My goals in this course will be to know more about the basic skills that look unnecessary but actually can make the design look good and meaningful. It means that I want to make the design look professional even though those skills are simple, easy to understand or unnecessary because sometimes those basics details can affect the whole design and can affect people’s perspective or emotions. Also, I want to know that design is not just drawing, colouring and animation but something that means a lot to others with inspiration. Lastly, is that I want to explore the importance of how design can change the world since people are now seeing Design as one of the major factors in our lives.

What I’ve learnt so far in this course is that I’ve achieved some basic skills, gained and received information about design from the lecture. This proved that design can really change the world in many unique ways. On the other hand, this course made me became a better person because it made me think deeply and strictly with my design.

The Swiss-style movements that how the design are made. It looks simple but it is not easy when you are actually making it. Creating a design layout is not an easy job, I need to think critically and carefully because it’s challenging and I found it attracts me.

The pin-up or exhibition activity made me think that design isn’t only about expressing a person emotions or ideas but about togetherness. With the exhibition, I can know each other feeling about the design, since the design is not only about me but us.

With Andy and Kareen’s help, I could be experienced and explored lots of new things or activity that I could never to do that. One thing that I want to explore more about is typography. The reason for that is because typography takes me to communication design, which interested me the most and made me wanted to learn more.

// FINAL REFLECTION //

Recalling on the few past months of communication design class has been a spurt of new introductions and exposures. Today, as I stood around the exhibition, I could feel the transitions and process I’ve been into for the past few months. When initially beginning this class, I was oblivious about everything. I didn’t know what to expect nor do I have any expertise in any of the computer programs. I was basically just a girl who had a goal to be more familiar with the basics, to learn the foundation of design, and to go over the limitations. Everything was new to me, but through them, I was able to not only grasp different concepts and topics, but to also apply them in my projects and assesments.

I’ve achieved my goal, but more than that, I also found a community. Through different trials and errors, I was able to connect with a community who understood what I was going through. I was able to receive helps and encouragement from my fellow classmates and I was also able to grasp different concepts and aspects from the lecturer. From an example, through the lectures, I was able to discover new topics that I wasn’t even familiar about. I got to learn the impact and transitions that each period of times (Post-Modernist and Modernist) had to become the advanced technology that we have now. From clay tablets, to sign languange, to print computers, and to more advanced technologies, it clearly shows the influence that the history holds to continue build up the process and methods of design.

Each activity also allows me to enhance my ability to go over the limitations and to know of the concept in depth. These activities also depics the topics on lecture but shown through physical exercises, teamwork, and discussions. During the activity of typeface, I was able propose different ideas on how to visually represent each alphabets by just using a limitation of shape and colour. It might seem like there would be a limitation of tehniques, but through the team discussion, I’ve come across unanticipated methods that made me realize that it was possible.

Through the zine, I was inspired by my creative who has the motive to tell stories through the shots that she captured. It made me reflect on how I want people to perceive my work task and also encourages me to challenge myself in creating design that tells stories and emotions. Zine had also allow me to be more personal because rather than just being dependant on technologies, I was able to have a better hold on the manual process. I was able to make pop-ups and cutouts that created the whole zine to look more complete. It was an interesting process to see the collaboration of manual and technological process. Tumblr had also unexpectedly open my eyes to maintain a weekly reflection on topics covered in both lectures and workshops and also a reflection through my process of thinking, trials, and errors. Through my constant posts, I was able to become aware of the possible errors i could come across and to have a wider range of creativity.

I think this course opens a new beginning to me as someone who was oblivous to everything to be someone who is now more prepared for the future semester. I’ve come across a point where I’m in this vicious cycle of comparing myself with other designers. However, as time past, I started to appreciate other designers’ work and to be inspired to learn from them and to be different. Most of all, this course open my eyes to new experiences, trials, and errors to inspire most of my creativity.

This is the final product of my zine which I am proud of because through all the process that I had, I was finally able to create the final zine.

The process and trials really thought me to be cautious of different areas that I’ve never thought would be a problem before.

I wanted to make sure that I will be able to display my creative’s personality which is full of stories, bubbly mood, as well as creative. I mostly used the colour of pastel pink, beige, and baby blue. Through using these colours, I was able to make the mood that is also the mood I see coming from her portraits. I think that the colours connect together with the portraits that she took.

From talking to her, I could see that her goal in every picture is to be able to tell stories through them. Knowing this, I want to create one page which could succesfully show what she wanted to say through the picture. Thus I created the pop ups that depicts the transition through the shots that she took in three different events. I was happy once I made those because I felt like I was able to display her goal in a visualized zine.

The cut outs, pop-ups, usage of colour, and display methods of photographs, I was able to show the personality of the creative and utilize them in the best way.

This class challenged me to try different ways I can to display my illustrations and ideas. Also, I got to learn to not be afraid of the errors because through those, it is actually the aspect that made me improve and create the final product to as precise as I wanted it to be. I also learn to go over my limitation and trying different ways that I would have never thought I could have done before.

the process to make copies of the zine.

it was a fun process to make copies of zine that I could share to my friends. There were many trials and errors in which when I cut them, it is sometimes not proportional with each other. Similarly, there are also some pages that are not cut which creates inconsistent cuts and spacings.

some of the changes that i made was the cover and the middle pages of the zine. I added another cover on top of the previous cover which makes the zine looks more fun. Not only that, but i also changed the whole design on my middle pages in which I got rid of the two big images and created a pop up where it shows a progression through the snaps. I thought that this is a better idea to present the personality of the creatives because one of her goal through her photography was to tell a story. I think that by making a progression through pictures, it shows more of her personality in the best presentation.

from my trial before the real final, I’ve also learned the errors that I continuously made and something that I had to be cautious for my final one. I’ve learnt that my cutting through the pages have always been inconsistent. I think that through the process that I’ve been doing, I’ve learned the errors that I have faced for the past trials that I’ve been doing and I am now more aware of things to be cautious of for my final one.

This is how my zine looks like on a A3 piece of paper which actually looks better than I thought. it was satisfying when I finished everything and began to create the zine itself. I had a hard time thinking on what would be the best way to display my creative’s photo work because I want to create it in a way that also shows her personality and the personalities of the picture. I’ve decided to show some on bigger scale and some on a smaller scale

this is how my zine looks like. After making it into a zine, I actually liked how it looks simple and eye catching on the photographs. However, I’ve found my zine to be on the wrong order which then allows me to re-made the orders so that it won’t happen on my final one.

I also do think that I succesfully created the personality of both the creative and the photographs which gives that aspect of asthetic, fun, and flowery. However, looking at my zine, there are different aspects that I want to improve and made better. I’m planning to make the cover look more fun as well as changing the pages full of pictures into an empty canvas in which I can put in pop up progression pictures that my creative took to make a more diverse and a strong visual to illustrate my creative’s work

•practice zine making•

during week 10 workshop, we were taught how to make two different types of zines. One is an eight page zine while the other one si a sixteen page zine. When i tried making the zine, i actually thought that it was an easy process that is easy to be understood and done.

However, when we tried to make the zine using real images and texts from our computer, it was harder than I thought because there are many steps that need to be understood to make a proper zine. for example, I had a hard time printing in which the pages are not printed back to back which then creates two different piece of paper that makes the whole process harder. Another trial that I had to face was when the pictures are printed on the wrong order which then creates an inconsistent orders on my zine which is not how I wanted my zine to look like.

From this process, I’ve learned that there are so many steps to be taken (more steps) that i thought to create a proper zine. I was also more prepared on the idea that I would have to print my zine for the assessment a couple of times to create the final one. I was more prepared for the mistakes and errors that I will encounter once making the zine.

When I first heard of this assessment to interview a creative who inspired me, I right away thought of Natalia who was an upperclass woman from my highschool. I right away message her, asking if it’s alright for me to interview her, which she gladly replied right away with an approval.

Natalia is actually studying master of psychology and photography is a hobby that she does aside from her study. She has been a creative that I really look up to since highschool because although this is not her major, she’s a really great photographer! she learned everything from practices and trials and it’s just really cool to see the different props that she used to create the different types of images.

I respect her perspective on photography which she wants to tell stories through picture; through the loudest laughters, the quiet whisper, the happy tears, and the merry cheers It’s also cool how she created these emotions through the snaps that she capture which then depicts a story to be remembered.

I’m so excited to be able to create a zine for a creative who I really look up to since highschool! It’s also cool to ask her as a creative rather than an upperclass man who graduated from my school!

//week 8//

after the lecture on post-modernist, we actually had an activity in which we focuses more on the manual methods to design which we searched through different magazine and books to form out letter or anything that we wanted to create

This exercise really reflect me back on post modernist and understanding their concept even deeper because I was able to practice the different methods that they used which mainly focuses on the manual methods to desig. This activity also allows me to take a little break from any technology and its programns and to just really do it all manually.

overall it was fun and fresh because it had been awhile that I do things manually since it has always been focused on illustrator, indesign, and etc. It was a good break from the usual routine

// 10 ways to promote slow fashion //

I wasn’t really familiar with the idea of slow fashion before this class. However during the discussion and group activity, I got to go deeper in what it actually means. The topic is very interesting and the idea of the advantage of slow fashion. It makes me reflect on my reflex to buy clothes whenever I walk around in the city. I started to ponder on the idea whether it was somethinf that is needed or purely just for my own want. It also makes me want to learn on how to be wise in picking and buying things. I have to be more thoughtful before buying anything.

I had so much fun in my special class today because it is a simple activity but it actually requires thinking, creative ideas, and also teamwork!

we were assigned into different teams and we had a little competition on whose “tower” is the tallest using spaghetti and one long piece of tape.

It was actually funny how our team didn’t really plan on how we’re going to do it and we kind of just discuss it while we’re doing it without a plan. Ours was actually the tallest one because we just did anything that we could to maintain the height. However, since we didn’t put any plan behind the activity, ours was also the first one to fall.

From this activity, it actually gives me a connection to communication studies which then helps my ask me question project. It makes me process the thought that I should try different ways to show the zine so that it reflects the artists’ work the best.

// lecture on Post Modernism and Bauhaus //

Post-modernism is a philosophical movement that arose from the Western society from the 19th to 20th centuries. From this lecture, I didn’t know that the role of modernism in its influence on art was that huge. Post-Modernist is a movement that is against modernism’s uniformity and lack of variety which then it starts to introduce on the idea of shapes using irregularity and a mixture of older styles.

this period of time allows more freedom in many different aspects including art. It breaks the boundary and limitations that people created and it allows a broader and wider range of freedom which then creates different form and types of art.

Also, from this lecture, I’ve also learned that it allows the combination between conventional and unconventional mediums which create work that utilizes more of different style and collages.

It was also my first time hearing about Bauhaus which was part of the German modernist movement. They focuses on simplicity which then breaks down into using simple shapes amd little usage of colours. This is the style of Bauhaus which then makes them very distinctive and therefore, easy to be recognized.

it was fun thinking on different ideas on how to display the word “falling” in the best display. I actually had a hard time trying to intrepet the meaning because I had so much ideas in my mind on how to interpret it but it was hard to put it on one tile and illustration.

// week six //

this week, we were given limited amount of shapes to create alphabets as well as typeface.

For the alphabets, we had three parts in which we used one colour, then two, and three. This activity allowed me broaden my knowledge and ability to find different ways to create each alphabets with just one shape. It’s really interesting how everyone from my group have different thinking on how to display each alphabet letter. However, it was also to cool how we all work together; sharing different ideas and agreeing on which one would look the best.

•pieface• was our typeface which I really love because it looks simple yet pleasing to the eyes! I also love the colours that we used because it’s very fun and popping type of colours!

Last but not least, it was really enjoyable to go around the class and see everyone’s display because although there are some similarities, there are so many aspects that I didnt even think about! There were so many that surprised me because it never came to my mind!

I found this activity really fun and helpful because I got to broaden my view on how to display different alphabets with just limited amount of shapes and colours! It made me think on how to use them wisely and with a purpose!

//week four//

“hello, my question is...” : what qualities make a good designer?

this project got me to be able to apply the concepts that I have learned over the past course classes! I challenged myself to find a lot of different items to be able to create this sentence which was actually harder than I thought! The more I try to find objects, the harder it was to actually find the alphabets that I wanted.

Another challenge from this project was to make an “open” question that doesnt have a dead-end answer or a question that has the potential to be brought up in a discussion. Although I had a lot of questions, it was hard for me to pick one and making sure that it would work the best out of the rest.

The problem that I had with this project was to capture the whole sentence because most of my objects are in bigger size so it was hard to put them all together since they took a lot of space. I tried different aspects but that one came out the best :)

from this project, I’ve learned on how to deliver my project in a way that would look aestheticly pleasing but also delivering the questions itself by the objects that I chose. It feels good once I put everything together!

It was actually fun learning on how to make badges because it had been something that I’ve always wanted to learn! I had so much fun photo hunting around the city to capture snaps of my badge!
