I really enjoyed going to Jeff Burkeâs bluegrass jam class on Sundays at the Station Inn! On the last day of class we got to sing a song each on the stage - what an honour to get to play at this legendary venue! :)

Sofie got to go to a songwriting camp hosted by ace fiddle player Megan Lynch Chowning: http://www.nashvillesongwritercamp.com/ One of the tasks during the weekend was to co-write a song with two other people. I got to work with Daniel Crabtree and Bill Burch, and we had a great time coming up with his song, called Echoes in my Mind. It was a totally new experience for me: what happens when you sit down in a room with complete strangers and you have a few hours to write a song together from scratch? It was very interesting, and really enjoyable. At the end of the weekend, our song got picked for the demo recording session, however, this audio is from our performance of the song in the classroom. The reason is that the demo that we recorded is a very bare-boned, no frills, no arrangement, version of the song, which is the way it's done in Nashville, we learnt, when you record a demo to present a song to artists who might potentially be interested in recording your song. I thought this audio might be a bit more interesting to listen to! :)
Sharing the stage with Old Man Ludecke at the Station Inn on 8 November was Tim OâBrien. This man is music and rhythm embodied.... Just fantastic to experience.
Old Man Ludecke playing at the Station Inn on 8 November 2015. It was a great show, and this is such a nice song...
This is Larry Cordle, who was one of the teachers as the songwriting camp I went to in November. Such a nice guy, and what a great songwriter (check out his songs Highway 40 Blues, Murder on Music Row, and Jesus and Bartenders, e.g.)! http://www.larrycordle.com/
This was at the Station Inn when he was playing with his band New Monday - check out the two videos below! Fantastic band!

Latest update from Nashville! / Senaste nytt frÄn Nashville!
Hereâs the newsletter that we sent out to our mailing list recently!
Hi there!
Hope you're doing well! First of all, thank you so much for all your e-mails and messages and all the encouragement we've received in the last couple of weeks - it's been truly amazing and we are so grateful! Thank you! We haven't been able to write personal replies yet but we will get on to that soon!
John is still with his mum in Scotland. He had an interview booked with the US embassy this week but he has cancelled it as it just sounded too uncertain that he would get a new visa before we were going back to Sweden anyway. He also risked being without his passport for up to six months, which could have caused even more trouble.... This decision of ours made it very difficult for me to figure out what to do. I had a couple of different options:
1) Stay in Nashville until we were meant to go home on 14 December
2) Drive to Asheville and Johnson City on my own, which is what we had planned to do together
3) Go home immediately, or
4) Compromise
So I decided on a compromise. I am going to stay in Nashville on my own for another week while John spends another week with his family in Scotland. Then we will both go back to Sweden, two weeks earlier than planned. We have booked all the tickets and I have now moved into a rented room in another part of East Nashville. I have decided to use every moment of this last week and have booked meetings with various people I wanted to meet before I leave.
......
So that's the news so far! We will keep you updated on what's going on here!
Thank you so much for your support! <3
Big hugs from John & Sofie xx
Och sÄ pÄ svenska:
Hej!
Stor kram frÄn John & Sofie!
I donât know how much longer I will be in Nashville so today I took the chance to try something exciting: I went to a writing office on Music Row to sit down and try to write a song! (Thank you Rick Barker for inviting me!) This is a very special place: all the great music that's been written and recorded here, and all the talented people who have worked here with such passion! I feel very humbled to have been given the chance to sit and create in this very special corner of the world. And here's the song that came out - I think the lyrics are very topical of the situation me and John are in at the moment, but also of the state of the world right now. / Sofie xx
Some sad news from Nashville... / Sorgliga nyheter frÄn Nashville...
This is the letter we sent out to our mailing list a couple of days ago, but we wanted to share the information on here as well:
We have some sad news to share with you.... John's dad, Peter, passed away last week. He'd been ill for a while and things went very quickly at the end. We have spent so many nice times with him over in Balintore in Scotland and we will miss him so much. He was a very funny man, always telling jokes, and he loved crosswords and game shows and speedway, and we used to sit in the front room together and watch TV and try to guess the value on the antiques roadshow. One of my best memories was when we had a Eurovision song contest night together in front of the TV and rated all the songs and had such a good laugh!
The funeral was organised for this Monday, four days ago, and me and John had a big stressful scramble to get John a plane ticket to go over to Scotland for the funeral. All went well, despite everything being very sad of course.
Then John was flying back to Nashville two days ago, and I was completely unprepared when John's mum skyped me to say that John had been stopped at Newark airport and would be sent back to Scotland..... She told me that he had been interrogated very harshly for two hours, he had been thrown into a jail cell, they took his phone and passport from him, and he would be escorted by armed guards onto the next plane back to Scotland.
So you are probably thinking "what would warrant this kind of harsh treatment" - well, John's "crime" is that he came to the USA in 2004 to play music with a band that he thought had organised a visa for him and when he found out that they hadn't, he left the country but he had overstayed by a month. We have entered the US twice since then without problems, we'd registered online this time as well, without any problems, and we thought everything was ok. But this time, at Newark, somebody really dug deep into their system and found the information from 2004.
So John had to fly back to Scotland where he got on a bus back north. He hadn't slept for two days and we were of course frantically trying to figure out what to do. Every day we spend in Nashville is important and valuable to us, and we are now looking at a situation where John might be back here in the beginning of December, if we are lucky. His wonderful friend Debbie has helped him fill in the form to apply for a B-2 visa and he has an interview scheduled with the US embassy for the end of November.
John is very tired and upset, and all this trouble with being sent back to Scotland means that he hasn't even had a chance to process his dad's death and the funeral properly..... The staff at Newark airport paid no attention to the fact that he was in a fragile state due this his father's death and had just been to the funeral and treated him really badly. It was extremely stressful for John.
We are hoping that John will be back in Nashville in a few weeks, but until then we are hanging in midair.... I'm on my own in Nashville and will try to make the best of the situation. We haven't really told anyone about what's happened but we wanted to let you know first, because we really appreciate your support! We have been so excited about this trip and talked about it so much and we thought you might be wondering why we've suddenly gone so quiet...
This is an awful situation to be in and so sad on so many levels, but at the same time I try to tell myself that at least John is alive, he's in good hands, it could be worse (news is coming in here about what's happened in Paris.....), and there is a small chance that he can come back to Nashville for at least a week or two before we have to go back to Sweden.
Thank you for reading this long, sad letter, and take care!!
Lots of love from Sofie xx

Johns pappa, Peter, avled i förra veckan.
