Week 14 Definitions

Pattern:  an underlying structure that organizes surfaces or structures in a consistent, regular manner

Texture- 

Tactile: the actual (3D) feel of a surface or texture

Visual texture:  the illusion of the surface's texture. It is what tactile texture looks like (on a 2D surface)

Collage:  a piece of art that incorporates a variety of materials

Versimilitude:  the appearance of being true or real

Trompe l’oeil: to fool the eye, a type of optical illusion in art that makes an image appear 3 dimensional

Week 13 Definitions

Stillness: a notable absence in movement or action

Arrested action: when an action in art is suddenly paused

3 Ways to suggest motion-

Repeated figure: the same figure is repeated over and over

Cropped figure: cropping a figure to suggest that they are leaving the frame

Blurred outlines: blurring the outlines to suggest a quick or shaky movement

Optical movement: a style of visual art that utilizes optical illusions to imply movement

Week 12 Definitions

Devices to show depth-

Vertical position: an artwork that shows a sense of verticality, typically to make something seem high up

Amplified perspective: a dramatic illusionistic effect that is created when an object is pointed directly at the viewer

Isometric projection: a method for visually representing three-dimensional objects in two dimensions that involves and above and 120 degree angle view

Transparency: the quality of being able to see-through part of an artwork

Types of perspective-

1-point, 2-point, 3-point:  a type of linear perspective drawing that uses 1, 2 or 3 vanishing points respectively to create the illusion of depth in an artist’s drawing

Atmospheric:  method of creating the illusion of depth in art by modulating color to simulate changes effected by the natural atmosphere on the colors of things seen at a distance, namely going from warm to cool as the image goes out further

Week 11 Definitions

Volume, Mass:  a solid body or a grouping of visual elements that compose a solid form

Naturalism: art that focuses on the depiction of realistic objects in a natural setting

Distortion:  a change, twist, or exaggeration that makes something appear different from the way it really is

Idealism:  the tendency to represent things as aesthetic sensibility would have them rather than as they are

Geometric: a design characterized by or decorated with regular lines and shapes

Non-objective: art that does not represent specific objects, people, or other subjects found in the natural world

Week 10 Definitions

Color Wheel-

Achromatic: a colorless scheme possessing no hue and utilizing black to white

Monochromatic: color scheme utilizing a single base hue and extending it

Complementary: color scheme using one base color and its opposite on the color wheel

Analogous: color scheme utilizing colors close to one another on the color wheel

Triad: color scheme using three equally spaced hues

Tetrad: color scheme using four balanced hues

Warm, Cool: color scheme involving a balance of warm and cool colors

Achromatic-Chromatic Mix: color scheme utilizing black to white and a single hue as an accent

Value Keys: color scheme involving a range of values, from light, medium or dark

Saturation Keys: color scheme involving a range of saturated colors, from full sauration, tint, tone and shade

Local color:  the natural color of a thing in ordinary daylight, uninfluenced by the proximity of other colors

Color psychology: the study of hues as a determinant of human behavior

Color symbolism: the usage of colors as a representation of a feeling that is associated with that color

Week 9 Definitions

Color Systems-

Additive:  colors created by adding colored light to black

Subtractive: colors created by completely or partially subtracting light wavelengths

3 Dimernsions of Color-

Value:  the level of lightness or luminance in a color

Hue: a specific color in its pure state

Saturation, Chroma: the brightness or or purity of a color

Color / Value-

Tonal Scale: the scale of light to dark in art

Chiaroscuro: an effect of contrasted light and shadow created by light falling unevenly or from a particular direction on something

Value Contrast:  a contrast between lightness and darkness in an artwork

Value Key: a specific range of similar values utilized in an artwork

Week 8 Definitions

Point set in motion: a central part of an artwork that is the centerpiece of the movement within the piece 

Defining shape and form: line describes shape, and shapes describes objects

Line quality: any of a number of characteristics of a line including weight, direction, uniformity, etc.

Line as value: utilizing lines to create dark and light

Types of line-

Contour and gesture: line or drawing used to define the outside or basic elements of a form

Outline:  a line or set of lines enclosing or indicating the shape of an object in a sketch or diagram

Explicit line: a evident and clearly visible line in an artwork

Implied line:  a line that suggests the edge of an object or a plane within an object

Lost and Found: a line in an artwork that is revealed then disappears

Pixel: the smallest unit of programmable color on a computer display or in a computer image

Focal point:  areas of interest, emphasis or difference within a composition that capture and hold the viewer's attention

Implied: an shape or line in an artwork that isn’t literally visible but is noticed unconsciously
