Every time I'm forced by circumstance to hand-sew something, I remember a fairytale I once read. There are lead-up shenanigans as the humble protagonist helps small animals and meets the princess and all that, but in the climax, the princess rigs a contest for her hand by setting her own task: sew her a dress in a single night.

The noble suitors, who have never sewn a thing in their lives, sabotage themselves by their own ambitions: they choose difficult fabrics to work with and cut huge, elaborate patterns and select gems and pearls and beads to sew onto it, and snip such long bits of thread that they lose time detangling their stitches, and ultimately resort to pinning bits together as they run out of time, so that their offerings initially look beautiful and flashy, but when the princess tries them on they stick her with pin ends and fall apart as she moves.

The humble protagonist uses a very simple pattern without embellishments and sews using short lengths of thread (snipped off and threaded for him by little birds of course) which don't tangle and therefore save time. His dress is plain by contrast, but holds together and the princess is able to move freely in it, and so he wins the contest and her hand.

I particularly think about the bit about threading the needle with shorter lengths of thread, needing to tie off more often but avoiding tangles and thereby saving time.

I then ignore that piece of wisdom passed down through who knows how many years and proceed to cut the longest damn length of thread I can manage because I hate tying off beginning or ending knots and I will not subject myself to more of that even if it does mean more tangles along the way.

Here's how to opt out of Twitch's new generative AI training setting.

What I think is the funniest about this is that iirc it's mad illegal for a company to add something like this in without giving your users a notice of change and also a new T&C for them to sign, and well. I checked everywhere and I never got a single email about a new T&C or even an email from Twitch AT ALL and when I logged in after this feature got added I was not given any popup notification about it. They were really banking on making it impossible for anyone to say no until it was likely too late and then just throw an opt-out button at us after the fact.

Also while Twitch does get some rights to your content it's in service of them being able to host your stream and show it to other users, that does not give them the complete rights to your art, stream, or face. Like AMC doesn't own both Iron Man the character and RDJ's face alongside it just because they got to show it in their theater, Disney and Marvel still own them and RDJ owns his face. This is the same thing. You can show my face and art to other users and host it on your site, but you can't then do whatever else you want with it without my permission. And while the average Twitch streamer does not have the resources to fight on that front, companies like Sony and Nintendo might, and most big name streamers are straight up millionaires so? Idk I wouldn't love those odds if I were them. I am a copyright abolitionist now tho, so I think the best option to go after them for is the whole "never letting us opt out ahead of time and where's my terms and conditions, you can't treat my agreement to the last one as an agreement to this new one" thing. Also probably one far easier to win.

But yeah, would not be even a little surprised if this turns into a lawsuit if only for the creators who were fucked over and denied a chance to say no.

My opinion on the reptile-ness of birds:

While it's true in a cladistic sense that birds are reptiles, it's rarely actually useful to get on people's cases for using the word "reptile" in a way which excludes birds; the colloquial definitions of words often differ from their scientific ones, and you know what they meant, so don't be a cock.

It is, however, very funny to pretend to get the relationship backwards and be like "you know, technically all reptiles are birds".

The short version is that birds and crocodiles are more closely related to each other than they are to any other clade. There is no coherent cladistic definition of "reptile" which contains crocodiles but not birds; from a cladistic standpoint, either birds are reptiles, or crocodiles aren't.

(If you're about to suggest avoiding classifying birds as reptiles by attacking the issue from the opposite end and declaring that crocodiles are birds, it may amuse you to know that this has in fact been proposed.)
