10.1 - Experience
As I opened my eyes the first thing that came to my attention was the pain in my back. How I miss the days when having such pains were far from my thoughts. I slowly got up, and walked to the bathroom to complete my morning rituals, which were taking longer with each passing day. I was in no particular hurry; in fact, I havenât been in a hurry since I moved to Sunny Homes retirement community 5 years ago.
I made the decision to move here myself after my wife died. The solitude of living alone became too much for me to handle. I was always so certain she would be the one to outlive me, but I guess I was wrong. So here I am, at the old age of 82, living out the last years of my life in relative boredom.
Every day seems so repetitive around here. First, I usually meet some friends Iâve made here for breakfast at one of our village restaurants. Then we normally complain about some aspect of the food, and someone usually mentions some new pain theyâre having. Around midday Iâll usually meet the same people for some card games, which Iâll usually win, or bingo, which I usually wonât. I would definitely describe myself as one of the sharper people in the community. While admittedly Iâm one of the younger people here at 82, I like to think my wits are still fully around me. I like to attribute it to keeping the mind active with puzzles and games and the such.
When night time rolls around, people who are more physically active such as myself will usually meet for dinner. The conversation is normally the same as breakfast, and often just as mind-numbingly dull. The highlight of anyoneâs day here is without a doubt when one of their relatives, especially grandchildren, visit them. While I am fortunate to have 4 grandchildren, I donât hear from them nearly as much as I would like it. I understand though, if I was in college and the prime of my life, I would be too busy to visit my grandparents as well.

I didnât find this particular experience too hard. My main concern while writing this was making it seem genuine enough, as I donât have personal experience being relatively old. Fortunately, it was easy to describe much of the details based off my own experience interacting with older people, as well as knowing some of the clichĂ©s associated with them. After finishing the story, it admittedly seems a bit too clichĂ© and like a stock character, so I suppose putting them in a more unique environment which I am also unfamiliar with could help. I certainly found age a more challenge attribute to change than gender. Perhaps this goes to show that age can have a much larger effect on character development.
