This blog features artist spotlights taking a deeper look at specific works available for acquisition at our galleries in Chelsea, New York City and Laguna Beach, California. Join us as we examine a few exhibition highlights to take a closer look at the artistic themes, styles, and the overall impact of these Western works by Swan Scalabre, Greg Miller, and Billy Scheneck.
Artist Spotlight: Swan Scalabre
Scalabre’s oil on panel paintings captivate the viewer, drawing them into a dreamlike world that feels wild, romantic, and full of contradiction. Women, for centuries, were seen through the lens of male desire—posed, idealized, and objectified. Scalabre’s work looks to shift this narrative showing her female subjects with deep complexity. Her artistic inspiration is often found in media, film, and literature. Scalabre’s small format works examine how the male gaze is deeply imbedded into our culture, and encourages the viewer to question who is looking, who is being seen, and why.
Throughout art history horses have symbolized power, freedom, nobility, and the human relationship with nature across cultures. In American Western imagery, horses can represent the untamed frontier and exploration. Art can be a mirror of society and thus can encourage new ways of seeing inclusion, equity, and representation. Scalabre’s emotive skyscapes confront the male gaze while reimagining a brighter future that swirl in the wind throughout her rich and luscious oil paintings.
Artist Spotlight: Greg Miller
Miller’s mixed-media approach to the canvas offers the viewer a contemporary reflection on the layered history of how the Old West is remembered and retold. His use of acrylic material allows for bold color and expressive gesture, with collage elements that provide texture, contrast, and an updated revised commentary. In today’s climate, where identity, land rights, and historical truth are being reexamined, these works offer a way to critically engage with the myths and realities of the past.
The upper left side of the canvas showcases an abstract expressionist approach where Miller allows the paint to drip down creating a sense of spontaneity which further adds to the action of the scene. Using this uncontrolled process further supports the figure challenging traditional ideas of control. Miller’s constructs and deconstructs in his dynamic and layered pieces, exploring the contradiction, ambiguity, and truths of history. The figures, text phrases, imagery, and layered paper ephemera offer a tangible and nostalgic artistic expression filled with energy, emotion, and chaos.
Miller’s Western-themed collage paintings are a compelling fusion of mid-century Americana and contemporary critique. By integrating imagery from 1940-50’s with modern elements, Miller deconstructs the romanticized narratives of the American West, revealing the constructed nature of these myths. The artist’s action-packed scenes illustrate the tension between historical legend and a contemporary interpretation. This technique, where he combines acrylic paint with collage elements, creates a textured, layered effect that mirrors the complexity of cultural memory. Miller’s work invites viewers to reconsider the narratives they’ve been told about the American West and to recognize the influence of media and popular culture in shaping those stories.
In “Outlaws of the West” a female figure is depicted amidst a gun fight while she rides on horseback shooting back at the male figures in the background symbolizing rebellion and desire for freedom from oppressive systems.
This female cowgirl may be the outlaw in this depiction of th Re-frame historical gender roles, acknowledge an underrepresented history for women and tell a more female-centric version of the rugged “cowboy”
“Cowgirls” were less common than male cowboys in depictions of the Old Wild West as told through movies, TV shows, books, and in historical art. Miller’s reimagining in this piece offers an invitation to further examine the underrepresented history of women in the depiction of the Old West.
Exhibition Highlight: Western Outlaws
Miller’s piece juxtaposes a stylized cowboy figure with fragmented text and imagery challenging the traditional hero archetype and highlighting the complexities of Western mythology in this layered canvas.
Artist Spotlight: Billy Schenck
Schenck’s vibrant oil paintings fuse classic Western themes with the bold aesthetics of Pop Art in a body of work that reimagines the American frontier through a contemporary lens, often blending homage with satire. This work depicting the Old West serves as a commentary on the myths and realities of frontier life. Inspired by cinematic imagery, the artist’s distinctive style and approach to the canvas reimagines Western scenes in a flattened and reductive style.
“Gratuitous Violence” look at the complexities of the human relationship with two men riding together on horseback through the 1800’s American frontier amidst a domestic spat. Deconstructing western myths, reclaiming erased narratives, and challenging heteronormative myths, the scene reimagines frontier life portraying those who might have loved or lived outside of heterosexual relationships. Cowboys have long been a symbol of rugged heterosexual masculinity in Western history. Schenck shows the vulnerability, intimacy, and relationship of these figures reclaiming a space for queer love in the erasure of the American mythos.
Exhibition Highlight: Buttes at Frye Canyon
This serene contemporary landscape depicts the beauty of the Frye Canyon in a “paint by number” approach to the canvas. The artist became inspired by the pop art style after working for Warhol and is known as a pioneer of the Western Pop art genre. His flattened depiction of a soothing sunset with ombre colored clouds that cast a warm glow over the mountains connect the viewer the beauty of southeastern Utah along State Route 95 in San Jan County. This area, part of the Cedar Mesa region, is known in particular for its sandstone formations, slot canyons, and expansive desert vistas. Rich tones of oranges, pinks, purples, and golds encourage the viewer to slow down and be present. The painting offers an invitation to enjoy the grandeur of the mountains, a moment of emotional reflection, and the stark beauty of the Western landscape through Schenck’s stylized approach.
Exhibition Highlight: Gunslinger
Using sharp lines, rich vivid oil colors, and simplified forms, Schenck critiques myths and stereotypes of the American frontier. In a Film noir approach to this painting, the artist uses a dark and moody palette to depict this morally ambiguous character. High-contrasts, deep shadows, and crisp highlights illuminate themes of crime, corruption and betrayal. This gunslinger is portrayed in a lone red spotlight, with a smoking gun, showing this anti-hero may be operating outside the law caught in moral ambiguity, struggling between good and evil in a hostile world.
