LGBTQ youth, you know your needs and experiences best! Participate in a focus group to help create new programs & services built around them.

The 2-hour focus group will be taking place from 5:00pm-7:00pm this Wednesday, December 16th at the Griffin Centre, located at 126 Finch Ave. W (Unit 16) in North York.

It’s open to youth age 13-25 living or receiving services in Toronto and who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, two-spirit, queer, questioning, asexual, pansexual, genderqueer, agender, bigender, non-binary, genderfluid or another non-heterosexual/non-cisgender identity.

You’ll receive $20 for your time and input, as well as TTC tokens if required. Priority will be given to people who register in advance.

Another response to artists not being paid is that artists chose to live a life of poverty, so they can’t expect to be paid for their work. Or an extension of that thinking — that artists are elitist and privileged and make obscure work that nobody cares about, so they shouldn’t be paid. Or the Neoconservative version of these same assertions — that it’s a free-market economy and if they don’t get paid it’s because nobody wants to pay. But, in the case of the Whitney Biennial, for instance, we’re talking about artists being shown in a prominent cultural institution. According to the Art Newspaper, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, and the Guggenheim together attracted close to 10 million visitors in 2010 — more than the entire population of the five boroughs. And all of New York’s top art museums either request or require that visitors pay to view the works on display. These are artists who have been recognized in their field and are having their work viewed by large numbers of people, who, by and large, are paying to view it. The artists who generate the work are the reason we all show up and that museums are able to find funding, yet they often go unpaid.

This zine is a culmination of how i got myself thru/still getting myself thru things and also things that i love and things that make me happy, mostly Stevie Nicks. I hope i don’t come off as someone who has her shit together, most of this zine is me yelling at myself and it’s really difficult to follow the directions that i give to myself, like “TAKE WHAT’S YOURS” and “DON’T HIDE!” it’s very difficult and on most days i don’t follow these directions and i fail completely. But i still yell at myself because it’s necessary that i always have these things etched in me so i have something to hold on to when shit hits the fan. - Fabiola

Meanwhile, Spain, no longer encumbered by the Philippines, walks off into the distance carrying a bag of money.

In 1898, the United States went to war with Spain after the mysterious sinking of the American warship Maine in Havana harbor. The war ended in American victory, and the United States gained control of the former Spanish colonies of Cuba, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. The people of the Philippines, who had begun a war for independence against the Spanish in 1896, resented America’s intention to make them a colony in the new American empire. Their resistance led to the Philippine-American War (1899-1902), a vicious and exhausting conflict characterized by guerrilla warfare.

American attempts at empire were not universally accepted at home. In 1898, the American Anti-Imperialist League was formed to criticize colonial expansionism. The League argued that imperialism (especially denying the right of self government to colonized peoples) violated one of the most basic principles of American culture. The League counted a number of notable figures among its numbers, including author Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) and industrialist Andrew Carnegie.
