Rockaway Beach locates in the Rockaway Peninsula, belong to Rockaway National Recreational Area. It is New York City’s southernmost waterfront areas, so Rockaway Beach become to the gates of New York City. Before the ending of Cold War, the Fort Tilden was used to protect New York City away from the enemies. The fort Belonged to the system called New York Harbor Defenses. After the wars, New York City needed to face the sea level rising problem. Rockaway Beach is a part of the city’s plan, called Coastal Protection, which mean to reinforce the beach areas to keep the city away from the flood.

The underground of Grand Central Terminal.

1. Compare Google Suggest results between “Grand Central Terminal” and “Grand Central Station”, then we can know most people want to know what about the station. As a result, Grand Central Terminal is one of the famous landmarks in NYC, its clock and ceiling are well known.  

2. Search “Grand Central” on YouTube, filter them by “view count”. Grand Central Terminal not only plays a role as an important transportation center but also can be seen as a city stage or a public open space.

1. Because Jacob Riis beach belong to Rockaway Park, in the Gateway National Recreation Area, I find the boundary of Rockway Park.

2. Find all the buildings which near to the Rockaway Park.

3. Use select by attributed, find out which buildings are used as reaction(purple) or commercial(yellow).

4. Mark the public transportation routs connect with the beach and other boroughs and the JFK airport. 

5. Find out the water areas close to the shoreline of Rockaway Park, use the locations to find more information about ecology problems.

6. Locate these habitat areas of rear animals and mark the 1.5 miles area.

Impressions of Broadway walk

I explored Broadway during rush hours on Tuesday. Focusing on the commuters who work or live near the Broadway gave me impressions that:

a. Almost all of them commute alone. If people work in the same area they may have similar income and may live near to colleagues. They can find companies to take the subway together. Why they don’t do that? Why they don’t live near with each other? b. A lot of people commute with their headphone and just stare on their smart phone, which action can isolate themselves from public environment and other people. c. Commuters just ignore things and people that have no business with their work.

Along Broadway, the interface of the street changes from continuous to intermittent, because the height and function of buildings are different. Area upon Broadway is residential area, however the area around the Columbus Circle, down Broadway, is commercial area.

There are some questions: a. Why plant trees in the middle of Broadway? To reduce the wide of the street visually? b. Why many trucks can drive on such a main street in a metropolis during rush hours?
