(Translation he ate something spicy and is breathing fire breath) A year ago today, a perfect crisp fall day in New York. We took Uly for donuts & a walk around MoMA, then to Central Park to play at one of their many playgrounds. We were a few months into living here, with PHD course work and a new apartment and jobs to acclimate to. I was so so excited to be assigned to cover a Jasper John show for my first Brooklyn Rail assignment, so I also went and saw that show that day. Sometimes I stare at these pictures and try to imagine that there is a tumor almost as big as my palm wrapped around our kiddo’s brain stem, an ominous white mass on the MRI scan. We didn’t know, couldn’t know. He was hitting all his developmental milestones and was almost never sick. I relied on his flush peachy complexion and boundless energy as a constant in my life, as reliable as planetary navigation in an inky celestial sky. Happy Father’s Day Dave! This is one for the books! When Uly was in the hospital it was crazy trying to keep him sedated—but not too sedated —a horrible balance between him thrashing around and his vitals dipping into bad places. I watched so many times as Dave would climb into the ICU bed with Uly, gingerly moving his IVs and the line that was slow dripping his excess brain fluid. Almost like magic Uly’s heart rate would lower and his dwindling oxygen levels would rise. In all that we’ve been through, I know without a doubt Dave is one of Uly’s safe places, a place to regroup, charge up, and heal.
