Workshop: Focal Point Gallery
A few weeks ago I received the news that my funding application to the Arts Council England (ACE) was successful. The project is to produce photos, films and to lead a series of workshops and talks, the first of which took place at Southend’s Focal Point Gallery.
Themed “Quintessential Southend”, the premise was to capture a personal perspective on this seaside city during an hour walk, followed by a craft session making postcards. We had a diverse turnout in terms of age ranges from 3 to late 70s, all of whom had such positive attitudes with a willingness to learn and experiment. Thanks to the gallery and all the participants, I’m sharing some of the output here.
A commission to photograph the new chief executive of Crisis, Matt Downie. Inside Housing Magazine asked me to take portraits of Matt near the Crisis Spitalfields HQ. It was a gloriously sunny morning, and I chose to shoot with these characterful homes in the background. I love the dappled light on them, contrasted with the more modern office block behind. This was the stand-out picture for me because of the concerned look on his face, as well as the light falling in the right place (from my remote flash to the camera-left).
I’m a little late posting this, but it was a pleasure to have some pictures, featuring my neighbours and daughters, selected for Derby’s Format Festival Mass Isolation exhibition in 2021. If you happened to follow their Instagram feed you’ll have seen some fantastic images that interpreted the theme every which way.
Throughout the Summer of 2019 I took photos along the canal networks of England and Wales, after being selected as the Photographer in Residence with the Canal and River Trust. The work is now on display at the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, until August 9th.
My starting point was to explore stretches of canal whose wider areas have undergone a renaissance in recent years. Some example are Hackney Wick, which in the summer resembles a kind of hipster Riviera, and Victoria Quays in Sheffield, which is slowly becoming a cool alternative to the nearby city centre.
Spending long summer days along the canal network evoked in me a sense that I had been transported to a different era, one where the pace of life is slower and somewhat mesmerising - in part because of the historic infrastructure that permeates, which provides a rare glimpse into our industrial heritage.
Along my journey I met numerous houseboat residents, many of whom make up a close-knit community, who look out for one another. I was privileged to be invited into some of their personal spaces, to meet and photograph the occupants.
My nearest canal, the Grand Union in west London, is a stretch where the characterful old warehouses are giving way rapidly to more bland housing developments, leaving me feeling nostalgic for the industrial past.
It’s notable that many people today are enjoying the wellbeing affects associated with spending time next to our waterways, as evidenced by the increasing number of boats, boards, floating restaurants etc. throughout parts of London, in particular. This is something that would have been a highly unusual sight only a decade or two ago, when the canals were seen as a far less attractive, and more polluted destination.
Who knows, maybe even one day people will be swimming in “the cut”.

Portraits of London Mayoral Candidate
A few weeks ago I took portraits of London Mayoral candidate Sian Berry, who is standing for the Green Party. It was a blustery day, which is always a challenge where long hair and shoot-through brollies are involved. Fortunately Sian is very easy in front of camera, and her assistants helped to prevent any devices from toppling, as well as heroically keeping hair in check for several frames.
Lush London wine cellar interiors
Since lockdowns 1 and 2 most. of my events commissions have ceased, which has given me the perfect opportunity to concentrate on generating more interiors commissions. Out of the new clients that I have. worked for is a company which builds and instals bespoke wine cabinets and cellars. It’s been a pleasure to train my lens at such imaginative and well-crafted designs. The cellar below was a challenge due to the range tungsten lighting, which was reflected up from the floor by terracotta tiles and the similarly toned wood, ensuring a fair amount of colour correction in post-processing was applied. Editorial profile of Roisin Murphy
Profile of Roisin Murphy as her 5th solo album is released. After shooting in her autumn-tinged garden, the music was notched up a level, prompting some exuberant carving up of the sitting room floor. Click London Portraits to see more. #roisinmurphy #londonportraits
“Portraits of Dr. Death”
Portrait's of Marie Cassidy, Ireland's State pathologist until her recent retirement. She is now promoting her memoir Beyond the Tape.
I was pleased to come across this rather grotty mews round the corner from where we met in Fitzrovia, a location I could imagine was the scene of a brutal crime!
Photographed for the Irish Independent.

London fashion shoot
It’s not often that I get hired to do a fashion shoot, but I really enjoyed working with DK, model and musician based in West London. We enjoyed the softer autumnal light and the character Regency properties north of Hyde Park. See more London professional portraits here.
Daughters Portraits (at Virus lockdown)
The lockdown during the Covid-19 epidemic enabled me to spend more time with my young daughters, who are now 3 and 4. With my usual assignments cancelled I was itching to take photos, so trained my lens on them during euphoric outings to the park, the Thursday Clap for Carers and various activities at home. It also enabled me to dust down the camera which I reserve normally for personal projects, the digital medium format Fuji GFX50R. Here’s a selection of my favourites.
Commission from Inside Housing Magazine, a profile of Grenfell Survivor Nicholas Burton. Click on my London portraits gallery to see more commissions.
I was commissioned to photograph a conference for delegates in the legal sector, with the emphasis on networking and interaction. There was plenty of opportunity for that as the organisers assigned lots of time for coffee breaks, lunch and drinks, with in an award ceremony at the end. As well as enjoying the occasional nibble myself, I took full advantage of the good quality refreshments by featuring them extensively in my final edit. More London conference photography here.
Law firm profile shoot
I was commissioned to shoot 4 individuals from a legal firm. However after I’d painstakingly set up all my lighting I was told there were in fact three, and that they didn’t want to use the board room, despite booking it. Luckily they were based in a modern shared working building, and I really enjoyed using the kitchen and lounge, which both had a Scandinavian minimalist feel, to suit the rather chic look of the team I was set to photograph. More company portraits can be seen here.
World Cup
Here we go again: us football fans wanting England to win will be braced for another rollercoaster ride, though the it seems the pressure is less than in previous tournaments. I had fun last time round, watching in London in pubs and restaurants representing all the competing countries: https://www.jongoldberg.co.uk/portfolio/G0000aUtNlyLFSL8
Exhibition at Oriel Colwyn
This weekend sees the launch of the Northern Eye Festival, in which I'll be speaking about and showing pictures taken over the last six years at Grow Heathrow. The project will be exhibited next to stunning pictures of Lammas Eco-Village by Amanda Jackson until late December 2017 http://www.northerneyefestival.co.uk
I have been asked to do my first ever Instagram takeover, thanks to the Good Agency. Here’s my first post, one of my favourite portraits from Grow Heathrow of Charlotte outside the dwelling she built using eco materials and principles.
