- It isn’t the easiest question to answer -
A/N: Untitled, tiny drabble originally posted to earlgreybutler for the four-word prompt will you marry me? with minor edits.
With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I thought I’d republish a few of my fluffier fics leading up to the 14th. I’m a little sad that I cannot remember who originally sent me this ask, but I believe it might have been anonymous.
The first time they spoke of it, she had been barely six, and he was terrified.
She had followed him to his room that night - or rather, he had permitted her to, both on the thrill of coveting her company and not wishing to upset his only friend. He paid for the gamble in anxiety, twitching at imaginary footsteps, tormented with the knowledge that Gunter would flay him alive if anyone caught them sitting in his bed, heads bowed close with a book between them.
The hero of the story had vanquished the heinous and wicked sorceress and returned to his beloved to be wedded and live happily for the rest of their days. The tale seemed to inspire her and she took his hand excitedly, her eyes gleaming in the candlelight as she mistook innocence for ingenuity.
He had almost laughed in shock.
“You cannot marry me, I’m your servant.”
“It’s all right, I can ask Gunter. And then we can be a family. It’ll be perfect!”
And indeed it was, but only in the pages of a book such as the one that he held. Poetry in coloured ink - an abandoned boy and a lonely girl, filling the spaces in their hearts with fantasies and false hope.
So he agreed because he knew it was impossible, and in response she smiled, claiming her right to visit him again in the darkness, as they would be married anyway, and she should be with him as much as possible.
