More than 300,000 people have signed an online petition calling for Lassana Bathily (pictured above) to be granted French citizenship. Bathily came into the spotlight about a week ago when he helped save the lives of shoppers at a kosher supermarket in Paris. As a Muslim with ties to Mali, Bathily was initially suspected of being the shooter. However, his quick thinking and knowledge of the layout of the store is credited by the survivors of the hostage situation as key to helping them make it out.

Bernard Cazeneuve, Interior Minister for France recently announced that the country will expedite Bathily’s citizenship application.
