The Frenchman Jean Claude Bertrand organized the Cote d'Ivoire-Cote d'Azur rally in 1975 at the request of the pilots participating in the Bandama, another rally organized by Bertrand since 1969 on sub-Saharan tracks. The rally was only held in Ivory Coast and was extremely hard (no one finished in 1972). As the next rally on the calendar was Monte Carlo, the pilots suggested to Bertrand to organize between the two rallies one that would connect them and thus save the passage on the boat. Insatiable pilots in search of more adventures, blessed glory.
Jena Claude Morellet, alias Fenouil (pictured) was one of the pioneer pilots in this type of rally and scored in 1976 to its second edition with a KZ 400 ready to connect Abijan with Nice. As an outfit I wore the same one that I used to wear for the weekend excursion (sucks Furigan and cowboys) and a good Gauloises reserve. The following year Thierry Sabine also signed up with a Yamaha XT 500 and in the fourth stage he lost himself in the desert of Ténéré. He spent two days lost, to the limit, and to the third the organization rescued him. Far from denying that place where he had to suck up the stones to salivate something, Sabine returns with his friend Fenouil to Africa the following year, organizing in 1978 the Paris-Algiers-Dakar.
