In honor of World Turtle Day, here's an update on Canuck. The turtle has been actively swimming in larger and deeper rehab pools, and is building muscle mass. Canuck has been eating well and passed a milestone last week - catching and eating live prey! For long-term rehab cases, we offer occasional live foods when possible to hone natural foraging skills. 🐢🦀 (at National Aquarium)

We have three new Kemp's in rehab that joined us from the National Marine Life Center. The patients, including Biddeford, are finishing rehab and should be ready for release next month. (at National Aquarium)

Canuck had a routine exam and weight check today. Current weight is 147 pounds. The turtle was moved to our main rehab pool to help stimulate more activity and build muscle mass. (at National Aquarium)

A team of National Aquarium staff had the honor of releasing 34 sea turtles on behalf of several rehab facilities from the Greater Atlantic Region yesterday. Successful mass transport & release events require a high level of collaboration and coordination to plan and execute. I'm humbled to be part of a network of organizations that continually strive to uphold the highest standards of animal care and welfare.
Our veterinarians have prescribed Canuck a cocktail of medications to treat his symptoms. His current medication list includes: •antibiotics •anti-fungal •GI motility stimulant •pain medication •probiotic •multi-vitamin •calcium
Canuck's diagnostic adventures began on December 27, when the turtle took a ride through Baltimore and underwent a CT scan. The results indicated Canuck's intestines were inflamed and that gas was present in several areas. 🚗🏨🐢💨
Our largest and most critical rehab patient is a 130 pound loggerhead named Canuck. Canuck stranded in Virginia, and came to us from @vaaquarium in November of 2017. Our team is treating Canuck for chronic gastrointestinal issues, and are actively working to diagnose the underlying cause.
