As the days went on, Katara continued trying to catch her fiance's attention, he would only give affection in front of her father and that rose suspicions—especially in Katara.
She loves him but she wasn't stupid enough to not notice his actions. So she quit following him like an idiot an began to just focus on training Aang, and being the biggest help to the tribe, as always.
Aang sat clueless, he loved her, he did. He wanted her more than ever, why couldn't he have her?! He stared at the ground. "No Aang, just be the... The breeze that passes by."
He told himself, a figure appears behind him. "Hey."
Aang turned his head, Sokka. "Oh Sokka right?"
"Yup, uh- I heard you. And I kind of want to share something with you." he slumps down beside Aang, getting cozy.
"So.. Like before last week...-"
Here he was, training little kids as he usually does. When they suddenly began asking for drinks, being the amazing teacher he was, he decided to go get some.
On his way, he came across his sister's fiance whom he NEVER liked. Tanlik was talking to a friend and Sokka heard the mention of his sister, so he hid to listen.
"I don't like her, she's okay. Good in bed if you ask me, but she's infuriating. You'd expect her to be all to herself and not that lovey dovey. Eugh, anyways, Im just waiting for the day her dad puts me in a high position, then im gonna dump her. Worst fiance ever. "
Sokka was angry, but he knew better then to go fight him. So he just... Walked away. He became cold towards Tanlik, brushing him off and ignoring him. He knew he had to tell Katara but it was never the right time.
"Soo.. What can I do?" Sokka sighed, "my sister loves that son of a bitch. At least I think she does."
Aangs heart tightened, such a sweet girl so full of life. Yet her own fiance has nothing good to say about her, he was angry, he knew she deserved better, hell sh deserved the world an he could give it to her, he could give her everything she ever wanted! He could be the man she nee-
"Uhmm.. Avatar Aang?" Sokka coughed, waving his hand in front of his face.
"I- uh- yes. Sorry, I'd say wait it out, she's been busy with the trip to the northern tribe, let it wait."
Sokka agreed, both men decided to keep it to themselves.
Sokka was excited to go to the Northern tribe. He has fallen for Yue and they've been dating quite a while, an he's more then happy to see her.
Meanwhile, Katara stood the ships, holding a heavy box. She hears two girls talking.
"Ugh Tanlik should just.. Be with me. Im his girl, he hates Katara you know? He's just tryna move up. I hope it's soon. "
Kataras heart shattered, she clutched the box tightly and pretended she had just arrived, smiling widely. "Hello ladies!"
They both put on fake smiles and greeted her, she placed the box down and hopped off the boat, going into her tend and slumping onto her knees.
She wanted to cry, she was in so much pain. But she couldnt, no tears rolled down. She rose to her feet and stepped back out, assisting everyone but being so.. Out of it.
She walked to Appa and gently pet him. Handing the bison some food before petting him once more, Aang watched from afar as his lemur, Momo, stood on his shoulders.
"She's so wonderful.." he laughed to himself.
Finally the day arrived, Aang helped Katara onto Appa and she was more then happy. Giggling as she stared down, laying on the saddle on the bisons back.
Aang sat atop Appas head, his body turned to face her and he couldn't stop smiling. But when she looked? Oh he was just staring at the clouds—she knew he was lying.
"I can see why people love the air Nation so much, flying is so cool." she laughed, staring down at the small islands and the ships. Her heart full of happiness.
"Thank you, Katara." he smiled to himself, turning to face her completely. "Sooo tell me about your engagement."
"Oh! Well uh I've liked him for quite some time and he came around, proposing to me." usually when telling the storyshe would smile and laugh, now she can barely crack a smile.
His words hurt, his actions hurt, she knew the girl wasn't lying. Aang knew, from Sokka of course, he stared at Katara and bit his lip, lowering his head.
"Do you love him?" he muttered.
"Love?.. I.. Can I get back to you on that?" she whispered, her voice dropping to a low whisper. Her head turned to Aang, forcing a soft smile.
"You don't need to smile if your not okay, Katara." he placed his hand above hers, tilting his head to the side and offering a kind smile.
But the thing is, even if she wanted to stop smiling, she couldn't. He was so genuine and kind, her heart beated rapidly and her cheeks glowed a soft red.
They landed on the southern water tribe ship, Katara walked off to go meet with her father. Appa was resting on the boat, eating the food the tribe members offered him. Tanlik cleared his throat asking where Aang and Katara were, once getting directions he left to find Aang.
"Avatar Aang?" he called out, offering a kind smile. Aang leaned on the boat railing turned his head, returning the kind smile.
"Yes?" he questioned, Tanlik stood beside him.
"May I ask why you chose my fiance to go on that bison with you? You could've chosen Sokka." his kind facade cearly cracking.
"His name is Appa." he stated sternly. "And she's mentioned wanting to fly on him—not to me but she was taking to Appa while she fed him, he really likes her."
"Well look, she's my fiance. I don't want her alone with another guy."
"You don't even like her why does it bother you so much."
Tanliks smiled fell, "excuse me? "
"I heard you saying you were using her." Aang leaned on the boat, staring at his face with a cold expression.
"I don't know what you heard, but it's not true." Tanlik hissed before walking a few steps back.
"Tanlik!" Katara called out, running towards him an hugging him—not to far from Aang who watched with a pitiful look—she tightened her grip only for him to push her off of himself.
Katara didn't try to fight, she stared before sucking in a breathe and walking to Aang.
"We can go back onto Appa, I finished what I needed to do." Aang could feel the air change, he turned to face her and nodded softly. Both adults climbed onto the bison.
"Yip Yip." Aang said calmly, Appa slowly rose to the air still in sight of the boat. Katara kept her gaze on the sky, smiling as her eyes slowly shut, feeling the air brush through her skin an hair, she felt amazing.
She fell deep into thought, her lips parting slightly as she stared in silence. Laying on the Bisons back and thinking about her status with Tanlik. If he were to marry her, he would be chief. And that's exactly what he wants.
Now it all came to her and she realized everything, her heart filled with rage and her brows furrowed. "Katara?"
She snapped out of it, turning to look at the man who called out her name. "I uhm... Yes Aang?"
"Are you okay? You look.. Mad."
"No- i- yes no- yes! Yes I'm okay." he didn't believe her, pursing his lips he turned to face her, leaning towards her.
"Somethings wrong, do you.. Perhaps want to talk about it?"
Her lips trembled, what could she possibly say or do?! Her heart raced and she lowered her head, sniffing. "I just realized my soon to be marriage is... not for love but for...power."
Aang pauses, staring at her he slowly leaned forward and rested his head on his arms. "Why say that?"
"Sokka is supposed to be chief, but he refused it. So whoever marries me.. Is chief. That's what Tanlik wants, he..doesnt love me." she laughed, even though it ate at her.
She buried her face in her hands before laughing into them, Aang stared at her pitifully, gently rubbing her back softly.
"It's okay.. He doesn't deserve you. Sokka knew, he uhm found out a few days ago. He wanted to tell you just Tanlik was always around." Katara lifted her head and stared at Aang.
"Gosh.. Everyone knew before me huh?" she bit down on her lip and sighed heavily. Aang gently pulled her into his arms, rubbing her shoulder.
He had to admit, having her in his arms was amazing. It felt so right, like she belonged there. Katara just allowed herself to relax, a heavy sigh leaving her chest.
Aang gently rubbed the top of her head, feeling his heart ache slightly as she pulled away and fiddled with her fingers.
"Break it off? Maybe.. I'll have to see with my mom."
"Your really close to her, hm?"
Eventually, they arrived at the northern water tribe, an they were greeted kindly. Sokka went ahead and met with his girlfriend, Yue.
She was the princess of the northern tribe, and they adored each other. Here everyone was, sitting together as the chiefs and king made conversation with the avatar. Katara was sat beside Tanlik.
"Are you alright, my dear?" he asked, his voice laced with fake adoration. Katara didn't bother answering till he nudged her, asking again.
"I'm your fiance, answer me." he whispered into her ear, she lowered her head and rolled her eyes before looking at him and nodding. God she wanted to rip his face off...
Aang noticed from across the room, his head softly tilting and he smiled at her.. She smiled back. And Tanlik was not happy, at all.
He gripped her thigh, forcing a smile.
The meeting progressed and now everyone was chatting. Tanlik and Katara stood off to the side talking, and she was annoyed. Hurriedly excusing herself to her mother and he followed angrily.
"Mother!" she called out, Kya, her mom, turned her head and smiled.
"Yes my water flower?" Kya lifted her head, a soft gentle smile on her lips.
"I refuse to be betrothed to Tanlik." she sat in front of her, and her mother was taken aback. Tanlik sighed and sat down.
"I don't know what's came over her.."
"Oh dear.. May I speak alone to my daughter?" Tanlik nodded and rose to his feet, his face getting red from anger.
"Mama hes- he's cheating on me. I heard the girl and... He's using me to be chief. Sokka and Avatar Aang heard.."
"Well if that's the case,we don't want him to be the chief.. I'll speak to your father okay?"
"Thanks mama.." she sighed and let her head hang low. Her lips pursing into a thin line.
She rose to her feet and walked off allowing her parents to talk. Her father spoke to Tanlik, informing him that theyve stopped the engagement and he was not happy.
He was shouting, screaming, fighting and just exploding with rage. All targeted to Katara, she fought back, yet calmer? But still angry.
He shoved her and screamed into her face, she did back. Everyone gathered, watching with confused, amusement, and awkward expressions.
And that all changed the minute he used his bending on Katara, she grew livid. The two began to fight and he eventually used his hands, getting her into a chokehold and holding a weapon to her.
"Let her go." her father hissed.
"Get closer and I'll kill her." he grunted, stepping back, and back... And everyone was afraid to approach.
They stood not to far from the pond of the moon spirit, Katara began to panic.
"Tanlik, just let her go. She's innocent with this, just let her go." Aang spoke, walking forward but not to close and Tanlik stepped back, etching closer to the pond.
"You're all pathetic, I deserve to be chief! I fucking deserve it!" he screamed, his grip tightening.
Sokka stepped forward, holding his boomerang. "Let go of my fucking sister!"
He went to attack, yet Tanlik moved faster. Shoving Katara off and grabbing the koi fish, now everything was fucked.
People froze and some panicked, everyone flew into a state of sheer panic. "Make me the chief of the southern water tribe!"
