Why does the n64 get so much hate for picture quality while the PS2 is even worse looking? PS2 had even worse blur filters because their all cheap software based ones. N64 doesn't have broken vram so games actually have color unlike the desaturated brown and grey games you find on PS2.

When the next generation of video game consoles rolls around will we still be compiling shaders?

It doesn't happen on consoles because those are fixed specs, so the shaders are sent down with the game.

Depending on how "open" the next Xbox is, you might start to see some shader compilation there, but they've been expanding their shader delivery tech lately.

If both Valve and Microsoft get better at offering pre-compiled shaders across a wider range of GPUs and all that, we might actually see the problem go away in the next couple years. I... have my doubts about that, but it seems possible.
