i think this album has definitely earned its fair share of criticism when it comes to the lyrics but “you finally left the table/ and what a simple thought/ you’re starving till you’re not” is just great. it works on so many different levels. the imagery of two people on this hollow date slots perfectly with the earlier lines in the verse. it’s self-referential (rwylm). it’s simple but effective and thought provoking. i wish we had more of that and less of… “a fat ass with a baby face”

the “she has no sex appeal” & “she should have arched her back” comments about the latest tloas cover pissed me off. she isn’t trying to pose sexily. she is clearly miming exhaustion leaning against a wall in a grimy backstage setting. she looks hot still because this is taylor swift wearing a sexy showgirl costume, but the photograph is trying to communicate something beyond “look how good my butt looks in this outfit”

i enjoyed all the covers, but if i had to pick a favorite shot, this would be it. this is a very evocative, sensual and even a little disturbing image. her shapeless looming shadow, the rows and rows of empty seats, the harsh stage light contrasting with the dark theatre and the look on her face. i am pretty sure this is meant to be taylor clawing her way to the stage, perfectly capturing her drive, her ambition and her commitment to her work. for the last couple years, taylor has been "in the water" quite often. she was clinging to her piano in the middle of a stormy sea in the cardigan music video. she was submerged in a sea of her tears in the eras tour visuals for my tears ricochet. she was drowning in the blue nile in guilty as sin. her rain-soaked body was shaking in the black dog, and the list goes on. in this photograph, she is dripping wet, straight out of these turbulent times in her life, climbing and crawling over the empty theatre seats on her way to the stage and success. the spotlights are on, almost beckoning her forward out of the darkness. her stance is awkward. she isn’t taking the easy way, but actively overcoming obstacles, yet her gaze is directed straight ahead, laser-focused. she looks positively ravenous. call it girlboss feminism, but i deeply appreciate the biggest female celebrity in the world being unapologetically ambitious and success-driven and reflecting this in her art while not downplaying the kind of hard work and dedication it takes to get there. it is frightening, as she titled this image, but that should not deter you from chasing your goals. this is a perfect photograph. dare i say one of the best in her career.

i have been overwhelmed by information overload but my one concise thought for the night is that i assumed the podcast episode was going to be a scripted and carefully edited 20-30 minutes promotional piece… instead we got taylor yapping for 2 hours and like 20 minutes of it was about sourdough bread and at some point she mentioned they had a harness for her dad i love her😭

in the honor of cruel summer surpassing three billion streams, i have to say the most satisfying thing about it becoming this mega hit is just how badly it disproves taylor’s detractors, especially the criticism that she isn’t a great performer with insane stage presence. this song was nothing. an album track from one of her not that successful records. it did not get pushed as a single until well after it started blowing up, and it did not get promoted even as it was sent to the radio. to this day, it doesn’t even have a lyric video. it became one of the biggest songs of the century simply because taylor opened her tour with it. and she was so magnetic, so electric on that stage that the audiences were captivated by her performance. she didn’t have any backup dancers, she didn’t perform an elaborate choreography or stunts, she didn’t rely on stage props. it was just her natural stage presence and an incredible song

i think the “i remember” at the beginning of question…? continues to be the biggest mystery of taylor’s artistic choices like why in the world would she reference out of the woods of all songs? was she simply being a troll? was she trying to throw people off the scent? is it some inside joke? was she just trying to situate the song at a certain point in time? was she trying to maintain plausible deniability? what’s wrong with her?

another thing that completely fucked with my head and nearly ruined my life was to learn that taylor wrote the lines “from when your brooklyn broke my skin and bones/ i’m a soldier who’s returning half her weight” for all too well. that she eventually scratched them out but kept maple latte as the secret message. those who weren’t there were too busy running their mouths about how she “faked” the lyrics of the ten minute version, but i unfortunately almost had an aneurysm at the time

thank you, that’s very kind💓 that being said i really don’t consider myself an expert on sabrina. i was just giving my opinion. if anything the number of actual sabrina fans telling me that i’m “so right” etc. made me vaguely embarrassed that i really only listened to like two albums of hers front to back, and i basically never revisited emails i can’t send. i will definitely amend that though and will be seated for man’s best friend having done my research. her fandom seems very nice, her pen is clever, and she is not afraid of taking risks. i’m really excited to see where she goes next

This isn’t a new theme for Sabrina either - it’s crystal clear in ‘Please Please Please’ that the narrator knows full well she’s going to be embarrassed by this motherfucker. Ditto the bonus track ‘Bad Reviews’, where she hears all her friends warning her about this loser, acknowledges they’re right, and then consciously chooses to be stubborn about it anyway. I’d be quite surprised if you weren’t bang on about ‘Man’s Best Friend’ being a deeper dive into that complicity, because she’s already set it up!

oh here’s the funny thing, i am mostly in the periphery of the sabrina fandom. i loved manchild (evidently lol), i listened to short n sweet front to back a couple times when it came out, but afterwards i picked my favorite songs and mostly kept those on rotation. i’m pretty unfamiliar with her back catalogue as well. i only know her popular songs and a handful of album tracks. a lot of people have been mentioning other lyrics/songs in the tags and reblogs since that post started sorta blowing up, and i think i only vaguely recall one song they mentioned. even from the ones you bring up, i obviously know please please please, and i agree with your analysis. the opening lines are pretty much a contradiction with the rest of the song. she insists that she has good judgement, and she has good taste despite what everyone else would have you believe, then proceeds to spend the rest of the song telling the guy not to embarrass her by proving her right. so it turns out she too knows she has bad taste in men, she just doesn’t want to own up to it. but again ironically i never heard bad reviews, i based my take on manchild/man’s best friend entirely on well… that song and its music video. so i think this also refutes the argument that people need to be really into sabrina’s fandom and lore to understand she isn’t glorifying humiliating yourself for a man. i don’t have a degree on the themes she has so far explored in her discography, i came to that conclusion cause i paid attention to the song she just released and tried to understand what she might be trying to communicate. i really appreciated short n sweet as an era, it was refreshing to see someone in the main pop scene have such a sharp and clear vision for their branding and not be afraid to be a little controversial. hearing taste for the first time shocked me. if you look at the culture right now, this is the time of the girl’s girl. last year proved to us that even household names like ariana grande’s reputation can be shaken if she infringes on our sisterhood. it is also why sabrina and sydney sweeney are receiving such severe backlash right now. the regression of women’s rights globally has connected us together in our anxiety and uncertainty. at times like these no one wants to be the one to break the line, no one wants to be perceived as a traitor, no one wants to tell another fellow woman that she’ll just have to taste her when her boyfriend is kissing her. if anything man’s best friend made me appreciate her capacity to be ruffle feathers even more. i always prefer controversial to boring. i will definitely check out the songs people mentioned (starting with bad reviews) and also give another shot to her back discography, at least emails i can’t send. thank you for the ask!
