Career wise, I’m lost…
Hey friends, long time, no talk! I’ve just been in a weird phase in life of being 26 and finding my passion within the media industry. I went from wanting to become an entertainment journalist, to radio host, to local television account exec, to sales assistant which is my current position. Nothing wrong with being an assistant, but personally I’m over this role. I want to be important, a somebody, not the “help” and someone more important and not overshadowed. I want to attend networking events because I’m someone who can help others.
I’ve been looking into Public Relations, but I feel like I would prefer to be more of a community outreach for local small businesses because I love helping entrepreneurs become successful. Helping people has always been my passion, but not in a personal assistant, help you make more money while I make significantly less kind of way. More in a we both make tons of money doing what we do! I just feel so stuck at my job right now. I stay because it’s not super toxic, and I’m stable with knowing I still have a job. I still live paycheck to paycheck, and could probably never do things I’ve always dreamed of with this “career”.
I don’t want to be a content creator because I’m not consistent and I go through waves of not wanting to post, even just scroll on my timeline. A blogger would be best, but it would be sporadic, ya know? Like tonight. I didn’t plan to blog about this. Lately, I’ve been having difficulties opening up, afraid the wrong person will read it and perceive it incorrectly. In layman terms…my colleagues. 😅 I don’t want to get fired for venting 🙄 I think about my goals, and I just know this job financially won’t allow me to reach them. I must elevate to something better and more fulfilling.
I’m giving myself until February 1, 2023 to find a new role. Not just any role, but a leadership role where I’m in a room filled with other leaders. That will give me three full years at my current employer along with experience! God, if I could get anything sooner…I will gladly accept that as well. I just want to be happy all around. I’m in a happy, healthy relationship with my boyfriend - now I just want to be happy with my occupation.
Just gotta keep goin’.
xo, jess.
2 years later and I feel the same way, but it’s a little different…I’d call this version the remix! Good news, I got a better job that I’ve discussed - the sales role. Bad news (not really) I resigned.
Then I moved with my boyfriend (a new guy, not the one I was referring to two years ago, lol) cross country and out of panicking that I wouldn’t find a job ahead of us actually moving I made the choice to go BACK to being a sales assistant after six months of being free from feeling like crap.
I wish I didn’t double back because I feel the same, even worse because in July this will officially be my 5th year as an assistant. Unfortunately the new job definitely makes me feel like I will be an assistant only ever unless I want to do 100% commission again. Absolutely NOT. I’m done with sales.
I’ve redirected my attention to Public Relations, however, no longer seeking Community Outreach roles. I’ve been refreshing my memory along with learning new skills to provide the skillset needed to become a Communications Specialist. I’d direct my focus on external communications which is what the public can see compared to internal. If I have to juggle both internal and external…let’s hope that salary is an ethical number. Seriously. I may not have much PR experience, but best believe I’d be stellar and worth the wages rewarded.
I’m actively working on igniting the passion I have to write so that younger Jess will be proud. She’s probably really proud of what I’ve accomplished so far, but she knows she can work hard for the life she truly wants to live. She is disappointed that she was always discouraged by rejection instead of being fueled by it. At 28 going on 29 she is beginning to relive her dream of becoming a known name in the world of media like she planned…just not as an entertainment news reporter.
Advice for anyone who reads this and myself: Don’t ever allow anyone to dim your light. You know exactly who you are and what you deserve. Block out all negativity and toxicity and have tunnel vision until you see the vision. Don’t stop once you’ve made it to where you want to be. KEEP MF GOING! It can get much better if you do!
