'Mama Tried' read the truck blowing smoke in front of us. All my expectations of cowboys and milkshakes and stretches of road with open blue skies had been half met. It was comically similar to my daydreams. Now that I was there, I silently plotted how I could escape to the south forever, eternally being lost and staying adrift in motels and roadside diners.

All the hours of watching Investigation Discovery, wondering how the women on those shows went missing, wanting to follow all the deeply creepy people and situations to an end. In my mind this seemed the better way, everything was a fog. Maybe I was seeing the cliff and prepared to jump off. Nothing could be scary anymore. The dark was just an invitation, a warmth that called me to venture slowly to it and lay down, surrender and be lulled to sleep. To awaken to a bound life, to a definite and impossible situation to escape.
