the randolph name, it was a name that people have known very well since the 1800s. they were old money, and as years have gone by, every new generation brought in new money to pile on top. but with each generation came with their own troubles, scandal, you name it. and it was no different when it came to jupiter james randolph.
jupiter randolph was born in new york, to one charles james randolph and isabel flores. all he had known were the richest that came from the randolph family, his hometown of the manhattan island, more specifically the riches that his father had gotten on his own.
his father was one of the richest men in country. a white man with power, had a name that was prestigious to begin with, it was tale as old as time. and here was jupiter–– the brown kid who stuck out like a sore thumb. even next to his older brother, who was the epitome of the perfect randolph son, jupiter could not compare, even if he tried.
but at least he had his mother. even if the men in his life were too ambitious for their own good, his mother was always there for him, guiding him, teaching him photography, recommending books they could read and have discussions about them. if only jupiter had known he would only have thirteen precious years with her.
a terrible plane crash had ended the life of mrs. isabel flores. the family felt a devastating blow. and jupiter ended up realizing something that day. he would forever feel lonely in his own home, with his own family now that his mother was no longer in the picture.
while his father focused on his company and whatever woman of the month he was seeing, his own brother focused on high school then college, jupiter ended up turning to his books and movies that his mother and him both enjoyed. but at what point would he be able to take the loneliness. in jupiter's grief, his mental health only sank the more time he spent on his own. it started with the heaviness of his chest and feeling like he couldn't breathe. anxiety attacks were frequent, nothing a pill could fix, right? the attacks only got worse, and the only way he felt like he could deal with it was to gain back control somehow. so his appetite took a hit. he started to eat less and less, to the point where he at times didn't eat at all.
the moment his father found out, the story of his thirteen year old son leaving the state to attend some boarding school was widely known, but the story of why was not. a breath of fresh air, some intense therapy, and taking in all the emotions he was holding in was slowly starting to heal jupiter. but still he put on a fake smile most of the time so that people would think he was okay.
it had taken years for jupiter to keep himself in check. and boarding school was fine, but he never touched the island during summers, always spending it in manhattan with his grandmother. but he missed his life in new york. even when he told his own father he wanted to move back, wanting to finish high school with his friends, and be a normal teenager. so at sixteen he had returned and things for jupiter were only looking up.
jupiter had changed though, snarky comments and sometimes even being a little critical and combative. of course, it was only the wall that he built up, struggling to want to have anyone get close to him, other than the few trusted friends he had. but the new jupiter knew that if he showed his most authentic self, to be vulnerable–– he could get hurt again, and he wasn't sure that his mental health would be able to take it.
so he went on to be this persona he created, one the media knew very well, the perfectionist that ended up being snarky at times. he was like that through the rest of high school and college. and now he was living in brooklyn where he wasn't always in the spotlight. and he was certain that as long as new york found some new it person and obsessed with them, he could breathe easing knowing he was slowly being forgotten.

CONNECTIONS
oh brother–– my half brother - jupiter’s older brother, he’s in his late twenties/early thirties. can be working in their father's company or doing something else to make a name for himself. because of their age gap, jupiter feels distant from him, even when this is the only sibling he has. he does feel like he has a bit of a grudge on him because after jupiter's mother died and his brother went off to college they barely have spoken.
the only boy i ever loved but a friendship it will stay - someone jupiter possibly grew up with in new york or met when he spent summers in brooklyn. they are someone who jupiter feels comfortable around. this is the only person he has ever had feelings for growing up. he's afraid if he ever told him how he felt the relationship would end. at the end of the day they are just best friends.
they were the best friend that became each others found family - they had known each other for so long that jupiter considers them like a brother/sister. this is the person that knows all his secrets, and vice versa. if anything would ever happen to the other, you'd end up finding the other half of the pair right there with them.
frenemies to friends to maybe more - someone who constantly teases on jupiter, for no reason. constant flirting and making poor jupiter uncomfortable since he is still figuring out his sexuality as a demisexual. eventually jupiter realizes the other person is more than what he perceives himself to be. and somehow that intrigues jupiter.
