New historical figure unlocked: Rudolf Diels
I’ve been reading In The Garden of Beasts and one man that caught my eye was Rudolf Diels.
He was a German politician and SS Oberführer, even though originally he was not in the Nazi party to begin with. Diels was the first head of the Gestapo, appointed by Göring. Himmler soon removed Diels from his post and he was forced to work in other government positions. It was said that he refused to participate in the anti-Jewish events and initiatives during the 40s, and was arrested after an attempt on Hitlers life (July Bomb Plot). However he survived the war and died to an accidental gunshot wound when hunting in 1957
German General Kurt"Panzer"Meyer.
Kurt Meyer (23 December 1910 – 23 December 1961) was an SS commander. He served in the Waffen-SS (the combat branch of the SS) and participated in the Battle of France, Operation Barbarossa, and other engagements during World War I.
Meyer commanded the 12th SS Panzer Hitlerjungend during the Allied Invasion of Normandy and was a recipient of the Knights Cross of Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and swords.
He is noted as saying that he wasnt interested in killing Jews. He was just trying to keep his men alive.
