention to the maze. Also possibly a message that makes people stop to look at it. The picture is a rough idea of what I want it to look like.
