Site C doesn’t make business sense, say experts, and is in dire need of independent review.Last Thursday April 20th at UBC Robson Square, a panel of experts dissected common arguments in favour of Site C, a proposed dam located just outside of Fort St. John on the Peace River in northeastern B.C., noting the project could cost taxpayers to suffer losses of over $1 billion, presents major challenges to constitutional rights of First Nations, and that the increased power supply would outstrip projected demand.

B.C. Hydro pegs the estimated cost of the project at $8.8 billion, which would take B.C. taxpayers until 2094 to pay off.

Even with increased electrification of the economy, said Karen Bakker, UBC professor and Canada Research Chair in Political Ecology, demand for electricity could be met by conservation at a third of the price for a number of years. A commonly touted option of selling power from the Site C dam to Alberta to meet demand increases from the oilsands is not feasible, she said. B.C. would have to sell its power at over $140/MWh; Alberta could obtain enough power to meet its demands from other sources such as the Slave River Hydro Project at a lower cost.

Water Bush Camp was essentially a participatory event held at Carbon Lake BC. Participants brainstormed to produce a 7 year partnership grant application to SSHRC. Ideas generated included, “An annual Water Bush Camp. Community-led water monitoring. A regional environmental data information system run by and for First Nations. A Truth and Reconciliation Commission for the W.A.C. Bennett Dam.”

Hola and greetings! I'm Jesi Carson, a masters student at Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver, Canada. My thesis project involves collaborating through new media with some of the world's most inspiring grassroots community groups who are making big social change from the ground up. Basically, I'm into real democracy and jungle justice - taking change into our own hands. The Democracy Stories project started in Madrid, Spain. Los Madriles are the badass revolutionaries that I want to see running this show called Earth! My team and I, as part of Medialab Prado's #ICDemocracia workshop, began to document these epic stories of citizen empowerment (occupations, citizen-established public plazas, community gardens & more) using a transmedia approach. We captured audio stories from participant perspectives, panoramas, photos, film and we began to explore the use of 360 film for immersive storytelling. Now it's time to take this prototype to the next level! My first legit 360 film project is now currently in the works! I shot it last month in Kingston, Jamaica with the Life Yard family - a group of young Rastafarians who transformed a notoriously dangerous inner city neighbourhood into a community hub for organic backyard farming and youth empowerment through skill building and art. “The Tambourine Army, in seeking to equip their soldiers with the tools to fight and reshape the system, also held a teach-In on February 10 on the Sexual Offences Act. This was done in partnership with UN Women and the I’m Glad I’m a Girl Foundation. Led by Tracy Robinson, a gender and law specialist, the goal was to equip advocates with the knowledge and strategies to impact the current review of that legislation and related acts that’s currently under way in Parliament. From Healing Circles for survivors to people across Jamaica from all walks of life wearing black as a show of solidarity to Teach-Ins, to the Survivor Empowerment March, this is the kind of coordinated advocacy and activism needed to wake us out of the apathy. An exploration in creating narrative flow in 360 and guiding the viewer through creative motion. Our strategy was to always aim camera one on the same person, to experiment if we could create a less jarring transition from one scene to another if the characters remained in the same position.

The Dregs tells a story of gentrification, deadly drugs, and cannibalism in the Downtown Eastside

A new drug called listo hits the streets of the Downtown Eastside. Shortly after, people begin to disappear. Around the same time, an upscale restaurant called La Mancha opens up and is quickly busy with wealthy patrons riding a wave of gentrification through the neighbourhood. Then Manny goes missing. At first, our protagonist, a weathered old man named Arnold, doesn’t think much of it. He figures his friend will turn up soon enough. But when Manny doesn’t, Arnold quickly grows obsessed with tracking him down.

Having taken on an independent study in VR, I’m excited to be a part of ECUAD’s first 360 video book club-esque weekly meetup, at the suggestion of Sean Arden from the PMP lab. Sean has introduced me to the VR/360 community here at the school, and they are up to some pretty wild experiments! Looking forward to this Thursday’s meetup, where we’ll discuss “The Fight for Falluja” a 360 documentary short available via the New York Times VR app.

Before I get into my reflections on the short, I’ll run through my first encounter with Samsung / Oculus Gear, which I have on loan from the lab. Super rad that they’re letting me borrow stuff, by the way! Feeling more empowered to experiment now. 

To set the stage, I am a Mac person. As it turns out, the Samsung Galaxy phone is pretty sweet, easy to navigate and I was able to find the NYVR app quite easily. Having experience with Google Cardboard, I easily opened the film in the app and was all excited to plug into the Oculus Gear headset and start watching... However, Oculus has outsmarted me! When you plug in, you’re navigated away from your Cardboard enabled app to a custom home screen where you ONLY have access to proprietary Oculus apps. BOO!

Ok, so there’s got to be a way around this, but for now, a hack courtesy of this funny dude on Youtube. Thanks dude! 

Seated on a swivel chair in my living room, I watched almost the entire film without removing the headset due to nausea. There is a lot going on in this film!
