You have to pick a theme song for your current read main character? What is it??? 🖤 I’ve been editing and listening to the dark and moody but also upbeat @twentyonepilots all week, so it’s no surprise I’m picking one of their songs for this book. And while I’m desperately tempted to go with #heathens because, every single character fits that song, I’m going to go with the one I posted yesterday in my stories #heavydirtysoul 😂 not just for the title, or the lyrics, but the way the song changes it’s rhythm throughout fits this book so perfectly it’s fucking poetic. 🖤 This book guys. Oh my black heart! It’s dark. Violent. Full of characters beyond morally grey, these people are morally BLACK with a sliver of grey 😂 and the writing. Oh gods knives the writing. It’s seductive and rich, wrapping you in its dark tendrils only to jab a knife straight through your ribs. It’s gory. Gritty. Beautiful and haunting. And villainous. So villainous! What do you do help shake away a bad day? ☠️ Last night was rough guys. I’ve never been the target of a mob, and man, it’s not a good time. It’s alarming how people feel they have the right to bully you into agreeing with their world view, without even trying to understand my perspective. Or accept that everyone has different opinions. And worse, they went after this account, my Twitter, my Facebook, my blog. And they aren’t stopping. Even after taking down the photo, blocking the offenders and making my accounts private. Oh, not a single one of them followed me. So there’s that. Bullying like this, even in the name of righteousness, is hypocritical and awful. Anyway, I’m going to get lost in a book today, and try to forget how awful the internet really is. We’re going on a heist!!! But you had zero notice or time to prepare 😳 the first three things to your right is all you can grab!! What are you taking??? ⚔️ Oh boy. This is going to require some creativity because all I have near me right now is a sleeping puppy, a blanket, and my phone 😂 this is fine. Alright. Blankets can be versatile. Parachutes. Disguises. Tripping devices. Maybe even rope use. Possibly as a weapon. Alright. Phones are useful. Hacking. Flashlights. Calling an escape Uber. And the puppy. One would think this is a useful weapon, but this is Iyla, aka diva princess extraordinaire. So. She will either be helpful or demand to be carried everywhere in a fur lined pouch. If you could turn your enemies into objects, would you??? Why or why not??? And what object would you use the most??? ☠️ You bet your black hearts I would use this power!!! I mean. Only when they truly deserved it, but let’s be real, some people deserve to be turned into objects. On the bright side, I wouldn’t be killing them, and I’d get some killer jewelry out of the deal. Feels win win to me! ☠️ I actually loved how Teo turned people into objects she could use. Who couldn’t use a lovely mirror instead of a murderer?! #thebrilliantdeath is such a gorgeous fantasy read, with some serious Godfather undertones and a magic system I fully want to experience! I also LOVE how the magic was used to really explore the gender fluidity of the main characters. So freaking clever and beautiful!!! Mafia, magic, love??? Don’t miss this stunning read!!! What’s your favorite horror setting? 🌲 I love anything set in the woods. Maybe because, growing up camping and traipsing through forests was a common pastime. And, there is seriously something so creepy about being alone in the woods. Especially if there’s wind 😳 every time I walk through a forest, I always think it’s no wonder so many haunted legends came from these settings. They’re just naturally spooky! 🌲 Apparently Mother Nature is having a *really* bad day today. She’s decided to create a polar vortex, which, to be honest, is a fucking super cool name. Maybe I think that because I’m not there. It does sound cold. 🥶 But also, very sci-fi 🤘🏻 anyhoo.... What story would you want to see a dark retelling written for? 🧵 I think it would be super cool to read a Dante’s Inferno retelling from Beatrice’s perspective. She’s the reason Dante receives guidance, which means, in a way she’s his redemption. I think it would be fascinating to read her story. What she saw in him. What she witnessed as he made his journey through the circles of hell. Of course, I’d love any retellings of this story. From any perspective. I think there could be so many!!! 🧵 It’s Friday! What dystopian world would you want to wake up in? ☠️ Dystopian worlds are tricky! I mean, generally speaking, they’re terrifying. At least in some ways. And the ones that seem the most real are the most horrifying of all. But, I think as far as survivability, I’d take my chances Qaanaaq. You’d definitely have to be wealthy. And not cross any of the powerful elite. But the chance to maybe *maybe* be nanobonded with a polar bear?! Sign me up! ☠️ I finished #blackfishcity when we were in Tahoe and the story is still with me! Plus, sitting at the edge of the dock made it easy to imagine being on one of the arms of Qaanaaq’s floating city. Such gorgeous writing and a beautifully woven tapestry of characters that each slowly reveal their connection as the book moves forward. I just love when there is so much subtlety and nuance that it makes the end of a book breathtakingly spectacular!!! If you haven’t picked this up and enjoy adult dystopian fiction, give it a shot!!! What’s your favorite diverse read??? 🌈 Recently, I fell absolutely in love with all of the #diversecharacters in #reignoffallen and #songofthedead by @sarahmarshauthor ☠️ I probably loved them even more for making animals part of the characters cast, because let’s be real, I want a rambunctious little dragon like no ones business!!! But, I digress. Diverse characters make a book so much richer and more real! And I am loving seeing them more and more! #thegildedwolves I’m looking at you 👀 🌈 Admittedly I haven’t started this gem yet 🙈 but, I have heard that it is all about that diversity!!! 🙌🏻 and it’s in space! How can you go wrong with that?! I have this on my shelf to read soon!!! Favorite childhood story? 📚 I remember loving The Indian In The Cupboard when I was younger. That and Matilda were the books I remember reading the most. But, I have such fond memories of reading to my son. Anything Dr. Suess, all the fairy tales. The velveteen rabbit and the giving tree 😭😭😭 children’s literature is full of such powerful stories! 📚 I was thrilled when @harperbooks @jenmurfee sent me #theenchantedhour 🌟 it’s all about how powerful reading aloud to your children can be. I remember I used to read everything I read out loud, textbooks included, when my son was a baby. Language develops so young and the brain is such a mystery. Not only can this help develop their skills, I still have memories of all those times. Before he understood the stories, he would calm down and fall asleep to the sound of my voice. So precious! I love seeing and hearing all of your stories of reading with your kids. And even seeing them as part of your account!
