Murphy hates space. Space represents the shitty way he grew up and everything that happened to him and his family after he got sick

I bet the only things Murphy’s told Emori about space are along the lines of “it sucks it’s the worst, it’s cold ALL THE TIME and if you go outside you die so you’re trapped in a big dumb spaceship, you have to eat shitty flavorless food and there’s no meat or spices, and it’s awful, it’s the worst, I don’t want to go back”

But imagine - when they get up there Emori is AMAZED. She thinks it’s beautiful. She loves seeing the stars up close, and looking down on Earth. She loves that there are no cities that trap her or make her feel unwanted or unsafe.

She loves that she can walk around freely without her glove on because no one cares. She loves that she has a community and a place, but it’s not too crowded to be overwhelming or too reminiscent of the culture and places that have turned her away and threatened her.

She’s fascinated by the machinery and the technology and she wants to know everything she can about it. She loves hearing the hum of the engine under her. One day Raven takes her out space walking and she loves that too.

Imagine Emori finding her place in space. Imagine her coming to think of the Ark as the home she has finally found, so different from the places that rejected her.

And imagine Murphy watching her fall in love, watching her start to feel wanted and safe and accepted, start to feel comfortable and at home. Imagine him re-experiencing space through her eyes, and letting go of the painful memories of the Ark of his childhood, replacing those with the new memories of building a home on the Ark with Emori and the others.
