what he means: Jesus crucified and Jesus resurrected must both be proclaimed and the tendency of our culture to remove one or the other completely is a scary indication of the deadly polarization that is occurring. Mercy and justice are one and the same; to proclaim justice alone with no mercy is to bar people from entering the faith and to proclaim mercy alone with no justice is to distill the faith until it becomes little more than an aesthetic. To take away Jesus’s cross is to rob Him of His throne; to ignore His resurrection is to forget His victory.

Saturday, 2/21 — Matthew 18:1-7

[Jesus] called a little child over to sit among the disciples, and said, “I assure you that if you don’t turn your lives around and become like this little child, you will definitely not enter the kingdom of heaven. …Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.” - vv. 2, 5 

When you are disabled, neurodivergent and/or chronically ill, you constantly feel that your needs are an imposition. You learn not to ask for “special” accommodations. That is what the world teaches you. 

What Jesus teaches us is the exact opposite: The most vulnerable ones are the standard. The ways of the Kingdom are built to serve them. Because the simple logical truth is: when their needs are met, everyone’s needs are met.  

“When Black lives matter, all lives will matter.”  When a place is accessible, everyone profits.  We won’t be free until we are all free. 

Growing up, especially when you are a part of a marginalized group, you internalize bit by bit that your most essential needs will never be the standard. Jesus is very clear that this is a sin committed against you. It is hard work “turning your life around” and unlearning those things. It can help to remind yourself that by demanding your own rights, you are actually helping everyone.

i know i often joke 'haha viva cristo rey!!' all silly like on this blog, but i do mean it. the only king i serve is Christ. i am not called to worship the seat of caesar, to pledge myself to governments who do not uphold my Lord's work. not because i want to create some new, perfect 'christian nation'-- christonationalism is a stain upon Christ's name-- but because i know that He is the One who loves us unmeasurably, who desires inherent, undeniable, and radical equality and equity for all. a government of man cannot give that to me. and while am fairly sure that i will never see my Lord's final work, a heaven on earth of radical love, during my time here on earth, I know it is my duty as a christian and lover of Christ to try to make that heaven on earth as best i can.

i cannot rely on caesar to create that heaven. i will not rely on caesar to create that heaven-- i will lean on my Lord, and try my damnest to live a life pleasing to Him, dedicated to upholding and establishing godly justice.

St. Thomas is just like me for real, because if the man I called Rabbi and believed to be the Messiah died in a truly traumatic way, if one of my close friends committed suicide, if the rest of my friends were grieving, then of course I'd go out and try to find food and manage the finances and try to be somewhat helpful. If I came back and my grieving friends told me that they saw our Rabbi, of course I wouldn't believe them. I saw Him die. They're in grief. I'm trying to do the best I can with what little I know.

And if the Risen Christ came back just for me, because He loves me enough to not only rebuke my lack of faith, but to also to renew it? To not only show me His wounds, but also to touch them? What else am I supposed to say but, "my Lord and my God"?

One of my favourite parts of Orthodox theology is that, not only does it say "no, non-Christians are not categorically damned" it follows that up with "and no, we're not citing a prooftext from the Scriptures or the Fathers for that, the only evidence we need for this is that God is good and loves mankind."

Indeed, I think this quote from John Wesley about Calvinism (from his sermon "Free Grace") fits pretty well here:

"You represent God as worse than the devil; more false, more cruel, more unjust. But you say you will prove it by scripture. Hold! What will you prove by Scripture? That God is worse than the devil? It cannot be. Whatever that Scripture proves, it never proved this; whatever its true meaning be. This cannot be its true meaning. Do you ask, “What is its true meaning then?” If I say, ” I know not,” you have gained nothing; for there are many scriptures the true sense whereof neither you nor I shall know till death is swallowed up in victory. But this I know, better it were to say it had no sense, than to say it had such a sense as this. It cannot mean, whatever it mean besides, that the God of truth is a liar. Let it mean what it will, it cannot mean that the Judge of all the world is unjust. No scripture can mean that God is not love, or that His mercy is not over all His works..."
