Portraits of Famous Artists and their Cats

Behind every artist is a furry feline friend, it seems!

For hundreds, even thousands of years, portraits of or including cats have been commonplace in the art scene. A not so surprising fact, if we’re to consider that artists apparently have been getting inspiration from their own pets! Andy Warhol, in particular, seems to have loved cats so much that he was said to have not only created numerous prints of cats, he also kept 25 of them in his house – all of them named Sam!

Cristina García Rodero is a Spanish photographer and member of the Magnum and Vu (photo agency) agencies. She was born in Puertollano, Spain in 1949, and studied painting at Complutense University in Madrid. She used to work as a teacher. She also won the Eugene Smith Foundation Prize in 1989 for photos of traditional Spanish festivals.

Jen Davis looks to self-portraiture as a way to deal with her insecurities about her body image. See the stunning work accompanied with an essay by Hannah Frieser here on Flak Photo.

Davis still uses the camera as a tool to help her understand the world around her. A decade into this project, she finds that her body is changing. As in the past, she continues to photograph through every new circumstance and allows the camera to make sense of it all.
