Hackensack University Medical Center calls Uber to transport patients

The hospital partnered with the taxi service to smooth discharge and help patients and visitors who struggle with transportation.

This is an article about a partnership between a medical center and the popular transportation service, Uber, to transfer patients. I think this is a brilliant partnership and, supposedly, it it isn’t the first deal between Uber and a healthcare facility.

I like that healthcare providers are utilizing these new technologies that really help their patients. I feel as though this is the way that the healthcare field should be advancing with technology and society.

Boston Children's Hospital launches Amazon Alexa app KidsMD

The app, part of a broader strategy to make the hospital’s medical knowledge available to consumers, can offer simple advice about fever and medication to parents.

This hospital created an app to make it easier for parents to know more about certain symptoms. The app is compatible with Amazon’s Alexa voice service. I think that this is a really great idea. It gives people, in this case parents, more access to the information that they might not have had otherwise. It also saves the parent a trip to the doctor for something that may be minor.

Dr Shafi Ahmed will broadcast the first VR surgery today (Wired UK)

Robotic suregons are inevitable, according to medical virtual reality pioneer Dr Shafi Ahmed

Yet another medical procedure being live-streamed. Yesterday, Dr. Shafi Ahmed broadcasted the removal of a tumor from a patient's colon. Different from other live-streams, such as the periscope broadcast mentioned before, this was done using a 360 camera and was broadcasted entirely in 4K.

It's truly amazing how far technology has come and how people are utilizing the new systems and devices that are now available.

The article talks about a few of the benefits of this new broadcasting technique, with quotes from Ahmed, who seems to want to really utilize the VR technology. I agree with a lot of what the article says, and I like that this gives people who are interested for various reason a chance to experience something like the removal of a tumor or a colonoscopy, which was showed in the periscope broadcast mentioned in a previous post. VR is slowly making a grander presence in various industries, and healthcare could definitely benefit from this.

With the way that social media has grown, it can be a double-edge sword. It’s a great way to connect with friends, consumers and patients. It can also backfire if something were to go wrong. I think that this, coupled with the regulations that companies are to follow makes the leap to social media.

As social media and its applications in health care continue to evolve, it’s worth taking a snapshot of where we are today and where we may be headed.

I found this to be an interesting article that gives a few reasons on why the healthcare industry should embrace the increase in social media use among patients. A lot of the reasons are similar to a few of the other articles, but I like the conclusion on how the effect on patient outcomes are unknown, and how it is up to the industry to utilize social media’s power. I definitely agree with the last point, and I have faith that it’s use will be embraced in the coming years.

A playlist containing videos from a recent panel held by Amino, a company who helps people find doctors

This playlist from Amino contains the full panel as well as a few moments from the panel. One point that they bring up is designing the experience for people of different generations.

I find that remembering about these different generations may use a product is something important to remember, because the way that you advertise and design a product for one generation is bound to be different for another generation. 

Surprisingly, one of the members of the panels found no differences between the generations and their adaptability to their product, which I found surprising.

How Social Media Is Transforming Medical Care In The Developing World

As a physiatrist in a pediatric burn unit in Santiago, Dominican Republic, Dr. Carolina Camilo was frustrated. While she was trained in treating damage to nerves and muscles, and the other staffers in her office were qualified to perform surgery and give anesthesia, there was no one who knew how to prevent her young patients from scarring and losing the use of their burned limbs.

“I did not know how to use splints or face masks or special bandages,” Dr. Camilo says, mentioning just a few of what she terms the “creative” ways of intervening with burn patients to ensure their full rehabilitation.

Thanks to Facebook, and global health care training nonprofit Physicians for Peace (PFP), Dr. Camilo was able to get the necessary information to build her skills and help the children in her community who otherwise would not have had access to such care.

This is an interesting article. It contains an account from a doctor who was able to effectively treat a patient's burn through communication within a Facebook group they are a part of.

This is an interesting infographic from a few years ago showing different statistics on the use of social media in our hospitals and how helpful or harmful it may be. 

An interesting part of the picture to point out is the policies laid out in hospitals for the staff. Based on the statistics, the majority of organizations did not have a policy for social media, and it shows as the next statistic shows that more organizations had to discipline their employees when it came to social media.

This is definitely still prevalent today. Take for instance, the  controversy with Joan River’s doctor taking selfies while tending to her before her death.
