A fake smile, just like everything around him. Nothing and no one deserving of their titles having little to no shame at all. Everything utterly faked, nothing earned, nothing real. Not even himself. Every appearance, look, action, even mere thoughts had to be carefully placed. His own personal act. Something he truly wanted to get away from, but he wouldn’t let his family name be tarnished. No, he had already been looked down upon enough and was above everyone in this room. He had propriety and the skills and knowledge to survive in this environment.
Caught in the wrong moment, one might think the nobles were actually the circus act rather than the actual one outside. It would be so much easier if they all one by one simply dropped dead, less work and less annoyances. There was also the possibility of watching the Scotland yard run around frantically. What a comedy that would be. How enjoyable it would be to swoop in and solve everything instantly and watch their stupid little heads explode.
Everyone was truly an idiot only going along with societal standards set in place. None of them fair except for the nobility. Even then there were still drawbacks for the Earl. So many acts that were normal to him were considered taboo, should any get released, he’d be done for and also surely tarnish the reputation of the queen. How humiliating that would be.
One glance into that violet gaze, told many things. However, with his lack of care not much of it was acknowledged.
A quiet room away from this unorganized and cliche mess? It sounded nice, but at the same time should anything good happen while he was away… well he didn’t want to miss it. Plus the rumored circus was here, nothing proven yet though. His only true motive for coming, other than the usual, was to see if he could get leverage, get facts before everyone else. Especially the Phantomhive boy who was sure to be dispatched soon by Her Majesty.
Though, of course, he could always take it upon himself to explore the rather dim place should he be given a place to rest. If caught, Grey could always use the excuse that he worked right next to the Queen, that he had more authority than the Scotland yard. The pendant of his employer at his chest said it all after all.
“Maybe, though I am interested in seeing the performance coming up,” he hummed, quickly finishing up the last of the drink he’d just recently received. This was definitely one moment he was thankful for his high tolerance for alcohol. It came in handy.
