also, I kinda wanted to ask about tomboy Reo cause canonically her parents seem kinda old fashioned so would her being a tomboy upset them(like would they want her more feminine) or nah?
to me reo is very masc-y … a lot of her story is about themes of autonomy and identity and freedom, and reo’s first act of rebellion is choosing to pursue football even when it’s expressly dissuaded and outright denied. as such, i figured a more masculine / unconventional / non-traditional presentation would suit her. reo isn’t inherently deferent to her father (and her family legacy), it’s simply that until she found soccer, nothing had every interested her, and she’d thus resigned herself to following the path set out for her. additionally, as a child we see reo be a little rude, too, but as a teenager, he’s said to never come off as spoiled. so, i see reo as ojou-sama aligned in childhood, then a little more approachable everyone’s elegant princess (so she loses the villainess curls) type as a teen, followed by tomboyish when she breaks into soccer. i think i really like the idea of reo making choices with her appearance that reflect who she is, what she wants to do, and the life she wants to lead. i also do think reo’s pretty androgynous as a guy, so i wanted to keep it that way as a girl, too.
additionally, this might be a me issue, but i have very strong feelings about preserving the gender politics involved in nagireo’s dynamic. obviously, this can’t be done without stating that kaneshiro is misogynistic, and his ideas of a what a ‘womanly’ thing is absolutely bleeds into the narrative, ie. the deliberate usage of words such as ‘wife’ or ‘maiden’ for reo, or the fact that he based reo off the trope of ‘a popular girl who is enamoured by the first guy to not be interested in her’. this is in contrast to his character positioning, which is quite obviously the rich hyper-competent ikemen type, or the type of guy who’s ‘everybody’s prince’. the beauty of nagireo can be pretty aptly summed up by ‘everyone’s prince had become nagi’s super-elite wife’ (real line from the light novel), and that subversion of reo’s character archetype (and gender stereotype) is critical to the fun of their dynamic. it just doesn’t work if reo is ‘girlish’ the whole time. i’ll take feminine reo if she’a nagi’s husband, lol. but masc reo does maintain their original dynamic.
as for reo’s parents… i don’t necessarily think they’re traditional as much as they are simply controlling. i think reo would be raised to be her father’s successor even if she was a girl, so her dressing masculine wouldn’t be particularly taboo. maybe it wouldn’t be the exact thing her parents wanted but i do think they might place it more as 1. a phase or 2. not really a hinderance to her work. i’ve always liked to interpret reo’s parents as not necessarily conservative/traditional, so that relationship of control still exists but is more convoluted.
