Developmental drawing - Lesson 3 Structure and shape
Oxalis Triangularis, Toadstools and cacti
Miniature imaginary italian landscape. I wet the paper and use a fine brush with ink, in this case I used acrylic ink but prefer Indian ink. It was an exercise in tone but also trying to get the landscape with trees in proportion. Used the photograph below for inspiration.
Observational drawings from class.
Thistle, banana leaves and ilex crenata cloud tree. All drawn in ink and graphite and tried to incorporate the different drawing lines we explored in class.
Observational drawing. Spring bloom. Freesia drawn in pencil and ink. Acrylic ink diluted to add lilac shade. I would have been more subtle with the colour to try and achieve a paler more translucent lilac. This is the first time trying to use paint in this manner so quite happy with the outcome. I’m quite happy with the composition of the petals.

Four final drawings showing development. Selection and interpretation of ideas. Communicate interpretations. Selection of appropriate media.
From top row showing the final drawing and original sketch/drawing/idea.
1. Development of transformation mask. Sketchbook analogue to digital. Final drawing chosen as I feel it represents the essence of identity as outlined in the brief. There’s is a double vision element to the digital drawing which ties in with the mask as there is the outer mask of the bird or animal, and the inner mask again still masking the true identity of the human wearing the mask. The haziness of the drawing conjures up the hypnotic trancelike dances of the mask wearer during the ceremonial dances. I took the mask from simple drawing and used the symmetry tool on Procreate.
2.following on from the exploration of the Mari Lwyd folk tradition of wearing the animal skull, again hiding the identity of wearer - I chose this final drawing as I have enhanced the original skull drawing with charcoal, graphite, ink and chalk on Procreate to give a more contemporary feel. Adding a graffiti street style and adding horns and hair instead of ribbons and bells. It’s in contrast to my original drawing of the mask which looked comical.
3. The Raven. I chose this Raven as I can see the development and progress in capturing the details and form of the bird. I took the original drawing which I wasn’t inspired by and enhanced it by being able to use different tools on Procreate to recreate the feathers and iridescence. Although not a mask as such, the Raven is very symbolic in many cultures and folklore such as the First Nations traditions. the Raven bird head and beak forms are used in the plague doctor and steampunk masks.
4. Again, I have chosen a bird development drawing of a young raven. Analogue version embellished with feathers and paper fastener for eyes. I replicated this image on Procreate and love the effect of the different brushes used to create the feathers.
5. In line with the brief of identity, I explored the used of Venetian masks, which led to my studies of the plague doctor mask. This is an initial drawing of a carnival harlequin mask which derives from the Commedia dell’arte characters. The initial drawing is coloured using markers and liners. I cut out the eye space and inserted eyes cut out of a magazine. I preferred the transference of the ink and the cut out magazine on the back of the page. I liked the effect when enhancing them digitally on the Snapseed app.
Hyena skulls draw along online. Drawings of ravens in flight. Second pic from the top was an interesting bleed through from the previous page. I like see the formation of the wings. Could perhaps drawing into this to enhance the head and face. Bottom pic was on black paper with tippex pen and metallic pens to try and create the X-ray feel of the source drawing.
Developmental drawing and research
After reading about the First Nations transformation mask, I decided to revisit one of my drawings from class and draw over on procreate to enhance the quality. I wanted to enhance this drawing as i seen the resemblance to the Raven ceremonial masks. The masks usually have articulated jaws and also the disc in the beak represents the sun which can be moved up and along the beak as the Raven in First Nation folklore represents the dawning of a new day. It is also normal for the pupil of the eye of the Raven to the mirrored glass which reflects the light when worn by a ceremonial dancer around fire.
Raven Mask - Nuxalk Central Coast, British Columbia, ca. 1860–1880 - Northwest Coast Indian Art…
Development drawing. Masks. Researched the Native American ritual transformation masks. These mask were worn by dancers at ceremonies, where the outer mask is usually an animal or bird creature and when the string is pulled the mask opens are reveals another mask either of another animal or another human face. Some masks conveyed social status and can also portray a family’s ancestry as the mask can include family crests. Certain native tribes such as the Kwakwaka’walw are split into four ‘clans’ which where Killer Whale, Eagle, Raven and Wolf.
