Today I studied some latin and read some of my favorite poems by Sappho. Now, the book I use to study latin is actually my high school textbook. While in school I studied latin for a year and ancient greek for six years (and both were mandatory classes to get into my uni) and today I realised that the reason why I don't hate latin like I do ancient greek is precisely because we only studied it briefly. Like, when I started both of those I was so excited to learn and the more classes went on the more i started to dislike them. It is so sad that the school system is actively turning children away from subjects they would have otherwise loved. I love sapphic poetry but I only read it in modern greek cause my very own ancient language is a source of discomfort and low-key hate. I don't know if this is a universal experience but it frustrates me to think of how many kids say they hate maths or science or a language because of how they are taught at school and how little we actually try to change it.
