In case anyone wanted to feel better about how confusing English can get.
Reasons why you must capitalize your nouns, as taught to me by Florian.
Terve! This week’s #WeeklyTongue is Finnish (Suomi), a Uralic Finnic language spoken in Finland, Russia, Estonia, Norway and Sweden. In this video, you can see Jenni speaking Finnish. There is a transcript and a translation as well. Finnish has about 5.4 million native speakers. The writing system is Latin and there exists also a Finnish braille and Finnish sign language (suomalainen viittomakieli), the latter being recognized as a domestic language in 1995. The first writing system was standardized in the 16th century. Finnish is one of two official languages of Finland, sharing the title with Swedish. There are two main dialects: Eastern and Western Finnish, which can be further subdivided. Finnish is a synthetic language, which means that it uses suffixes that can also form new words. This explains why some words can become so long. For example, a single word such as talossanikin is made up of suffixes and means ”in my house, too”. –ssa is a preposition, much like ”in” is, and ”-ni” is possesive, whereas ”-kin” means ”too”, for instance. In terms of language varieties, one can distnguish between yleiskieli, the standard language, used in formal situations such as the news, and puhekieli, the spoken language. There is a written Finnish called kirjakieli, too.
Example phrases (credit Wikipedia) • (Hyvää) huomenta – (Good) morning • (Hyvää) päivää – (Good) afternoon (literally “Good day”) • (Hyvää) iltaa – (Good) evening • Terve! / Moro! – Hello! • Heippa! / Moikka! / Hei hei! / Moi moi! – Bye! • Nähdään! – See you later! (“we see”) • Hyvästi – Goodbye / Farewell • Hauska tutustua! – Nice to meet you. • Kiitos – Thank you • Tervetuloa! – Welcome! • Anteeksi – Sorry / Excuse me • kyllä – yes • joo – yes (informal) • ei – no
Fun fact: the longest word in Finnish is lento¬kone¬suihku¬turbiini¬moottori¬apu¬mekaanikko¬ali¬upseeri-oppilas. It means something along the lines of someone who is an “airplane jet turbine motor assistant mechanic, non-commissioned officer in training”.
Did you know Finnish has an absence of gender? hän means both he and she.
Do you or someone you know speak Finnish? How about submitting a video for our Youtube channel at www.wikitonges.org/#/submit?

"Long Live"
I said remember this moment in the back of my mind The time we stood with our shaking hands The crowds in stands went wild We were the Kings and the Queens And they read off our names The night you danced like you knew our lives Would never be the same You held your head like a hero On a history book page It was the end of a decade But the start of an age Long live the walls we crashed through How the kingdom lights shined just for me and you I was screaming long live all the magic we made And bring on all the pretenders One day, we will be remembered I said remember this feeling I pass the pictures around Of all the years that we stood there On the side-lines wishing for right now We are the Kings and the Queens You traded your baseball cap for a crown When they gave us our trophies And we held them up for our town And the cynics were outraged Screaming, “This is absurd!” Cause for a moment a band of thieves In ripped up jeans got to rule the world Long live the walls we crashed through How the kingdom lights shined just for me and you I was screaming long live all the magic we made And bring on all the pretenders I’m not afraid Long live all the mountains we moved I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you I was screaming long live that look on your face And bring on all the pretenders One day, we will be remembered Hold on to spinning around Confetti falls to the ground May these memories break our fall Will you take a moment, promise me this That you’ll stand by me forever But if God forbid fate should step in And force us into a goodbye If you have children some day When they point to the pictures Please tell them my name Tell them how the crowds went wild Tell them how I hope they shine Long live the walls we crashed through I had the time of my life, with you Long, long live the walls we crashed through How the kingdom lights shined just for me and you And I was screaming long live all the magic we made And bring on all the pretenders I’m not afraid Singing, long live all the mountains we moved I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you And long, long live the look on your face And bring on all the pretenders One day, we will be remembered
I just liked it.
It's better to learn at least some basics of the language!
The one about the bus. We wait about 40 minutes for the bus and then we checked the timetable , it said that buses go only on M-P, and on SS. Guess what it means! A Hint- today is "L". Fortunately we found the taxi number.
Maanantai - Понедельник - Monday Tiistai – Вторник - Tuesday Keskiviikko – Среда- Wendesday Torstai – Четверг - Thursday Perjantai - Пятница - Friday Lauantai – Суббота - Saturday Sunnuntai - Воскресенье - Sunday As soon as I we came to the cottage, I rushed to the laptop and opened online courses of the Finnish language.
By the way, pronunciation is quite easy. I Always wanted to learn basics of the foreign language , when I travel, it is another world with another culture. It's magic! And today I got an incentive to start and I feel decisive in this area :)
Off to Finland- Day 2
07.03.15 7:45 The waitress woke me up, she brought breakfast. I am so sleepy, can't move a finger not only a jaw. 7:50 Customs examiners woke me up. I swear, one day I will learn how to curse. Btw, look at the picture of glasses.Typical russian train glasses. I wanted to take them as a souvenir, but father didn't allow..... 8:37 We are still at the boarder . I am reading. 9:11 We came to the second boarder I realized that I don't remember the map, and almost don't have the foggiest idea in which direction we are heading. It is typical me. Probably to the north, look at the snow. 9:48 Time back: it is 8:48 now 9:00 As soon as I am done with diploma, I will start learning the Finnish language. 9:07 Сustoms official told us " good luck in Lapland" :D 10:02 We are at Kouvala. We have three hours before the second train. It's time to leave skies under the bench and explore the city . 11:32 The city is not as interesting as it was in Bavaria . Helena, I miss our city- hopping. Do you remember how we used the tram to explore the city quicker? There is a cafe called "hersburger". It's like other fast food places, but Finnish and without cappuccino . I bought "The Economist" for this week!!!6 euro actually... 12:51 Train to Kajaani "Herrscher der Welt" in the headphones 16:52 I still in the train I feel bored. We watched the series " suits". The coolest TV show! 17:33 Yeeeeeeeeey, we arrived!!!! The bus is at 18 03. P.S I don't know this girl in the pictures, she is just a stranger. The post about a bus is following. The price for taxi from Kajanee to Vuocatti turned out to be 60 Euro, the price for bus is 4 Euro per person. At 19 30 we arrived to the hotel! The pictures of our wonderful cottage will be tomorrow . Then we rushed to the supermarket. It is located 10 minutes from the cottage walking . However we have to go down and up the slope and it was a it slippery... But it accelerated the descent. So. at 19 50 we were at the supermarket, which is closing on Saturday at 20 00. A tip - if you don't bear mint, don't buy cookies with the sign " Mintuu" but looking like " Oreo". It is disgusting. At 20 05 I tried one small slope nearby the supermarket. 22:00 Alcohol can be quite strong if you are tired. 22:30 Sauna ! 23:00 Rolling in the snow after the sauna ! 23:42- reviewing the day 00:15 Good night! The pictures will be tomorrow .

Off to Finland - Day 1
06.03.15 Having overcome fussy and nervous packing and burdening ourselves with two big suitcases, two rucksacks and two pairs of skies, my father and I are heading to Finland. ( It was supposed to be family trip, but my mammy does not have vacations now ). As we are not such people who always stick to the easy road, we have three trains and a bus ahead! Stage 1. 21:00 As I am 100 % lovely daughter , I trusted my father both suitcases , took the skies and headed to the first train : Korolev - Moscow It was success, because I managed neither break skies, nor kill innocent passer-byes. 21:45 We are at Moscow, One man told us ” hey guys, the snow has already melted there!” Funny lad. The second train to Kouala at 23 00. I would like to emphasize , that while I am standing in the corner, keeping an eye on our stuff and typing this paragraph , my father is sneaking around the railway station, looking for sandwiches for HIS dinner. While I have time, I want to tell that I missed uploading here my news. Oh god, how I missed travellings and how every thought about the trip gives me a lot of energy!!! I missed this feeling. 22:20 Daddy is still not here , i am tired to stand. I wanna this week to be productive, so I have : 1)The whole novel ” Anna Karenina” by Tolstoy to read in Russian 2) The ” Green mile” by King to read in English 3) Etwas über Helden, Drachen,Königskinder und Liebe auf Deutsch zu lesen 4) The German textbook to practice, because in the end of April I will have a test at Goethe Uni , whose results will show whether I DESERVE to study here at B1, or I shall give it up. Wo bist mein deutsch Freund mir zu helfen ??? 5)6 essays in English to write as CPE preparation 6) A book to read for my Bachelor thesis or final diploma. You know, I am defending my diploma in the end of June, and the Wednesday was the day when I got the theme. But! My supervisor wants me to prepare the theoretical part till 17.03.15. I have slightly more than one week. After this January, i realised that my Uni decided to destroy my mind completely, in order I would NEVER forget it. 7) The book about the technology of manufacturing the items which are made of composites materials. Just four words: bloody last term paper ( But the target of this trip is to ski and snowboard , not to study…..) 22:30 We are waiting the train to be opened. Now I am enjoying the view to our compartment . Look at the pictures! 22:40 Yeeeey. We are in the train. The pictures are attached . Btw, typical trains in Russia for long trips have 4 shelves in the compartment. Two down and two up. I don’t know how it is overseas, but here it is quite possible to sleep with unknown people. However , father decided to be a bit luxurious and ordered this places. Holidays are ahead ! 23:00 You should see my father’s face when he realized that all refreshments and snacks here are free! 23 :24 The crew is so polite here. Oh, and breakfast is included in this train!!! 00:03 Wow. There is a shower in the restroom. In the train. In Russia . And it is clean. I am in another universe 00:14 Good night!
