What's with Adella's hairdo and color scheme?

Adella herself is lovely. But I really don't care for the color scheme and hairstyle that the animators decided to stick her with.

Besides pearl scrunchies getting repetitive, that long front-bun is just...odd. To boot, the shades of gold and green they picked remind me of baby food.

There were probably reasons for all of this in the first movie, possibly related to the complexities of the film's animation. But when the TV series came and they tweaked many of the sisters' designs, the only changes made to Adella's was simplifying her hair and making her the token "fat" sister.

In fairness, Adella's odd hairstyle in the movies does highlight how different hairstyling can be in a society that lives in zero-gravity.

But look at that mermaid behind her! That kind of hairdo would suit Adella, while making her stand apart from the other sisters. "Ariel's Beginning" was another opportunity to give Adella a better design. Instead, they used all of their best new ideas on the background extras.

That pale pastel yellow would be much easier on the eyes than Adella's 1970s-living-room color scheme. The clamshell hair clip, or any of those flower getups, would have been lovely on her.

This funny seashell hairpiece seen a couple times in the TV show would also have worked well.

Official concept art for Ariel's sisters simply doesn't seem to exist. But storyboards reveal some early ideas for their designs.

From the look of things, the decision to have Ariel's hair always down and all of her sisters wear their hair up wasn't immediate. I like that mermaid with the pigtails, but I guess one ponytail is easier to animate than two.

So in the 12-book Little Mermaid novel series that Disney released back in the 90s four of Ariel's sisters each got boyfriends

Aquata was with a merman named Nexar who works as a junior stagehand at the royal theatre. Andrina was with a merman named Neptony who she plays finball with

Arista was with a merman named Dylan who works as a stable hand at the summer palace

and Attina was with a merman named Tedrick who works at the public library. we have some illustrations for three of the boys (sadly no illustrations of Aquata's boyfriend Nexar) This is Andrina with Neptony

In the above image Tedrick is the one holding the flowers/coral and the other merman who looks almost identical to him is his cousin Taz. The book they appear in has a plot that revolves around a whole match-making plot Adella comes up with that goes wrong because of misunderstandings.

She’s so BIG! - like in stature.

Most Ursula dolls are so tiny to keep them level with Ariel but Ursula isn’t supposed to be Ariel’s height! She’s supposed to look imposing & intimidating.

Powerful over the poor defenseless princess.
