The Project:
The Lights on Cumberland Street project is an initiative that will create an art installation made of light bulbs on the ceiling of Beacon's sanctuary.
Beacon is a non-profit faith community hybrid in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. Beacon invites people of all ages to grow together through arts, learning, and faith. We offer opportunities for personal and community growth through secular art and literacy programs for children and adults, tending a vegetable garden that resources healthy snacks for its programs, and through gathering for weekly worship.
Kensington is a neighborhood rich with diverse voices, and Beacon seeks to be a gathering of those voices, a conversation comprised of neighbors from all directions, and animated by the art of our children, the wisdom of our history, and the generosity of faith.
This project is meant to visually represent not only our goal of being a beacon to this neighborhood, but our role as a space for creative expression and collaboration. We chose light bulbs both as a symbol of light and innovation, and for the way in which an industrial fixture reflects the aesthetic and philosophy of the neighborhood. Each light bulb will represent an individual donor, and like lighting a prayer candle on behalf of a loved one, it will represent that donor’s dream for this community. These donors will be recognized, along with their dreams and prayers, in community art project that will be displayed along with the lights.
Be a Light:
We need $3,000 to meet our goal and we already have $500 raised. We need your help to raise the remaining $2,500.
These funds cover the materials, an installation to commemorate donors like you, and an electrician to safely install it.
For every $20 donated, you will have 1 lightbulb designated as your light, a light honoring a loved one, or a light honoring one of the children of this neighborhood
If we do not reach our goal of $2,500, the funds you donate will still go towards purchasing and installing your lightbulb. The more lightbulbs we have (up to 150), the more visually stunning the art installation will be. If we are not able to fund the project via Indiegogo and local campaigns, funds will be returned to donors.
The Impact:
We want this project to reflect the beauty of Beacon's neighbors and the beauty of donors far and near who care about building community through the arts. Your involvement makes this project a community collaboration, which is a huge part of our mission as an organization.
